Your sibling, after all, is the only other person in the world who understands how fucked up your parents made you.
Deb Caletti, The Nature of Jade
I never healed                            I just learnt to carry the burden
He hadnât felt FEAR like this in a long time. Heâd almost forgotten how hard his heart could beat against his chest. His eye movements were frantic as they bounced between each of the raiders devilish grins before falling to the ground counting five sets of boots. He was going to DIE, on his knees in the cold and completely helpless.
leah was terrified. it was five against two and the odds seemed impossible, but she had to help him. she was stuck, frozen behind the line of men in scuffed, but ultimately still nice black boots. raiders. made sense. she inhaled sharply before she ran full speed at the one in front of her --- the one that seemed like the leader of the pack of hyenas, and swung her machete over her head, allowing it to come down on the manâs shoulder. inches deep it went, her foot coming up to kick his stomach back for leverage to yank her weapon out of him. â GO ! â she yelled at the man on the floor. why would she yell that ? sheâd need help.

It happened in the blink of an eye, arms wrapping themselves around his body and the warmth of another canceling out a small portion of the cold. However, through the cracks, crevasses, and bareness, there was still winter air that PUSHED against his clothing, moving through swiftly. The hug was a shock, no doubt, but Benjamin still took comfort in it. While he was never one to hug people or even touch them in general, he knew that this was DIFFERENT. Although he didnât know how to feel about it or how to properly react, something within him told him to ignore every thought he had against hugging her back and JUST DO IT â if he didnât, she might let go and she might leave him again. A pair of arms gingerly wrapped themselves around the other, only his affection was much softer than hers, hardly there. It was light as a feather, something that he doubted she would notice, but it was there nonetheless. He put forth the effort, even though it was painful and uncomfortable for him to do. Youâre taller. The words were odd to hear given the fact that since his sister, no one was ever around long enough to notice how tall he had grown. He had forgotten that he was merely fourteen when they were separated ; he was small, smaller than her. And now? Now, his chin almost reached the top of her head and he could rest it comfortably on there. Now, his lanky figure practically towered over his sister. His hand instinctively began to rub the small of her back in comforting circles, an action that even surprised him. Comforting people had never been a strong point of his but seeing his sister just seemed to bring out a different side of him. âI MISSED YOU,â the words were soft-spoken, but just like his hug, they were there. Just loud enough for her to hear, not loud enough to strain his voice to the point of cracking ( which, he sensed would come accompanied with a steady flow of tearsâ something he wanted to avoid as much as possible ).
the soft way his arms wrapped around her was too wispy, but despite how she seemed incredibly unaware of the world around her, of her brotherâs silence and his unwillingness to breathe fresh air, these words were all caught in a filter called personality manipulation ( something she never did to him, if she could help it ), like a villainâs slithery power. leah was not a liar by nature, but she learned how to lie as a child. she learned to form herself to the room she was in so that if she stretched, she would cover each wall with a thinly spread portion of herself. sheâd pretend to like movies in exchange for someone to stick their tongue down her throat in the bathroom.
she sighed, a happy, contented sigh. he said he missed her. tears stained her pale and rosy cheeks. it was too cold for crying like this, too close to winter. no matter the season, no matter the temperature, her brother was here. her arms finally slid away from him and she look the step back to look at him. he looked so much older. he was so much taller than her now. she took a long, deep breath, her shaking chest shuddering her breath out. â i missed you, too, â she said with a smile and teary eyes, the green in her eyes prominent because of the red rings around them. she whispered, ;â i missed you. i canât believe youâre here. â a thousand questions were on the tip of her tongue, boiling up from her stomach and in her fingers, but she couldnât bare any of the answers right now, so she was quiet about them. later, after she got to spend time with him.
but she did have to apologize. she carried the guilt with her. â iâm sorry. i should have told you somewhere to meet me. i should have... looked more. â
leahâs feet shuffled like one of the dead. raiders were out to play and it shook the brunette girl to her core. the last encounter sheâd had with them nearly left her for dead, but she was the spiteful type, so every bruise and every drop of blood that hit the pavement like it was no longer hers, had been the pressure against the back of her skull and in between her fingers that made her grip her machete harder, made her turn her head at every noise. she would not be a victim this time; she would not lay down and yell, cry for anyone to stop. she was stronger now. she guarded the club from everyone and everything. but being strong took a lot of that blood that she seemed to have to scarcely now, quick taps on her veins at night to make sure she was still alive. she needed someone to check her pulse when she forgot; she wanted her best friend back. she rounded the corner to the suites to see shanti standing there. was she patrolling ? it didnât matter, however, as leah approached her, footsteps loud as a warning. she cleared her throat and put her hands on her hips. they hadnât spoken in weeks. â hey, â she said, trying to push her pride down with the grip on her own stomach.

RUN â the last word he heard from the only person left in the world that might possibly care for him. Her whereabouts: unknown ; her status: unknown. Everything was a mystery, just one GODDAMN enigma after the other. He moved from one problem to the next and he expected no less. After all, what was life without a plethora of problems that reached further than the horizons? When people told him to broaden his horizons, think bigger and better, all he could think about was how if he did that, his problems to solutions ratio would bounce way off track ( as if it already wasnât off to begin with ). As a defense mechanism to all of this, Benjamin made himself so small, so quiet, almost to the point of INVISIBILITY. If it werenât for the low whimpers and hushed crying at night, he would be sure that no one would ever notice him. Benjamin had little use, the only benefit of having him around being that his stealth and silence allowed him to reach his fullest potential with patrolling, and his willingness to lend a hand to others. If it werenât for those two key components contributing to the system that they had, the good people of the medical center wouldnât give two shits about him. However, it seemed as though the one skill he had wasnât at its peak potential that day, which is how he found himself TRIPPING over the body. The smell hit him as he lingered over it, looking at its face with a grimace. It was silent, up until he heard the voice of another. FAMILIAR & RECOGNIZABLE â his eyes widened at it as he stepped out from the corner slowly, hands held above his head in surrender. âNo gun,â He said quietly, eyes lingered over the figure of another in disbelief ( A GODDAMN LIEâ  the cool metal of the weapon pressing into his back ), though, he never allowed himself to look at her face.
â ben ? â she whimpered, the first thing coming out of her mouth when she saw the boy before her. it was him. this was her brother. she suddenly couldnât feel her fingers and toes, her feet moving on their own volition toward him to wrap him so completely in her arms that even if he didnât want to be hugged, heâd still embrace it. she wasnât someone who cried ---- ever, but this time, she sobbed. â oh, my god, are you real ? oh my god. oh, my god. ben. youâre taller ! â she refused to let go because despite that she pulled away from the hug to look at him, she embraced him again. god, he had gotten so tall. maybe it was only a few inches, but she missed it. she never thought sheâd miss seeing her brother grow. this was her only family left, her only brother. she whispered, a final time, â oh my god. â no matter how tightly to herself she held her little brother, he felt intangible, like he was going to slip out of her arms any second and disappear again like he were smoke and she would not be surprised if he had started up cigarettes. her machete lay on the ground a few feet away from her, a move sheâd advise to never allow happen, but the shock and immediate rush of emotion screaming at her brain translated into dropping everything, fingers unable to grasp anything but the back of his shirt where she held him. finally. finally.

TOUGH AND PERSISTENT â these were not the words used to describe Benjamin Campbell. Melancholy, unwanted, anthrophobic⊠those were better words. Those were the words that Benjamin was willing to tie himself down to, write them on a name tag and plaster across his face. It was within the tall, formidable walls of the V.A Medical Center that was supposed to be his new home. It was the place where he was supposed to lay down his defenses with the people that  he was supposed to trust. However, Benjamin wasnât ready to do that. He wasnât ready to allow himself the time and space to relax, to let his shoulders slump or his breath steady. He had a habit of leaving things unfinished, specifically situations where conditions were good or better. It always frightened him, knowing that maybe there was a happy ending out there ( he feared happiness just as much as he craved it ). No matter how hard he STRIVED for greatness in his past life and in the current one, Benjamin would forever be destined to stand in his own way of happiness. Benjamin thought about this, evaluated his decisions and choices. His nose was frozen numb and his body was shaking. He was used to this weather, but he wasnât used to having such thin layers of clothing ( only a long sleeve shirt and thin jacket ). As he neared the corner of the building, Benjamin looked around at his surroundings, vigilant eyes ( possibly from anxiety and paranoia ) watched carefully. However, as his eyes scanned the surroundings he forgot to mind where he was walking, and tripped over the body of a dead walker, the noise echoing through the air. FUCK, he thought to himself.Â
leah had never been particularly afraid of PEOPLE. before the apocalypse, people were predictable. she knew which streets to avoid and which ones to walk down; she knew how tweakers and junkies looked, but also knew how to tell which ones were the ones that were carrying ( though, she never did much harder drugs than coke ). here, however, and starting two years ago, people were more dangerous. maybe this was the mentality that sheâd not yet been bitten and had, in fact, been RAIDED and beaten by humans. she trusted no being, half of them unable to understand human emotion and the other half too selfish to. she looked out for herself and her brother and since he was gone, just herself. she swallowed thickly and chose the best of the options that were presented before her. if she turned the corner, she could be shot; if she ignored it, she could be raided again. there was NO WAY she would lose another kid to that. â show yourself ! â she yelled. â iâm not gonna hurt you if you show yourself and put any guns you have down. â
lanky figure occupies an empty seat while his legs rise to rest his feet on the chair nearby. he fanned out his newspaper, rays of sunshine singling out EVERY speck of dust that escaped from it â he coughed, god. how he hated this ROUTINE. â oh no, donât mind me. just reading this RIVETING article from when cheyenneâs little league took home first place in two-THOUSAND-fucking-four. â
â what, seriously ?! you found a paper from two-thousand-four ? holy shit. thatâs cool. thatâs, like, an artifact, man. i was NINE ----- go, little league. â

Ravi breathed heavily. âIâm fine,â he said, a little confused, glancing down at his arm. âI mean, I-Iâll need to get stitches when I get back to camp, and this bandage isnât my best workâŠoh.â She was asking if it was a bite. âNo.â He paused for a long moment, thinking about Amy. Sheâd been bitten on the arm too. By the time theyâd known it was too late to do anything. Not that anything could be done when it came to bites. He glanced at the knife in his hand, wonder if heâd have the courage to take himself out of the game, He slowly tucked the knife back into his holster. âItâs a cut. I just fell, thatâs all. No need toâŠâ He gestured towards her machete. ââŠuse that.â
she was definitely untrusting in her nature, considering she didnât automatically believe him. but even if he was just bitten, he was fine right now. she needed a second opinion: her own. she pulled her machete of its makeshift holster and left it on the ground, then took a step forward. â iâm weird and iâve always dreamed of the apocalypse for moments like these. â she was lying, but she was breaking the ice. â kidding. but my weapon is down and the best i can do is punch you. so can i see ? â could she really be blamed for wanting to check ? in this word ?

Everything happened way too fast, as she turned she saw that it hadnât been a person behind her but a zombie trying to grab a hold of her, and take a huge chunk of her neck. She didnât really know what to do, all she managed to do was lift her feet up and kick it back, barely distancing it from her, and it was then that the glass behind her broke, pieces of glass going everywhere, and all over her, cutting her up. It was then that she hear another girls voice yelling. She turned, and saw the browned haired girl, adrenaline rushing through her she wasnât too sure how she did it, but she did as told, and climbed through the broken glass and window out to where the girl was and away from the zombie.Â
when the glass flew everywhere, it only nicked leahâs arm once or twice. it felt like paper cuts ( which were admittedly awful, but over quickly, and call her a masochist, but the stinging was grounding ). the girl was safe and that was the biggest concern, despite that leah was no hero. however, despite her safety, the zombie wasnât giving up. he tried to mimic the blondeâs movements, but fell short and leah rolled her eyes. â this guy is tenacious, gotta give him that, â she said sarcastically, lazily motioning her weapon toward him. she climbed forward, however, and angled the machete properly, then hacked at its neck once to behead it. ( since sheâd gotten to cheyenne, two people had offered to sharpen it and she took every chance she could, because it used to take four tries. )

âIs what like a lesbian thing?â Nadja cocked a brow, sheâd never been one for labels ( though sheâs always thought people who said they âarenât into labelsâ are pretentious fucking shitheads, so sheâs made it a point to AVOID the topic completely unless itâs relevant ). âSaving your thirsty ass?â The thought is laughable to say the leastâa dead zombified cop on the ground while they make jokes about the other girlâs predicament. âReally more interested in smokes of booze if Iâm being fucking honest.â Nadja was never one for hookups beforeâa surprise to those who knew herâand certainly fucking not NOW. People got clingy and vulnerability was annoyingâit reminded her too much of her own.Â
wow. suddenly, leah was tense, and she hadnât wanted to be, but she didnât have a retort to the other shooting her down and even worse, she didnât have the preferred bargaining tools to get out. why did she think this would be a good â survival practice â ? she muttered, â well, someoneâs not sensitive with rejection, â then cleared her throat. â um, but yeah... i donât have either of those things. so... just be a pal ? â
she was describing zombies to someone. this really wasnât something that leah needed to do: everyone had seen one. but this kid, naive and probably also a pathological liar, said sheâd never seen one before. maybe her parents had shielded her or maybe she was lying, but leah was having fun, anyway. she was good with kids, even if she decided to be good with them a little too late for her own family. â yeah, theyâre real bite-y, â she described, a soft sardonic undertone. â they use these guys. â she gestured to each side of her top teeth. â canines. because weâre naturally carnivores. " the biology lesson was cut short, however, when she heard a noise around the other end of the building. she pushed the girl behind her, realizing that was probably how sheâd never seen one, and grabbed her machete, readying it so that she could stay pure.
( @benjamincampbell. )
how do you feel about dying alone..?
â i mean, iâm not happy about it, but i guess iâve kinda come to accept that thatâs how itâs gonna happen ? â
What's your biggest regret?
â not paying attention to how bad my family got. they needed me because i could have helped and i didnât. it still matters to me, even though theyâre all dead. â
