Behind the scenes at Harper’s Bazaar
I hope you don't mind That I put down in words How wonderful life is Now you're in the world...
It's a strange feeling, a strange notion, a strange situation.
In a sense she should already be used to it, to the feeling of a warm hand grabbing her finger, the soft heartbeat of a new life in her hands, and Rechelle knows, she shouldn't be crying like this.
She can't help it, she cried for days after Oz was born, she didn't know the reason, yet perhaps it was the overwhelming happiness of knowing she'd created something, something good. She'd always wanted to left something for the world to remember her by.
Big, glistening emerald orbs stare into her eyes, into her soul, and another tear slips down her cheeks, clumsy fingers holding the bundle close to her chest, as if she feared it would dissapear if she didn't cling to the baby with all her might.
Because right now, she feels her life is worth something, that she has created something that nobody can take away.
There is something about the way the baby stares at her that makes her laugh, in between choked sobs and the maids rush to her bedroom with clothes and towels to bathe the newborn, but Rechelle refuses to let her go just yet, not when she is just so tiny.
"She's beautiful" from the side of the bed, Oscar, carrying her beloved boy in his arms, watches the newborn with almost the same devotion he dedicates his wife, and she can't help but think how lucky her baby is, because she will be loved.
Love is something essential in her eyes.
Yet he isn't here, and somehow that hurts more than it should, because she understands he is constantly surrounded by responsabilities duties, yet she can't help but wonder if he considers them to be more important than his family.
Sometimes she is jealous of Sarah, of the love Oscar devotes to her, and she finds herself thinking 'what if...' But ugly thoughts like those can't taint the purity of her beloved child, and so she shakes them away and dedicates one of her radiant smiles at nothing, mind lost in between happiness and sadness.
"Have you thought of a name yet?" that is the question, and it wouldn't be Rechelle if she hadn't gotten overly excited about her pregnancy, if she hadn't planned everything from scratch. Hundreds of names and suggestions danced through her mind during those nine months, but only one stuck, one she remembered clearly from her adolescence "I recall a very quaint name, from one of my favourite books, the one that always stuck in my mind...mon dieu it is quite silly of me isn't it? To cling to those things" she laughs, and brings her lips to the newborn's forehead.
"Ada.."
