There was a long pause that followed the comment. Daisy tapped her fingers on her leg and looked at Olivia... still silent. "Well," she started, not selling any sort of confidence at all. "Do... do you want me to lie to you?" May would have had a plan. Coulson would have been talking through a really long and boring one - but Daisy's plan was always one thing. Run in and get in the action. She did her best 'planning' when she was in the middle of a problem, not on the outside looking. "Do you have a plan? We could do a plan - or we could just... you know... go in?"

“No, I’d prefer to know if we’re going in with a plan or not” Olivia was no stranger to not having a plan, choosing to improvise most of the time, but she at least wanted to know before running in. “I don’t have a plan, not much of a planner if I’m honest” at least not anymore. Her plans usually went to hell these days anyway so she usually improvised. It turned out okay 99% of the time. “I vote for just going in but if you want a plan we can do that.”

Natasha had a longstanding soft spot for younger heroes. Or aspiring heroes. (It was hard to tell where they stood — hard to tell what they considered themselves. Hero was a big word, created shadows bigger than most could imagine.) But Olivia was a funny one. Determined enough that Natasha could see her going far, and yet funny enough that Natasha wasn’t sure if she’d make it around the corner, let alone far enough into a fight to make a difference. That had been her issue with Scott Lang as well. He talked too much. Instead of shooting back another joke in Olivia’s direction, Natasha grabbed a length of rope and tossed it towards Olivia. “For your legs. You only need one leg, right? Let’s put it to the test.”

Olivia caught the rope Natasha tossed her, looking at it for a moment then up at Natasha. Could she fight with her legs tied? Possibly, definitely not as good as with her legs free though. “You... you do understand the concept of a joke right?” Because Olivia had only been joking, though now that it was practically a challenge from the older woman she couldn’t back down. Well she could but she was never one to do that, even the times she probably should.

All Jean ever wanted to do was help people. Even in her worst moments, she didn’t want other people to suffer for an instant, didn’t want them to ache so much as she wished they would simply disappear – and on the Raft, they had. She wished it into existence, and it happened, and she learned the detriment of vengeance. That was why she had tried to help Olivia, and looking at the girl now … well, she wondered if this was her attempt at an apology. “I think that’s another thing we have in common,” Jean offered, an olive branch of her own. “I wasn’t coming from a place where I was telling you what to do, Olivia. I genuinely want to help, if I can. I know what it’s like to lose everything, and grief … grief swallows you whole, sometimes, whether you let it or not. I just wanted to offer a hand up out of the hole, if I could.”

Olivia was angry, she was so angry all the time. The anger was always there even when she managed to keep it under wraps, to pretend it wasn’t there shew knew it was lingering just underneath the surface. “They say anger is the second stage of grief but for me... it’s the last” she had managed to accept that her friends, her family, everyone she cared about was gone, but she hadn’t managed to get over her anger of them being gone. She was angry they were gone, she was angry about why they were gone and she was also tried. She was tired of being the one who always survived while her friends and family died. “I’ve accepted that they’re gone, that there’s nothing I can do about it but...” she was still so angry.

Gabby had always been an early riser. Early bird gets the worm. Or early assassin gets the target. The sun was barely beginning to come through the window into their bedroom when Gabby woke and rolled over to see Olivia still asleep. Her girlfriend seemed so peaceful when she was asleep. Gabby leant down, pressing a light kiss to her forehead before trying her best to sneak out of bed without waking her.

Olivia was not a morning person, partly because she had barely gotten to bed before the sun rose and partly because she just hated mornings with a burning passion. She groaned tiredly as Gabby moved to get out of the bed. Turning towards her Olivia wrapped her arms around her girlfriend and moved them both so she was lying on top of Gabby. “Sleep” she muttered, burying her face in Gabby’s neck.

“You don’t know me very well,” Scott said with a wry smile, entirely too at ease for the situation. From the outside, it looked bad. Anti-mutant groups were really only anti-mutant in name — they rarely limited themselves to mutantkind alone. If he thought they would (and if he thought she’d listen), he would have sent Olivia on her way without concern. But… Men like this only ever wanted to wipe out anything different. Metahumans were included in that description.

They were outnumbered. Anyone else might have been concerned about that, but Scott? Scott had been a trained tactician since childhood, had faced odds far worse than this long before he was out of high school. To Scott, this was child’s play. “I always have a plan,” he assured Olivia with a nod. “Actually, I always have several. We’re going to flank them. You go right, use your ultrasonic vibration. I go left, use my concussive blast. We drive the ones who don’t lose consciousness immediately into a retreat.”

Depending on the day Olivia had a plan or she improvised every step of the way. The latter was more likely, especially after the Battle of the Gulag. It worked out for her most of the time. Maybe she was just bad at coming up with plans as the times she had plans went wrong more often than when she improvised. Before the Gulag battle she usually left the planning to Tim when she could. She had her moments when it came to coming up with plans but most of the time she was content to leave the planning to other people.

Olivia looked at Scott, frowning slightly as he explained his plan. It wasn’t a bad plan, actually it was a good plan except for one thing... “Uh, I can’t really control my sonic scream” she admitted sheepishly, maybe if she’d spent more time training she would be able to control it by now but she hadn’t. “I have a paralyzing whistle power too, though that would affect you too” at least she still had her bow and crossbow.

The lights were back on and Lorna was herself again and the city was no longer at its own throat with a thousand emotions at once. One might think that this made things easier, that it made things better, but Rictor’s life was shit whether the world got the memo to follow along or not. He was still angry, even without someone else to blame it on.

At least he wasn’t the only one.

He snorted when Olivia spoke, rolling his eyes and making no move to leave. “I’m never useful,” he pointed out, “and I never do what people tell me to do. So I guess we’re at an impasse here.” He walked passed her into the kitchen, yanked the fridge open and looked inside. The brand of beer he liked was on the bottom shelf, pack unopened. He wondered if that was supposed to make him feel as warm as it did. He pushed the feeling aside, opening the pack to grab a can. “Anyway, you can’t kick me out. This is my sister’s place, too. If she tells me to leave I’ll leave, but…” He opened the beer, taking a long swig and letting the sentence hang. “What’s got you pissy, anyway?”

Olivia’s cybernetic eye had stopped working, maybe that shouldn’t surprise her as it was starting to get old but it was still highly inconvenient. She was hoping it would be a simple fix, of course she had no such luck. From the looks of it she was going to have to replace it with a new one. Designing a new cybernetic eye is what she spent most of her free time on these days, which meant she didn’t get to spend as much time with her girlfriend as she wanted to but hopefully she could make it up to Gabby once this project was over. She still needed to talk to her not-dad about getting the resources to build the new model once everything else had been done.

Working on the new eye was exactly what she was doing when Ric decided now was a great time to stop by the apartment. Normally she wouldn’t let it bother her but she was trying to focus as to not make any mistakes. “When Gabby is here you’re welcome to hang around or when I’m not busy but seeing as Gabby isn’t here and I am very busy, so please leave” she told him. “I’m not- I’m working and you’re disturbing me” she said then turned her attention back to her computer.

          Tim startled a bit. It was… Rare, but the affirmation that his train of thought was valid, that he was right… The sting of the first year in his own cowl still rang as loud as the police sirens through the cold Gotham air: loud and continuous and almost too common that the pain and angst felt more numbing than anything. Just that hint of outer acknowledgement… It was almost a drug. He wasn’t sure if he wanted more or if he needed to stop while he was ahead. Maybe this new Queen wasn’t so bad after all…

          Tim looked over his shoulder, noting the slight glint of her eye, and doubly noted it wasn’t a trick of the foggy street lights. “… Nothing out of the ordinary on surface level. There aren’t any illegal trade routes that come through this area,” he thought out loud, turning his sights back onto their momentary target. “… Which… Might be why it’s so suspicious in the first place. It’s a cold zone in every hot trail we have traced out.” Some kind of No-Fire zone for the underground, perhaps. Maybe it was the hidden layer of some new rogue biding their time, or one of the old goons that Tim still had nightmares about… Well, when he had nightmares, let alone let himself dream.

Olivia was very particular when it came to who she teamed up, obviously there were her parents, but outside of that she didn’t do many team ups. She preferred to work on her own. Tim was one of the exceptions. Olivia actually liked working with Tim, him and Kara were the ones she usually teamed up with when she couldn’t get something done on her own. Tim was the one she had worked with the most though and his intuition had saved her life countless times. If this Tim was anything like the one she had known she wasn’t going to question him.

She nodded as he spoke, finishing her scan before she turned her attention fully back to Tim. “It’s unusually... for lack of a better word, clean for an alley” she couldn’t find anything on her scan so she had focused more on what was lacking. “It might be nothing but definitely worth checking out and keeping an eye on.”

She’d said as much, and even if she hadn’t, Jean felt it rolling off her shoulders. The only thing that made this place feel like home was Gabby, and that was something Jean could relate to. “Hey,” Jean said, stepping towards her. “I’m not afraid of you. If you want to let it out … you can. I can contain it. Be who you are, Olivia. Stop holding yourself back.”

“I don’t want or need anyone’s help” people who tried to help her had a habit of ending up dead and she was tired of it. She was tired of people dying, she was just tired in general. She hadn’t really slowed down since the Gulag Battle, if she wasn’t fighting criminals she was fighting to keep her anger in check. It had been easier since she met Gabby, but the anger was still there, lingering just under the surface, barely contained and ready to explode at any time. Olivia was trying to get her emotions under control again, to pull it all back and hide it behind the façade she’d carefully built up over the years. But Jean kept talking and Olivia was just so tired of keeping it all in, she screamed. She let out her canary cry at full strength, pouring all her anger and grief into it.
