“Okay, so picture this…” There was a white board. Where she’d found a white board was a matter of ultimate security, but she had found a while board. There was some order to what was scribbled all over it, numbers under countries and something about Cerebro and Jean and Charles and Missions. There weren’t any pictures, but that’s why Kitty was asking Gabby to picture it.
Kitty herself was pacing in front of the board, fingers passing uselessly through a dry erase marker that kept falling to the floor. She was restless, and she still didn’t think the sky looked quite right. “We get e-mails, from different parts of the world. There are a lot of filters in place, but we’re not closed off, there aren’t any gates, you know? So we get a lot of e-mails from people, both mutant and human, from all over the world who want to be here, and–”
Kitty paused. She’d cornered Gabby. She hadn’t even stopped to ask why Gabby was there she’d just started talking, “But not all of them can get here. So I’m thinking we should start an outreach program…”
Gabby wasn’t sure how this has happened. She had said hi to Kitty and somehow between then and now she had been roped into-- a lecture? No, a pitch? Yes, that felt more accurate--a pitch for Kitty’s plan. She was trying to figure out what the notes on the whiteboard meant exactly and also pay attention to Kitty’s idea. But when she realised what it was, she forgot the whiteboard, eyes widening and excitement growing.
“Yes! Yes, we should! And help them come here if they want to. But not everyone will want to so there needs to be things for them. Yes! So what do we do?”

“I didn’t cast a spell!” Zatanna said, almost too defensively. The idea of casting this kind of spell had lost its charm to her once the whole city was dealing with moving decoration and talking heads - and now this. (And Zatanna wanted to make sure, very firmly, that people knew it wasn’t her.) Zatanna took another look at the cat and then pinched her nose. He looked like the one that Tony had been telling her about. “Maybe he’s… a familiar that got misplaced?”

Gabby didn’t expect that response and spun to face Zatanna. “I didn’t think you did,” she assured her quickly. The thought hadn’t even really crossed her mind until Zee said it, but Zatanna said it wasn’t her so Gabby believed her. Magic would probably be something you’d know if you cast, she reasoned. She nodded. “Maybe that’s it! Are you a familiar?” she asked the cat. The cat meowed a loud no and then repeated its request for food. It seemed as confused as Gabby felt to be understood. “Weird.” She reached into her pocket, pulling out a small tin of cat food. “I was working w the shelter animals earlier, so I pocketed a couple tins to have on hand,” she explained to Zatanna as she opened it and set it down. “This is pretty cool though. Talking animals?” She looked at the cat. “You don’t know Alchemax Genetics, right?”

Kori wasn’t exactly sure what was happening. A dog had asked her if she knew her wallet was sticking halfway out of her purse. She would have been more alarmed at the time if she hadn’t known Gar from her time with her Titans family. It only occurred to her later that perhaps all dogs shouldn’t be talking. Especially to someone like her who didn’t understand animals like those with powers that gave them the ability to understand the thoughts of animals.
Now, she could hear someone yelling from the sky and asking for help. Kori immediately took to the sky, flying towards the woman and grabbing hold of the broom that was attempting to take off in her grasp, her hand going to the younger woman’s waist to steady her in case the broom decided to stop taking flight. “Are you alright? I can take you to the street or a nearby rooftop. Did you want me to bring your broom with us?” She inquired politely.
The broom flew. Like a real witch broomstick. Gabby couldn’t fly. So the choice seemed obvious. Flying broomstick. Anyone would’ve done the same, right? It seemed like a hell of a ride. Unfortunately, Gabby had no idea how to control this thing. She didn’t even know if it could be controlled. Jumping off was seeming more and more like a good option, but she couldn’t see if she was going to land on someone below. Maybe one of the X-Men or other mutants were around and could grab her instead.
So she yelled, hoping someone she knew would hear. Someone heard, but Gabby wasn’t expecting the gorgeous alien woman who grabbed a hold of the broom. Her eyes lit up. “Thanks so much!” She nodded eagerly. “I’m fine, promise! Either is good for me. Maybe the ground, actually. What borough are we over?” Gabby shrugged. “It’s not actually my broom, but it flew past me so I just jumped on.”

It really wasn’t a question Dick had considered, and he winced as she asked it. “I hope not,” he said, “because I think I had about three of them. I love candied apples. They’re like my kryptonite.” Candied apples, fried sweets, popcorn… it had a way of reminding Dick of home, of Haly’s. And right now, with his parents’ ghosts hanging round the city… Any extra taste of home was damn tempting.
Turning back towards her, he offered her a smile. “Hey, how are you holding up with all this? Backflipping your way over skeletons?”
Gabby grimaced and nodded. “Me too. But it’s okay, if they’re poison, it affects smaller people first, right? Like alcohol, kinda? So if I die randomly, you’ll know you should go get like an antidote or something.” She grinned. “In another life, I reckon I’d make a really good food taster. You know, like those ones that check for poison?” She paused. “Actually... Maybe not. It’d have to be pretty strong to actually kill me and I probably wouldn’t even feel sick. Laura would be better at it, because she’d probably feel it first.”
Her grin widened and she nodded. “You know it! What better time to practice, right?”

The rest of your problems didn’t vanish when the world went nuts. That was something Miguel had learned pretty early on, when there was Rapture dulling everything around him and Stone was still on his ass about the same deadlines he’d had the night before. The world was in a downward spiral, with broomsticks whizzing through the air and pumpkins holding people at gunpoint, but Miguel’s problems still existed.
He recognized her. There was a mask covering his face that he didn’t think he’d ever run into her with before, so it probably wasn’t a mutual kind of recognition, but he recognized her. She’d been in a cage nearly a year ago now, trigger scent soaking the walls in an attempt to make her go berserk. Someone told him they achieved it, in the end, but it clearly hadn’t lasted because she was standing outside an animal shelter now with her hands on her hips talking to a dog that seemed hesitant to come too close.
Slowly, Miguel approached. The dog stopped talking looked at him to tilt its head to the side. “Are you a human?” It asked, and Miguel snorted.
“Something like that,” he replied, because these days, he wasn’t really sure. “Is everything okay over here?” He looked to the young woman, the girl, because she couldn’t have been much more than a shocking teenager. “The, uh. The animals are talking. Because of whatever’s going on. But I guess you probably knew that.”
She shouldn’t recognise him. Realistically, most people wouldn’t, not with that mask on him. But Gabby’s nose was far more sensitive than others. Given the chance, she could recognise someone’s scent from an object they’d touched, like a scent hound. A mask didn’t stop her. She didn’t want to recognise him though. The masked man--Mike? Yeah, Mike--brought back more awful memories than she cared to admit. Ones she dealt with by not thinking about it.
So she didn’t think too hard, looking at him for a moment--trying not to glare considering her was being nice right now--and then back to the dog. Gabby’s concern was more about this stray, who seemed hungry and lost and yet didn’t want to trust her. “I know they’re talking. I’m trying to use that to my advantage right now. Come on, girl. We’ve got blankets and food and it’s a lot warmer.” She crouched down, holding her hand out. “I know it’s scary, but I don’t want to hurt you. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“Okay, so... You heard that too right? Because unless something has changed, I can’t actually talk to animals.” Gabby looked to Zatanna, eyes wide with barely contained excitement. She wanted so badly to believe this was all something good--even if her experiences with altered animals were so often nightmarish--and she wanted to hear it from someone else. “That cat definitely just told us he was hungry?”
