Francis Alÿs: Sometimes making something leads to nothing/Paradox of Praxis 1
Mexico City, Mexico, 1997
In "Paradox of the Praxis I (Sometimes Doing Something Leads to Nothing)', Belgian-born, Mexico-based artist Francis Alÿs pushes a large block of ice through the streets of Mexico City.
Over the course of nine hours, the ice block gradually melts, leaving behind only a puddle of water as evidence of the artist's effort.
While the performance, as the title suggests, literally "leads to nothing," it offers a reflection on progress, persistence, and human struggle and poetically emphasizes the absurdity of our relentless pursuit of change.
At its core, it serves as a representation of futility and an examination of labor that yields no tangible result.
