So...about Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3

I saw the trailer, and I got hyped.

Then I saw the season three reviews and recaps, shook my head, and pulled my expectations way back down.

Then I skim-watched the episodes. 

And after all that, I’ll say: Season three was just fine.

To be clear: It’s not good. It’s not what I’d hoped this TV series would be, based on Season 1 and parts of Season 2. 

But it’s become clear to me that this series has become what it was always likely to be: the obvious product of the show runner who made Riverdale.

Even be entertained by it.

That said, here’s a litany of the things I wish were different.

1. I wish the show runners would stop with the musical crap. 

It’s always cringe-making, and never, ever works for me.  

2. I wish they had done a better job of using this show’s amazing characters. 

Zelda and Hilda Spellman. Prudence. Madam Satan. There are truly awesome characters/actors in this show, and all of them have been given disappointing plot lines.

3. I wish I liked Sabrina more.

I want to root for her, but she’s incompetent. If she were exactly the same personality-wise, but didn’t whine about her boyfriends and didn’t need to be rescued every five minutes, she’d be far more fun to watch. 

4. I wish they had done a better job with other key characters.

Lucifer, in particular, is a disappointment. He could be so interesting and complex, and instead he’s a vain bully in a leisure suit. And don’t get me started on Nick.

5. I wish the series spent little to no time in the human world.

I don’t care much about Roz, Harvey, or Theo, and it feels like they belong in a different show.

5. I wish the show runners dove deep into the mysteries presented in the show, instead of jumping from superficial plot point to plot point.

So many things are mentioned, or hinted at, and then dropped in favor something new and shiny. What about Edward and Diana’s true relationship? Who were Ambrose’s accomplices behind the attack leading to his house arrest? Why was so much effort expended to get Sabrina to sign the Book of the Beast? What about Salem? Etc., etc. 

Anyway.

CAOS has still been an entertaining ride, and I’ll still pop in for new seasons. But this season made me realize it won’t be the series I’d hoped for.

CAOS Season 3 Speculation and Spoilers

Over the next few days, I’ll update this post with key theories, stills, and spoilers for Chiling Adventures of Sabrina Season 3.

Plot points we know:

Madam Satan gets dethroned.

Sabrina got her Herald of Hell powers back.

A carnival with Puck/Robin rolls into town, and tries to resurrect an ancient evil. Puck dates Theo. The carnival is run by the god Pan. 

A banshee appears to the Spellman family.

Prudence and Ambrose hunt Father Blackwood with the help of a voodoo priestess.

Sabrina fights Prince Caliban for control of the throne of hell.

Mambo Marie and Zelda become a couple.

SPIDERS.

Plot points that seem likely:

Nick returns from hell with Satan secretly in control of his body.

Sabrina’s going Heaven in season 4. (?)

CalibanxSabrina are going to be positioned as a new favorite ship.

Nick and Sabrina break up.

Green Man is the ancient evil the pagans want to resurrect.

Virginities are lost.

New CAOS Trailer, New Theories, Part II (Episodes 15-20)

We’re less than two weeks out from the next 9 episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Over the next week, assuming there’s time, I’ll be collecting theories, stills, and spoilers in this post, and in Part I.

But first, for those who are trying to remain pure:

Unlike in Part I, the following spoilers and theories are not separated by episode, as the timeline gets less and less clear the further you go into Season 2.

Spoilers (have been confirmed elsewhere):

Confirmed holidays covered in episodes are Epiphany, Valentine’s Day/Lupercalia, St. Patrick’s Day, and May Day/Pentecost (above). Probably Easter will be as well.

Hilda’s romance with Dr. Cerberus goes badly, due to his secret nature (top guesses are werewolf or vampire). 

Neglected by the Dark Lord, Madam Satan starts to fall for Adam, Miss Wardwell’s boyfriend (hat tip). (Note the romantic roses and candles, as well as the creepy figurine he’s gifted her.) I wonder if this Adam is really who he says he is, given that Lilith was originally the wife of the biblical Adam.

Father Blackwood and Zelda Spellman prepare for their nuptials in episode 5.  

Sabrina resurrects Ambrose.

A fortune-teller comes into town in episode 4, and shows everyone the dark consequences of their desires.

Someone crosses Zelda, and Hilda gets revenge.

We meet Nick’s familiar, an obsessive werewolf named Amalia, and he’s forced to choose between her and Sabrina.

We get a visit from the Anti-Pope (played by Ray Wise).

Finally, the Dark Lord is all up in Sabrina’s business this season:

Hey boo baby girl.

By the end, he apparently manifests before Sabrina in human form (and I’m like, why didn’t you approach Sabrina this way in episode 2, instead of making Principal Hawthorne bleed from his eyeballs?):

The Dark Lord wears a lot of satin, and demands Sabrina performs increasingly evil acts to prove her loyalty:

...including setting fire to Baxter High. That’s one way to win over a lady, I guess.

Conjecture (my guesses):

Luke dies and Ambrose takes up with Dorian Gray.

Sabrina learns how to fly (thought this gives me Icarus vibes):

Update: This looks like a prophecy, aka not real. From Consequence of Sound’s review: “Episode four is split into several vignettes depicting the grisly, ironic fates set to befall its characters: Sabrina’s trust in new beau Scratch gets her shot up into space to freeze to death...”

Finally: I am probably wrong (Update: was totally wrong), but I still think Nick Scratch is Satan. Maybe the son of Satan.

He only wears black, which is such a stark deliberate choice. He clearly has a secret identity. And I don’t want him to be Edward Spellman, given that they’re going for Nickbrina sexytimes. 

Then there’s the fact that the apparent Dark Lord has been so bad at manipulating Sabrina. The Devil is supposed to be the father of lies, the master deceiver, who seduces rather than forces people to sin. Yet the CAOS Dark Lord hasn’t shown any gift for seduction or manipulation.

But what if the Dark Lord is not the Dark Lord?  

Update: So there’s an article saying that The Dark Lord is the Dark Lord, he is Sabrina’s actual father, and that Madam Satan and others trap him in Nick’s body at the end of the season. Okay then!

New CAOS Trailer, New Theories, Part I (Episodes 12-14)

We’re less than two weeks out from the next 9 episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. A new trailer has dropped, and stills and speculation are trickling out slowly (very slowly).  Over the next few weeks, assuming there’s time, I’ll be collecting theories, stills, and spoilers here and in Part II.

But first, for those who are trying to remain pure:

Chapter 12 (S2/Ep1): The Epiphany

We ended CAOS Chapter 11 with Three Demon Kings coming out of the Greendale mines bearing gifts. My personal theory is that they are coming to Sabrina, to “celebrate” her dark baptism. 

Update: CBR’s review calls them “rebellious Kings of Hell” and “angry, entitled Plague Kings.”

I don’t think these demons will come to adore her, but will instead act as antagonists. In another Netflix preview video, Sabrina is shown fighting one of the Demon Kings with a spell:

So my theory is that the gifts they bring will be more like curses.

Based on IMDB, one of the Demon Kings will be Asmodeus, who is associated with lust.

Another will be Purson, who knows hidden things, and has the ability to see the past, present, and future. My theory is that he will show Sabrina the moment when her father gave her as a baby to the Dark Lord.

Part of me wonders if Sabrina is really a Spellman, or if she is the daughter of the Dark Lord (with Edward Spellman playing the Joseph role). If she is not a true Spellman, this could be the loophole by which she escapes her contract with the Devil.

Other episode 1 spoilers: 

Madam Satan becomes the new principal of Baxter High.

Susie Putnam is now Theo.

Sabrina competes with Nick to be the academy’s “Top Boy.”

Chapter 13 (S2/Ep2): The Passion Of Sabrina Spellman

In this episode, I think we’ll see a play:

The Passion of Lucifer Morningstar, by Father Faustus Blackwood.

Starring Nick as Lucifer...

...and Sabrina with brown hair... 

...with an unhappy Madam Satan looking on.

What Does The Creepy "Sabrina" Holiday Special Ending Mean For Part 2?

If you ended the "Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina" holiday special, "A Midwinters Tale" wondering who those three demons were, this is for you.

From the article:

While we can’t know what the demons will do once they reach Judas — or if they’re somehow coming to support sweet Leticia, curveball — we do at least know two of their three names. If you look closely at the credits, two unheard of characters are listed as guests stars: Asmodeus (John Murphy) and Purson (Donald Seales).

Both Asmodeus and Purson are kings of hell, and Purson could see the past, present, and future.

10 Things We Learned Visiting the Set of Netflix's 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'

Minor spoilers for mortals ahead.

Old article quote that contradicts the Nick-is-Edward-Spellman theory, though it could be a misdirect:

Sabrina's father, Edward, plays a big role off the screen.

Throughout the series, Sabrina hears from various people about the exploits of her father Edward Spellman, the former High Priest of the Church of Night. Some of these stories will come from a fellow student, Nicholas Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood), who has a particular interest in Edward Spellman studies. "We all have idols; we all revere certain people," Leatherwood says. "For me, I'm an Alan Watts fan. He’s a British philosopher, and he recorded a lot of great lectures over the years. I'm obsessed with Alan Watts in the way Nicholas is obsessed with her father. Both men are sort of legendary. They made a strong impact on their communities." Exactly what Edward Spellman's impact was -- and why his successor, Father Blackwood, is not a fan -- remains a mystery for viewers to discover on their own.

A very spooky winter solstice!

Yet another interview with CAOS showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa! 

What about Aunt Zelda, who's not falling in line behind Father Blackwood as much as she used to? Aguirre-Sacasa: Yeah, we'll definitely see a lot of that. There are big, big, big story pieces for Zelda and Blackwood, that's for sure.

Nick Scratch is presenting himself as a viable suitor to Sabrina. Is he a good choice? I worry, given that both of his names are epithets for the Devil. Aguirre-Sacasa: Usually on these kinds of shows, there's the good boy next door, and then there's the bad boy. Harvey is obviously the good boy and Nick is the bad boy. And both Nick and Scratch are nicknames for the devil -- Old Scratch, Old Nick -- so I thought it would be fun to name someone Nicholas Scratch. But whatever implications that might have about his identity, I cannot speak to right now! [Laughs] I do think they have a lot in common. They both have a relationship with Edward Spellman, and Sabrina obviously has a lot of questions about her father. Nick says he's a big acolyte of Edward Spellman. She's pretty powerful, and I think he's turned on by power. There are some definite similarities, for sure.

Praise Satan, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Has Been Renewed for Seasons 3 and 4

Just in time for Satan’s Solstice, Netflix has gifted Sabrina Spellman fans with two additional seasons of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

I think it’s the lead-in to next season’s episode 1, which will cover Witch Epiphany/Three Kings Day, and include this bizarro nativity/dark baptism scene (shown in the A Midwinter’s Tale trailer but not the ep.):

If the three kings visit Sabrina and bring her gifts, then maybe the Dark Lord sees Sabrina as a dark version of Jesus, or the second Eve.
