Listen, I’ve seen it been said a few times on twitter that Wei Wuxian views kindness as something that is conditional and in turn, is something that needs to be repaid. This view also extends to his view on love. By love, I’m talking specifically about people and how they love him.
Look, I headcanon that Wei Wuxian’s love for Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng is different from the way they love him, why?? Because he was raised to love them in order to protect them whereas they grew to love him on their own. Jiang Fengmian found Wei Wuxian and brought him to Lotus Pier, introduces him to his kids and just provides him with the necessities, but Madam Yu resents Wei Wuxian for what he represents. He is proof, at least in her mind, that her husband is never truly hers. She is not kind to him. She does not treat him like the others. She is quick to remind him of his place and remind the other members of the family of it as well. He is there to serve them in whatever role is expected of him. He knows his role and how he fits or doesn’t within their family. He knows that he is given the things he has because he is useful to them. He may be the first disciple, but he is still the son of a servant. This also is the reason he is so willing to sacrifice himself, but that is for another time.
This is especially shown when the lives of Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng are thrust into Wei Wuxian’s hands. Despite the fact that he was whipped, without a sword, and also losing his home, he was expected to put their lives above his own in order to keep them safe. Although some would be at a loss with this sudden responsibility, he only allows himself to grieve for a small while before he throws himself into the position. This makes you wonder just how many times before he had been expected to put their lives above his own. How many times has this boy been told, has been shown, that his life is worth less than theirs??
This all ties into Wei Wuxian’s denseness when it comes to Lan Wangji and his feelings. Yes, Lan Wangji is a man of few words and his facial expressions are hard to decipher for others, but also Wei Wuxian didn’t realize that he could actually like him because that thought never crossed his mind. How could anyone like him when, in his eyes, he hadn’t done anything to be deserving of it?
Love and kindness is always attached to something for him. It is something you receive when you do something for others. It’s a reward for being good and useful to those around him (see: how the cultivation world, despite fearing him during the sunshot campaign, did not turn on him until he was not in use and would not allow himself to be used by other sects). With Lan Wangji, all he ever did was annoy him and then later on fought with him. Sure they had their nice moments, but did it really outweigh all the bad?? Probably not. So how could this boy, who had this lesson that love is something that is not freely given but is something that is conditional, ever think that Lan Wangji could feel this way about him??
It would be interesting to read fic about Wei Wuxian learning that love doesn’t need to have any strings attached. It’s not easy to unlearn something that has been such a key element to your belief system, but I think with Lan Wangji and the juniors Wei Wuxian can learn that he deserves to love and be loved in return.

#1: wwx dies at the start
The soldiers stare at him with pity in their eyes. Lan Yuning’s voice is gentle by his ear. Lan Wangji thinks he should feel upset, but all Lan Wangji feels is...numbness.
Some guilt wells up, instinctively, because it is Wei Wuxian after all.
Wei Wuxian has been Lan Wangji’s betrothed for half his life, has loved Lan Wangji for perhaps more. Wei Wuxian has no real reason to be here, except, of course, that his presence crucially saved Lan Wangji’s life. He thinks Wei Wuxian must’ve follow him here, must’ve protected him from the sidelines - it’s consistent with Wei Wuxian’s character, and with the depth of his feelings for Lan Wangji.
He must’ve loved Lan Wangji so much, to be able to jump in front of Lan Wangji to shield him from the attacks. He died taking thirteen arrows for Lan Wangji; he clearly loved Lan Wangji more than life itself.
Reality slowly sets in. Lan Wangji’s chest constricts painfully. He stares down at Wei Wuxian’s lifeless body, and thinks -
I was never even nice to him.
But Wei Wuxian had not minded. He came here for Lan Wangji, knowing Lan Wangji did not love him. He fought a battle he did not have to endure in secret, knowing Lan Wangji did not love him. He died, knowing Lan Wangji did not love him.
And now that Wei Wuxian is gone, Lan Wangji is terrified to explore the possibility that Wei Wuxian was wrong. That they both were.
His fingers tremble when he reaches out to touch Wei Wuxian’s cheek. “Wei Ying,” he whispers.
He wears Wei Wuxian’s ribbon in his hair through the war. It is inconsistent with the customs to wear red while he is mourning, but Lan Wangji thinks Wei Wuxian would like it; he’d always wanted Lan Wangji to wear more colours, after all.
#2 - wwx dies towards the middle, before lwj falls in love
“I would honour him as my husband,” Lan Wangji says, quiet but firm. “The funeral procession sought is necessary.”
“The Jiang family will hold their own funeral for Wei Wuxian,” Lan Qiren says. “There is no reason why we should be involved.”
Several of the elders nod in assent.
“He has not married into the royal family,” Elder Lan Yishan protests. “There are no precedents to allow a commoner to enjoy such privileges.”
Beside Lan Wangji, Lan Yuning bristles. “Enjoy-”
“He was my husband,” Lan Wangji says loudly, clearly. “Wei Wuxian and I took our bows when we were at the Burial Mounds, thinking we might not make it back to do so. Our union was witnessed by Moling-junwang, and several trusted soldiers. Most have not returned, but Moling-junwang is here.”
“They were married,” Lan Yuning declares. “Er-dianxia admits the union, and will observe the three year mourning period to mark the passing of his consort. The Jiang family have been made aware of the same just earlier today. They concede to er-dianxia’s right to organise Wei Wuxian’s funeral.”
The Jiangs had not budged until Lan Wangji spoke to them about Wei Wuxian’s dying wishes.
Lan Wangji thinks back to the moment where Wei Wuxian was bleeding out, and gasping for breath in his arms. Of the way Wei Wuxian’s tears had spilled out when he admitted to Lan Wangji that he was scared. Of the way Wei Wuxian had smiled when Lan Wangji promised to stay with him.
“You would’ve married me, wouldn’t you, er-gege? If the war hadn’t happened? You would have, right?”
Lan Wangji dreams about Wei Wuxian’s last words more than he wishes to admit.
“I will not accept anything less than a funeral befitting of a wangfei for Wei Wuxian,” Lan Wangji tells the elders. He squares his jaw, and looks his uncle in the eye. “Anything less would be an insult to my lineage.”
The elders concede, as Lan Wangji expected them to.
He may not have loved Wei Wuxian, but this, at least, he can do for him. He can make sure history will remember Wei Wuxian as Hanguang-wangfei, as Lan Wangji’s consort.
#3 - wwx dies towards the end, after lwj falls in love
“No,” Lan Wangji cries, when he feels Wei Wuxian’s body slacken in his arms. He tightens his hold on Wei Wuxian. If he keeps holding onto Wei Wuxian, Wei Wuxian won’t be able to leave him. “No, Wei Ying, no, please.”
Wei Wuxian doesn’t reply.
“Please, Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji whispers. “Please, we have to go home together. We have to get married. Wei Ying, you can’t leave me here alone, I-”
He never even told Wei Wuxian. He’d held onto that foolish notion that Wei Wuxian would want to hear it in better circumstances. That the battlefield was no place to tell Wei Wuxian of his feelings.
Wei Wuxian still doesn’t know, because Lan Wangji hasn’t said it to him yet.
“I love you,” Lan Wangji says in a rush. “Wei Ying, I love you.”
He is distantly aware that he cannot feel Wei Wuxian struggling to suck in air anymore. He tries not to think about how he cannot feel the strong beat of Wei Wuxian’s heart. His own robes are soaked through his armour - blood, he thinks, none of them his.
“We have to go home,” Lan Wangji tells him. “I said I would bring you home safely. I have to bring you home, Wei Ying.”
They are so close. Gusu is about five li away. They are less than half a shichen away from home.
Lan Wangji cannot lose him now.
Someone strikes at him. Lan Wangji takes the blow to his shoulder, and doesn’t move from where he is holding Wei Wuxian in his arms.
“Er-dianxia!” someone yells. “Please, er-dianxia, we have to go before more men come!”
“Wake up, Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji whispers. “Wei Ying, we have to go. We have to go home now.”
“Wangji, please.” That’s Lan Yuning’s voice. “We have to go, hmm? Let me help you carry Wei Wuxian. We’ll take him home, okay?”
He doesn’t remember the trip back into Gusu.
He spends it fervently clutching Wei Wuxian’s hand. Wei Wuxian’s hand is so cold, so Lan Wangji brings Wei Wuxian closer to himself, holds Wei Wuxian so he wouldn’t be cold.
Wei Wuxian doesn’t like the cold. He’s told Lan Wangji that before, and Lan Wangji had imagined shifting his chambers into a sunnier room in Hanguang-fu so that Wei Wuxian could sit in the sun in the comfort of their rooms when he moves in after their wedding.
He was going to commission Wei Wuxian a lotus pond. He was going to show Wei Wuxian the painting he made for Wei Wuxian.
They were going to marry and be happy and in love and together for a lifetime, but now-
Now Wei Wuxian’s hand is so cold, and Lan Wangji cannot seem to rub warmth into him no matter how he tries.
