MESSAGING
This article provides facts that for-profit school’s are losing enrollment: University of Phoenix has suffered a 70% drop in enrollment since 2010 and DeVry had a 23% drop this year alone. Community Colleges, however, are winning because of this. The article notes perceived deception from for-profit schools and fear of closure or loss of accreditation are just some of the main reasons why enrollment is slipping, including new student enrollment (new students at the University of Phoenix dropped 38% this year).
IMPLICATIONS
Students seem to fear attending a school that is being talked about in the same breadth as ITT. However, some schools are responding positively by offering more scholarship money and focusing on graduation rates, showcasing more of an interest in the student rather than the profit.

Walden University was ranked 19th on a list of 100 schools for “Best Colleges for Adult Learners — 4 Year Colleges,” from the Washington Monthly 2016 College Rankings. The list reviewed 571 public and private institutions and based the criteria on adult student media earnings, services for adult learners, ease of transfer, flexibility programs, tuition and fees, number of adult students, and loan repayment rank. The rankings were compiled utilizing data from U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) survey, the Department’s College Scorecard data base, and the College Board’s Annual Survey of Colleges—the data was compiled in collaboration with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL).
IMPLICATIONS
A number of these online institutions are garnering significant notoriety by getting on these lists with other prestigious schools (i.e. Jack Welch Management Institute). These are positive developments for for-profit institutions amid the government crackdown.

Daniel Webster College, located in New Hampshire, was owned by ITT Tech and left students and teachers at a loss with the closing of its doors. SNHU negotiated a teach-out with the parent company. They will be taking on the 740 students that were enrolled as well as the faculty and staff so they can continue their programs over the next year. SNHU is honoring the current tuition of the students and will look to accept any of these students for the following academic year if they want to continue their coursework. SNHU is also planning on keeping the faculty members.
IMPLICATIONS
This is another example of an online school using the closing of ITT to its advantage, while doing a good deed for those put out by the closing of ITT. It is an opportunity to gain students and qualified faculty while turning a negative into a positive.
