Rundown apartments reborn as food-forest coliving Agritopia
In 2007, Ole and Maitri Ersson bought the rundown Cabana apartment complex in the city and immediately began to de-pave parking spaces to make space for what today is a huge permaculture coliving space and urban food forest. Today, the Kailash Ecovillage has 55 residents who all help farm where there was once pavement, grass, a swimming pool, and an overgrown weed patch.

The Permaculture Spiral Garden - A Great Starting Point
There is probably no other structure as popular for illustrating Permaculture in practice as the Herb Spiral. Okay, I guess I could mention the lasagna sheetmulching method or also the cob oven that tends to be the first hands-on project at a typical Permie intro session. But when it comes to showing how landscape design, zones and sectors, stacking functions, and efficient use of space and water come together in one unique structure, the Spiral Garden is unbeatable.
Turning Theory into Practice
In typical Permaculture Designer Certificate courses, but even in brief intro weekends to Permaculture, there tends to be a lot of theoretical discussions. Since the numerous design principles can be applied to any climatic region, from the tropical to the subarctic, and on any scale from the humongous to the tiny, the practical aspects of the ideas can easily get lost. That's where a good hands-on application comes, where the participants get to move around rocks and dirt, while realizing how much it ties in to the concepts they've just discussed. This way the apparent "main purpose" of "building something to grow all your kitchen herbs on", becomes a neat side feature.
Adjust Your Landscape!
The first thing to realize that landscape is welcome to be modified and adjusted to bring out the best in it. Clearly, while it is important to work with what's there already, it doesn't hurt think about mounds and valleys. And before you bring out the excavators for your large-scale farm, it makes sense to start small… say on a circle of 2-5 meters (6-16 feet) diameter. In other words, the Spiral Garden is a hill with a spiral shaped surface, leading down to ground level, or further down into a water hole. It can be made out of rocks, bricks, concrete debris, or anything else you have lying around that can hold your soil.
Design According to Your Scale
Looking around for existing Herb Spirals it's easy to get confused. Some are so big you can actually climb on them (that is, you have to in order to reach what's growing on top). Others are so tiny that you may not even want to step on them. The question is: which size is the right one for you? Since this is something you will have to decide almost daily in Permaculture, it doesn't hurt starting out with this important question.
Organizing Your Spiral Garden
While there are seemingly endless types of Spiral Gardens, there are a few things they all have in common: They all start out with a region on the top, where water is bound to run off right away, leaving the soil relatively dry. This area is also the most exposed to the wind. Keep this in mind when choosing the plants that are going to live here. Ideally, the spiral should start sloping toward the East from here. Delicate plants that benefit greatly from the morning sun will appreciate this region. As the slope continues toward the South and West, it becomes more suitable for sun loving species. Finally, as the spiral reaches the ground level in the shady Northern part, it will be perfect for herbs that prefer less sun, more shade and more water, since the soil tends to be wetter here. (Note: This is for the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere North and South are reversed.) To make full use of the runoff water, many people add a small pond at the base of the spiral, where additional aquatic plants, such as watercress, can be grown.
The given illustration offers a good number of herbs for a nicely diverse kitchen. Depending on what else you want in your Herb Spiral, you can add it in the most suitable region. Mint and lemon balm love the cooler, shady part with more water. Lemongrass is great in the sunny area, and tarragon and estragon prefer the dry top of the spiral. Of course, the idea is not limited to kitchen herbs. For maximalists, the same theory can work with a mountain you might want to terraform into a spiral farm. But right now I'd prefer to stay small scale.
Plenty of Benefits (That's Why It's Permaculture)
As explained above, the main purpose of the Spiral Garden is not only to increase your gardening area by making use of the vertical, but also to create diverse climatic conditions, which do make a difference on the smallest scale. But as Permaculture tends to be, there are many other benefits to it. The structure itself offers great habitat for numerous animals, such as frogs, salamanders, lizards, but also pollinating insects, and of course others that may not directly benefit us, but by feeding on others they all add to the stability of our ecosystem. The structure itself will suppress weeds and make use of material that you're not likely to use elsewhere. Finally, depending on the size and location, it will be an ideal place to grow all your kitchen herbs right where you can access them most easily.
Some Things to Keep in Mind
When building the structure, make sure it will contain the soil in a nice trough, slanting slightly inward. That way bits and pieces that fall off will roll towards the center, until contained by the main mound.
Make sure the slope is always nice and gradual, avoiding sudden drops where the water can rush down quickly, eroding the soil.
If you're going to walk on your spiral, include a separate walkway that won't compress good soil. Most importantly, it should be sturdy enough to provide stability and make access safe.
Don't forget that while the structure is important to keep the soil in place, it is the soil that you'll be growing plants in. So it should have a good depth of 20-50 cm (8-20 inches) throughout the entire spiral. This can be the trickiest part!
Apply your own observation to which plants do better in which parts of the spiral. Also, with time you will find many other plants growing in it that you didn't plant. Before removing them, consider how much they actually bother your herbs, and whether their benefits may not outweigh their drawbacks.
Go Out and Build Your Own!
I hope this brief overview got you inspired to go out and try building an Herb Spiral yourself! I would love to hear your experiences with it!

How would one increase their psychic/spiritual strength?
There are many ways that you can go about increasing your psychic and spiritual strength:
You can go through the process of meditating, or practicing some form of spiritual practice.
You can use specific crystals that are connected to psychic and spiritual strength such as amethyst, selenite, celestite, and lapis lazuli.
You can use specific herbs for the same sort of spiritual and psychic improvements such as bay leaf, frankincense, myrrh, and sage.
You can connect yourself to Divinity or a deity in order to gain psychic and spiritual strength.
You can randomly awaken to your spiritual potential through a traumatic event, or through the process of awakening, initiation, or enlightenment.
These are all the ones that have come to my head immediately but there are many more. Thank you for the question, I appreciate it.

Looking To Join Your Local Antifa?
Over the last 24 hours, we’ve received no fewer than a dozen requests for contact information for local antifa groups all over Europe and the U.S. THIS IS FANTASTIC! If you’re one of the people who wants to hook up with your local antifa, here are some things to know: 1) We aren’t in contact with every antifa crew in the world (yet!). In a lot of ways, antifa are more organized than ever before and we’re seeing cross-border collaboration with projects like this tumblr, The International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund, the International Day of Solidarity with Anti-Fascist Prisoners, etc. So while we are building towards the day when we’ll know every antifa crew everywhere, we might not know of an active one in your area. 2) Referring you to a local antifa crew does not = endorsing or vouching for that crew. Due to things like linguistic barriers, geographic distance, etc. we might have heard of an antifa crew near you that we can put you in touch with, but that doesn’t mean we necessarily know much more about them beyond some contact info. So if we pass on a contact point for an antifa crew, please understand we aren’t endorsing them per se. You should approach contact with any antifa or political group you don’t know personally with some common-sense security precautions, just in case. Common-sense security precautions like these ones. 3) There might be active antifa networks where you are right now. If you’re in the U.S. you should check with The Torch Antifa Network; If you’re in the UK you should check with The Antifascist Network; If you’re in France you should check with La Horde; If you’re in Sweden you should check with Antifascistisk Aktion Sweden; If you’re in The Netherlands you should check with Anti-Fascistische Actie You could also check out other networks that aren’t solely antifa but who do antifa stuff, like the IWW. 4) You can probably find the nearest antifa crew yourself w/ some creative & skillful Googling. Have you typed in the name of your town/area/region + terms like “antifa,” “antifascist,” or “antiracist?” You might be pleasantly surprised by what comes up! 5) If you’ve done all that and can’t find a local antifa crew to connect with, it might be time to start your own. We’ve written some tips about starting an antifa crew + some thoughts on what kind of things your new crew could be doing. The Anti-Fascist Network has also published a guide to setting up an antifa group as well as a list of useful resources for antifa. Also, here’s our list of 30 antifa actions that pretty much anyone could pull off with the help of a few friends + Pop Mob’s/Spencer Sunshine’s list of 40 4ays to Fight Fascists. Finally, the It Did Happen Here podcast is a lesson-packed look back at how people in Portland came together in the late 80s to run a violent gang of white supremacists out of town. If you’re seeking out like-minded antifa near you, we hope this proves a useful resource. We can’t wait to hear what you get up to in your part of the world!
not really like. a super important thing i guess, but in my town theres been propaganda from a covid truther group called the white rose, i’ve torn down all of their stickers and shit, but it’s really frustrating not being able to find where they’re coming from. i’m gonna try and combat their stickers with antifa ones, in addition to the activism i already participate in (as safely as possible given my blackness and how trigger happy cops are here). just such a headache…
If you're not infuriated enough already, know that these COVID ignoramuses took their group's name from teenaged anti-fascists executed by the nazis in Germany in the 1940s. It's been super-disturbing to see not just the growth of a movement of people that refuse to take minimum precautions to protect themselves & others in their community from a lethal virus, but also to see fascists & the far-right rapidly infiltrate that movement.
Bright side: know also that antifascists all over the world are doing the same thing you're doing - going over their bullshit with actual antifa stickers. In fact, here's a message we got last week from one in Toronto, Canada:
"Your stickers are so much better quality than the racist bullshit I cover them up with! That faded white paper was once an anti COVID screed but the weather has destroyed it. Meanwhile, refugees are still welcome!"
Our best advice for your sticker mission: take a buddy to act as a lookout and change up the days/times you go out on sticker runs so as not to provide our enemies with a pattern of behaviour to entrap you. Hey, do you need antifascist stickers? We sell these two different sets of 30 & donate all the proceeds to The International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund. Here's what we gots:
This set above, which you can pick up here.
And also this set below, which you can pick up here: https://fundrazr.com/perks/3Fzb6?ref=ab_f5bjw2.

How does Antifa define Fascist?
1)
2) “Fascism is a creation of race hatred and its politically organized expression.” - Willhelm Reich, The Mass Psychology of Fascism (1933). “Fascism is capitalism plus murder.” - Upton Sinclair “Repression by brute force is always a confession of the inability to make use of the better weapons of the intellect — better because they alone give promise of final success. This is the fundamental error from which Fascism suffers and which will ultimately cause its downfall…that its foreign policy, based as it is on the avowed principle of force in international relations, cannot fail to give rise to an endless series of wars that must destroy all of modern civilization requires no further discussion. To maintain and further raise our present level of economic development, peace among nations must be assured. But they cannot live together in peace if the basic tenet of the ideology by which they are governed is the belief that one’s own nation can secure its place in the community of nations by force alone. ” - Ludwig von Mises, Liberalism: A Socio-Economic Exposition (1927). “Spent most of the day reading fascisti leaflets. They certainly have turned the whole country into an army. From cradle to grave one is cast in the mould of fascismo and there can be no escape … It is certainly a socialist experiment in that it destroys individuality. It destroys liberty.” - Harold Nicolson, The Harold Nicolson Diaries : 1919-1964 (2004). “The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt “A fascist is one whose lust for money or power is combined with such an intensity of intolerance toward those of other races, parties, classes, religions, cultures, regions or nations as to make him ruthless in his use of deceit or violence to attain his ends….If we define an American fascist as one who in case of conflict puts money and power ahead of human beings, then there are undoubtedly several million fascists in the United States.” - Henry A. Wallace “Fascism is the cult of organised murder, invented by the arch-enemies of society. It tends to destroy civilization and revert man to his most barbarous state. Mussolini and Hitler might well be called the devils of an age, for they are playing hell with civilization.” - Marcus Garvey, Authors take Sides on the Spanish War, 1937. 3)

hey ur blog is great i wante to kno do u have any readin on race in eaurope bc mostly on this site and often its american racism thats talked abt so do u have st abt europe thanks<3
There’s a lot of stuff that’s come out recently about fascism & anti-fascism recently that focuses on Europe. Two we can recommend:
Militant Anti-Fascism by M. Testa
Against The Fascist Creep by Alexander Reid Ross
as far as race goes, biology is the root, and culture is the flower.
Wrong, Anon. As any actual biologist, geneticist, or physical anthropologist could tell you.“Race” has zero basis in biology. There are no genetic markers found exclusively within one “racial” grouping of people. None. Race is not biological or scientific reality; it is a social construct, invented in America shortly after European colonization as a way to keep poor white colonists from uniting with slaves and Native Americans and overthrowing the ruling class. It’s laughable, Anon, that you believe that culture is race-based. Take “white culture,” which is the result of white supremacists’ demonstration of their love and respect for their culture by randomly and thoughtlessly mixing every “white” European culture together, creating an incomprehensible mishmash of languages, local and regional allegiances, belief systems, systems of governance, foods, art forms, etc. By slapping a “white culture” label on all of it, white supremacists ironically obliterate the very distinctions and differences that made each culture special and unique; erasing any meaning or value inherent in the cultures white supremacists claim are so special and dear to them.
Seriously, you’re going to sit there and tell us that the Albanians and Aragonese and Armenians and Asturians and Basque and Castilians and Catalans and Corsicans and Croatians and Danish and Dutch and English and Estonians and Finns and French and Frisians and Galicians and Germans and Georgians and Greeks and Huguenots and Hungarians and Irish and Italians and Leonese and Normans and Poles and Portuguese and Prussians and Roma and Romanians and Russians and Sardinians and Scots and Serbs and Spaniards and Ukrainians and Venetians and Walloons and Welsh are all just “white culture?” Do you actually believe that 100+ distinct cultures - many of whom have been or are at war with each other - can all just be lumped together as “white culture” and that term will have a valid, distinct meaning that in no way dishonors or erases the distinctiveness or special nature of each of those individual cultures?
Maybe you should try to think things through a bit more carefully before accepting glib, racist metaphors as something to base your conception of reality on.
what do I do when someone tells me Jewish isn't a race
Ah yes. We know the type:
We don’t imagine the person who told you this will be intelligent enough to comprehend the following, but here’s the breakdown of how wrong they are:1) There is no biological basis for race. There is no gene that is exclusive to members of any one “racial” category. The concept of “race” has been roundly rejected by geneticists and anthropologists as having zero scientific validity. As anthropologist John Shea points out, “Race is folk taxonomy, not science. The variables used to organize it, such as skin color and hair texture, are arbitrary choices.”2) If race isn’t a scientifcally-valid construct to describe reality, then just what is it? It’s a social construct - something that doesn’t actually exist but that humans have taken a hold of as a way to organize their social world. As Brian Jones put it, race is real “…in the same way that Wednesday is real. But it’s also made up in the same way that Wednesday is made up.”3) Because race is a made-up social construct, we prefer the term “racialized” as a term, since race isn’t something people are, it’s something that’s done to them - an identity foisted upon them.4) Racialization historically has been super-arbitrary and what people think of as “races” varies with geography and time. Since it’s not a scientifically-valid concept, country of origin, language spoken, and religious beliefs have all been used to determine what racial category one group or another has belonged to over the years - all in an attempt by the dominant “race” to keep “lesser races” subordinate to them. For example, in the late 1800s, neither Italians nor the Irish were considered to be white. There are parts of the word even today that would consider Catholics to be a separate racial category.
(above: anti-Irish racist propaganda from the late 1800s)
5) So because racialization is a social construct that changes with time and geography, Jews have previously been considered a separate “race” - certainly by the nazis in the most extreme and tragic example. Karen Brodkin has written about how Jews in America “became white” in the 1940s. Currently we are witnessing the racialization of Muslims in very much the same way that Jews were racialized. So to sum up: race is a made-up concept that’s not substantively real or scientifically-valid. Because of this, people have historically used all manner or criteria to try to delineate racial boundaries, including religion, language, and geographic origin. Some of these, mixed with physical stereotyping, were combined to racialize Jews. There have been other examples of ethnic, linguistic, and/or religious groups being racialized and we’re currently seeing the same thing happen to Muslims.
White Nationalism, Take Four
Racist: All your scientific nonsense about genetic markers and objective measurements won't stop our white nation!
Antifa: So for the fourth time: how are you deciding who is and who isn't "white?"
Racist: Simple - if your ancestors are European, then you're white! Ta-dah! LONG LIVE THE WHITE RACE!
Antifa: So when you say "Europe," are you including countries that were part of the Ottoman Empire? You know like Serbia, Romania...
Racist: Sure
Antifa: ...Turkey...
Racist: Uh, ok
Antifa: ...Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Lybia, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia...
Racist: Whoa whoa whoa! Now hold on there!
Antifa: What's the matter? The Ottoman Empire extended over all these areas at one point or another, so if you're going to include Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey in your "European ancestry" definition, then you're going to have to include these as well.
Racist: OK, we don't mean historical Europe. Just the parts of the Ottoman Empire that were in continental Europe are where white people are from.
Antifa: Oh, of course! Continental Europe! So we're still including Turkey, and all the Mediterranean as "white," right?
Racist: Yes.
German racist: Fuck no!
Antifa: Then there's Russia. It's split between Europe and Asia. So what do you want to do with Russians? Are they all "white," all "non-white," or does it depend on what side of the Ural Mountains one's ancestors come from, in which case two-thirds of Russia would be "non-white?"
Racist: They're white. No wait, some of them are white and some of them aren't.
Antifa: what if a person's Russian ancestors traveled from east to west 100 years ago, or 500 years ago, or 1000 years ago? Does that mean that the person today is "white" or "non-white?"
Antifa: And if we're going with "continental Europe" as the origin of all white people, what race have we decided the people of England, Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are, given that none of those countries are part of continental Europe? And are people with origins in Kazakhstan "white?"
RACIST: COME ON!!! YOU'RE KILLING ME HERE!!!
Antifa: And what do you mean by "ancestors?" Geneticists have demonstrated that humans first existed in Africa and then migrated from there - so what specific generation are you using to determine if someone's ancestors are European and what is your objective, scientifically-valid rationale for declaring that all non-European ancestors prior to the European ones don't count?
Racist: Oh look, it's getting dark out and my mom told me I had to come home by now for supper so bye-bye!
