if youâre keeping up with Mob Psycho 100, you may have noticed that some scenes will occasionally shift to a more abstract, âpaint-likeâ art style. youâve almost definitely noticed this in the ending sequence
what you may not have known is that thatâs not just a styleâ thatâs actual paint.
âpaint-on-glassâ animation is a very uncommon animation technique, in no small part due to the fact that itâs incredibly difficult and labor-intensive. itâs remarkable â and possibly, until now, unheard of â to see it in a big budget animation series like MP100, not only for small scenes but for an entire 90 second sequenceâ and itâs even more remarkable that itâs all done by one person
Miyo Sato specializes in paint-on-glass animation, having created several short films with it. she created the entirety of MP100â˛s ending sequence as well as several notable scenes like the appearance of the first spirit in episode 1.Â
itâs really inspiring to see so many talented artists not only given work to do on a big project like MP100 but given so much freedom with their style and art direction. i really hope the success of this series will inspire other animated projects to be more creative and try new things in regards to art and animation
