Shoot Nine: final shoot
This shoot was a very last minute thing. I was going through the final stages of the book for printing and I realised that there were some specific subjects that I hadn't included - also they would fit purposefully contrasting specific images. I had a lot of images I liked and wanted to include but they didn't necessarily fit the context of the book - each spread of the book has either one full bleed image or two contrasting images, so I wanted to make sure each page was purposeful. I was on a tight schedule this shoot as I needed to send my book to print the next day, so I spent about two/ three hours out

Title of work:
West London
Introductory text:
‘West London’ is a documentary book that explores the concept of gentrification and sustainability, as a result of suburbanisation that has taken place in the area over the last decade. This photo book is filled with insight that encourages dialogue and outward thinking with those in and out of this space. Each photograph aims to reveal an aspect of the diverse culture and authenticity encapsulated amongst this urban environment.
Synopsis:
West London By Meheret Beyene
Photographed between 2020-2021, West London is a photobook that captures concepts of religion, gentrification and sustainability as a result of suburbanisation. Within the book there are subjects of architecture, community and interesting aesthetics that make up the environment. The growth of this area has been rapid over the last decade and there are many contrasting characteristics of growth that make West London unique. The project was inspired by my daily interest in photographing my neighbourhood and the idea of preserving the history that is rapidly changing around me.
I found it interesting the more I looked into my neighbourhood the more I found it was changing or has already changed. For me documenting contrasting environments that physically show the change, feels more powerful than saying there has been a change. This is the reason why there is no text in the book apart from the title, as I felt the photographs really sum up a lot about the area. Not adding text in the book, I intend for my photographs to influence the spectator’s opinion of how the project as a whole is connected or identifiable. With their own image of London in mind, the viewer should create their own judgment of the area and start to notice characteristics that would make West London identifiable to them by the end of the book. I intentionally selected contrasting images that highlight similarities and differences. It is intended to be a documentation and insight to the reality of the West London’s urban environment growth.
For example, the old infrastructure contrasting new developments within the same place or empty green space being built on, I feel it is interesting to witness. These key features create the unique urban environment of West London and how it is changing. The photographs document West London in its rawest form, the old to the new, capturing the essence of growth. The project is very much current and so, there is an underlying context of social distancing and the current ‘emptiness’ that lockdown restrictions has brought to the area is reflected.
