It’s been five years to the day since I [officially] started working in the hospitality industry. At the time, I was mid-way through my formal training as a chef, and it seems fitting that just a few days ago, I [officially] completed my double degree at uni :) Here’s to the future! A little bit of calligraphy practice - copying out font alphabets!
A sonnet by John Keats, in ballpoint cursive.
Calligraphic variations on a theme - the logo on the side of a Hacker-Pschorr Weisse box. I shall try to get back into the practice of writing more regularly :) This could very well be the start of another daily project, upon the anniversary of the project for which this blog is named
It’s exactly one year ago that I started the 100/100 project, and today is also the day that I have officially completed my undergrad studies (for which the project & exhibition was a component). This could very well be the start of another daily project - a sketch done today, in ballpoint pen; the one eye[d] deer that will potentially start it all again :) I also did a bit of calligraphy practice today, which I’ll upload in a following post!
This painting was featured in the daily project and the exhibition, but underneath the oil paint and the black gesso was an earlier piece - done in Sharpie, for a performance at uni - which was slowly seeping through to be clearly visible. I re-painted this portrait almost entirely, in the hope that the Sharpie would stay hidden behind the now-fresh oils :) In any case, it was a good chance to align the skin tone with the original reference image and improve the texture of the impasto, emulating the subject’s woolen jumper. Merry Christmas to you all! :D Here’s a video that hasn’t appeared on the blog before - the final portrait from the project, completed just a few days before the exhibition opened, on the 26th October! As a result of the short interim between painting and installation, I think the portrait might have been almost dry when it went into the glass cabinets at the Library (thanks to fast-drying linseed oil, and relatively thin layers of paint). I’ve always liked the fun in this image, which is particularly evident in the nail polish worn by the subject, which matches the nose on Bubble o’ Bill :) Oil on canvas, 30 x 40cm Music excerpt: Arrival of the Birds/Transformation by The Cinematic Orchestra All musical credit goes to them :)
Here’s a time-lapse of the exhibition launch! :) I think that the rainy weather might have contributed to the number of people at the Launch, but that’s entirely alright :) It was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, with the party almost being shut down before it really began; fortunately, it all got sorted out in the end. 1890 shots, one every ten seconds = 5.25hrs Played back at 10 frames/sec

A poem which was made popular by the 1989 film, Dead Poets Society - O Captain! by Walt Whitman Upon considering the poem as a whole, its use in the film resonates on a few levels, especially given the recurrent darker theme of death and the journey that the students (and audience) have undertaken.

I realised that I should have probably posted some calligraphic works in watercolour, given the pattern of previous sections - here’s a watercolour rendition of Words to Keep Inside Your Pocket which was floating around online a little while ago. I really like learning new and interesting words (check out this lovely post that I just saw!), and it was a curious challenge to write with a brush rather than a pen :) Watercolour on paper, 10 x 7.5cm; decaptych(?) - ten panels, anyway :P

A quote from Vincent van Gogh, the great artist and wonderful[ly] human being. The quote itself is, as far as I can find, from a letter which he wrote to his brother (Theo). This is written in gold gouache with a similar nib to that which I've been using for the ink works (vintage steel nibs, which were sent from the Netherlands - van Gogh’s birthplace) :) Gold gouache on black card, 12 x 21cm
A rather nice poem by E.E. Cummings, employing the use of brackets to create different readings of the poem, whispering to the reader (or subject) - have a look at this post that talks about the wonderful potential of parentheses! :D
In hindsight, perhaps I should have used the blue ink for the ‘whispered’ parts rather than purple, as it’s rather close to the black ink :/ Ink on A4 paper
