Following the end of Metal Cardbot W, the development team held a Q&A session where they revealed some behind the scenes stories about Flame Nova:
Flame Nova's personality: according to the developers, Flame Nova is surprisingly not the type to hold a grudge. As a soldier, if an opponent beats him, he accepts it honorably. That’s why when he was defeated and sealed by Jun in Episode 26, he fully acknowledged Jun's victory and accepted his fate. When he refused to be summoned near the end of Season 2 and the start of W, it wasn't out of lingering resentment or a distrust of humans, he was simply trying to tell Jun that the right time for his return hadn't come yet.
Unexpected popularity: the dev team was initially worried that Flame Nova was portrayed as too villainous and that fans might reject him, so they were completely blown away by his explosive popularity.
His role in MCB W was almost scrapped: in the original script, Flame Nova was supposed to be written out entirely after being sealed, with zero appearances in W. However, the writers needed a powerhouse Metal Cardbot who could stand up to Solidhorn and Tyrant Zero to show off just how strong they were. When looking for the right fit, Flame Nova turned out to be the perfect candidate.
Water spraying abilities: just like Phoenix Fire, Flame Nova is a fire truck type cardbot meaning he's actually fully capable of spraying water from his ladder cannon. However, he refuses to use it simply because it doesn't fit his personality. Blaion, who is also a fire truck, can spray water too but avoids doing so for the exact same reason.
Details added in Season 3 highlight that beneath his strict exterior, he was actually a deeply compassionate commander. When Blue Cop is heavily defeated by a powerful foe and recklessly tries to keep fighting, Flame Nova gently steps in to take over. He also refrains from scolding Savannard when he fails to prevent Tyrant Zero’s revival, and even respectfully accepts savannard’s reminder that he is no longer his superior officer. Back in Season 2, during his battle with Blue Cop, he noted that Blue Cop had grown strong enough to stand against him and in the Audio Theater, he expressed genuine admiration when Blue Cop finally defeated him. It’s clear he still cares deeply for those who served under him.
