hi, I'm cardo-de-comer, sometimes just cardo. I needed to update my pinned post for a year now I think...

i am glad that you are somewhat aware of the connotations. however, you should consider either altering the character's design in some way to not evoke that imagery, or to avoid the character entirely. even if it is not "intentionally" racist, it's still using the visual language and design choices that have a longstanding racist history. therefore regardless of the creator's intention, or your own intention when making fan art, you are alienating people of color and making us feel unsafe. other connotations that you should consider: your drawing has an emphasis on exaggerated proportions (height, large hands) and animal-like features. this in combination with the black skin and donut mouth feel very pointed as a racist caricature, as all of these techniques are used together to dehumanize black people. these are things to keep in mind for the future.

I don't want to argue but I think there's a line, where your own vision is and where the original intentions are. I never mean anything bad for people of color and this is my statement and that's it

late edit: I do want to apologize, mainly for upsetting you. I still stand with my statement but I'm not overreacting now at least. I guess I still need to learn some things

Yo just letting you know that drawing bubble lips like you did on your last picture has antiblack racist connotations and is super uncomfortable to see esp on a solid black character. Idk if you know this or not so not hard feelings.

Ok I'm very aware of that and I DID NOT meant anything like that. I cannot speak for Edmund Mcmillen but I am pretty sure he also did not meant that, when creating the character. Steven (the character in question) literally just looks like that but nothing in his story/game has anything to do with racism. There's a time loop and depression instead. I think it was also pushed by stylization/color scheme of the game too and it looks less bad in original.

You have a HELL there? Have you ever drawn it? I honestly didn't know, seeing all those demons and angels in the City, I thought that was the only place for them. Could you please explain how it works?

You didn't think Devil was homeless did you? It does exist in the same place where the city does, not like you would imagine hell underground somewhere. I really liked the concept of Gehenna in christianity so it works the same way - hell starts right outside the city's walls. So that's where the best guards stand watch

what's the lore here?

short answer:

basically some could've-been-human, an angel and the devil get tortured for eternity tomorrow because their gods are morons and also Reasons tm

long answer is in my pinned post, there's a link to another post with lore... it's mostly up to date but there's always a lot of details that change or adding up but the basic part should be enough to understand who tf these guys are

I've been contemplating your blog for some time, and there is something that's been in the back of my head for a while, so mind if I ramble for a bit?

The name "The Eight One" has always bugged me, mostly because it doesn't feel like a name, but a title. "The Eight One" implies the existence of seven before, and him being a divine being, we can argue that those seven are divine as well.

The problem is that there aren't enough to fit all the slots. We could cross out Sun, Moon, Time and Death, but that leaves out three more.

At the same time, Sun and Moon have been time and time again compared to parents of The Eight One, implying that they created him, so perhaps he is their eight creation?

Basically: does the name "The Eight One" has something to do with the rest of the gods? Or did it come from something completely unrelated?

It doesn't have to do with the rest of the gods, you were right thinking that Eighth one is simply their eight creation. The others before him are either gone or still exist (Lyra being one of them... there's also something like 7 days of creation going on). But they are specifically the creations of Sun and Moon. Death is a creation of Time for example. And Sun didn't bother to name the soul properly because they just don't care enough about most of their creations anyway (they come and go and Sun will stay for another thousand years so someone else's life is just a blink of an eye for them)
