Rusty Nail’s Recipes

Dear Drinkers,

I first met Rusty at one of the con’s a few years ago and I commissioned an out of work derpy themed drink recipe and he did a tarot card reading for me too! I don’t remember what the outcome of the tarot card reading was but it was a fun time.

However I really became friends with Rusty during last year’s Trotcon. We ended up being roommates and we were both on the tumblr panel. He was a really chill guy to hang with, and was a super supportive guy. I remember him really supporting @theghostlymuse when someone broke one of her home made statuettes. One of my favorite parts of the con was staying up super late in the lobby of the last night of the con talking about Dungeons and Dragons and other nerdy stuff with him and a bunch of other bronies and tumblrpon mods.

And if you haven’t heard he makes some pretty mean booze! :3 He brought a bunch of handmade drinks for everyone who roomed with him and the Honey Vanilla Infused Vodka he gave me was the tastiest drink I’ve ever had!

One thing I really do regret is that we talked about the Out of Work Derpy drink recipe he made for me and he asked for me to forward it to him so he could make a proper Rusty Nail Post on his blog for it and I just never got around to digging through my old Con scrap book and finding it… Till now. :/

But in the little time I knew Rusty I think he’d want this recipe shared!

So without further ado;

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It’s Out of Work Derpy

Normally Rusty Uses the best high end ingredients and liquors when making a Themed drink. But he knew the moment I told him about the theme of the blog that only the cheap stuff would suffice!

An Out of Work Derpy

Ingredients:

1oz Smirinoff Blueberry

1oz Smirinoff Vanilla

2oz Pinapple Juice

Ice

Chilled Martini Glass

Cocktail Shaker

Blue Curacao

Special Equipment:

A strainer.

Making an Out of Work Derpy.

Chill a Martini glass; Rinse the martini glass. Do not dry it. Simply place it inside the freezer and wait 10 to 15 minutes for the glass to freeze. The post-rinse water surroundings will help make the glass freeze more quickly.

Add Ice, both Vodkas and pineapple juice to cocktail shaker.

Shake well!

Remove martini glass from freezer

Strain shaker into the martini glass

Slowly add splash of curacao.

Drink!

Welp, hopefully I did rusty’s style justice! According to Rusty this drink should taste like you are actually eating a blueberry muffin :3 I’ve yet to try it out irl cause I literally just refound the recipe and I don’t have the supplies yet, but rest assured I’m gonna make this drink this weekend in honor of Rusty!

People around my part of the world always say that the kindest ones are the ones taken too soon. And that fits perfectly to this case. Dream on eternal you wonderful man you, you will be missed, and remembered and carried on through the ones who loved you, befriended you and admired/respected you (as is my case). Keep on doing what you love in the stars beyond! ( Rusty designed the image on the inner left bottle! I can't recall what it was for but Its one of the last bit of things I have from my conversations with him ; w ; I just wanted to include it. )

Wish we could have had a drink with you, Rusty, But we'll will toast in your honor.

I didn't know rusty well...but well...I'm moved...and I remember this song from a little while back. I'm so so bad with words but just...here's to you, friend. *raises glass* this one's for you.

I like a lot of people didn't know Rusty beyond the point of admiring/respecting and in the first stages of friends. In fact its sad to admit but we just started to talk more and more recently too. He was always so full of such interesting ideas and I've grown to find out we had a lot more common! When I first met him I was just new to the tumblrpon scene, and I saw him making drinks for other ponies. And it felt like such a right of acceptance and passage to have a drink designed by him. I know the moment I saw Romancedy get one I was legit like OMG THAT'S ME. Like it was one of the biggest honors I felt in the pony community. It was just the thing you know. IT was because of Rusty too that Romancedy got her nickname "heart eyes". I even added that into the bio, and hope that he knew that it was because of him. I don't know much else to say, that others haven't but, I hope that Rusty is in a better place full of stars and pirates and mermaids and all the unlimited drink ingredients at his disposal! Thank you for all you've done for not just us in the community, but for Tech and for your family and for all those who have been lucky to have met you. Just thank you so very much. And I can't wait to get that drink you designed made! Cheers to you!

I'm stuck at my parents' place for the rest of the week, struggling with the fact that one of the people I looked up to is gone, while aving to put on a cheerful face for my family and at the same time studying for upcoming exams.

So, I commissioned a good friend, @bluebrush09arts , for a picture of Rusty as I saw him when he posted things on tumblr; a suave guy who always knew what to do and say to make people smile.

A man who helped me on bad days, when I was broken hearted and didn't know what to do with myself. Not just the few times I sent him an ask and he took the time to reply, but also unknowingly, inspiring me to try and be creative in ways that come easier to me than drawing, showing me that writing and unconventional ways of expression, like custom drinks, are absolutely valid, and thus just cheering me up when I was down.

Rusty was truly an original, someone who won't easily replaced. But he will live on in our hearts as tumblrpon's primier bartender and a good friend to any- and everyone.

I, for one, will be sad to let him go.

But, since I am a Pastafarian, and I know that Rusty definetely falls into the category of people who deserve a spot in heaven, I'm sure that he'll enjoy the beer volcano up there.

Fisher recommended potentially letting people skype-visit Rusty and I brought this up to his parents. They said they are absolutely okay with it. I just kinda need to finagle the details, but I’ll see about setting that up. There’s at least one tablet here so it should be feasible.

I’ll probably come up with a schedule of when I’ll specifically be there, and give you guys a list of times you can Skype or Discord call and say what you need to. Mind, his family and the nursing staff are going to have priority, so a call may be postponed, interrupted, or muted on our end at will. But if y'all are okay with that, I’ll try to set it up.

This isn’t really meant to be private, but it is directed right at Rusty, Tech and his immediate family. So, no need to listen to it if you aren’t those people unless if you want an unnecessary dousing of sad feels.

Hey Rusty, Its a pretty oddly timed coincidence, this happening while I'm on my trip in Las Vegas. I'll be visiting my grandmom who's favorite drink is a Rusty Nail. Wish that I could be there in person to read this to you though I'm sure Tech is doing a fantasic job ^^ Its always been great chatting with you and getting to hear about your new adventures and projects in your life. Also it's been a pleasure to share your drinks with my family as they are continued to be surprised how amazing they are. My dad always says that you can make him a drink anytime. Heck each one surprised me in a great way and I can only imagine what you're planning next.

It's been busy on this end, after the trip I'm planning to move out of our current apartment and then do a local convention with my girlfriend, Sandra. Been busy though with my artwork and trying to improve upon it and hoping the new location we head out to may have a nicer job as well.

It's a little tough writing this though I know you're especially going through the thick of it right now. That being said I'm looking forward to seeing ya soon and having another chat with ya, beard, drink, and all. Heaven forbid, what would we do without our pleasant gentleman and drink mixmaster.

I know that if I try to write a proper introduction here I'm going to be sitting here for three hours re-typing variations of the same paragraph, so I'll just get right into story time. One of the memories of Rusty that sticks out the strongest to me is when I was in senior year in college. He and I and a bunch of other people hung out in a Skype room and talked tumblr horse things, it was a great time. One day, I was having a minor freakout. For whatever reason, possibly spending too much time absorbed in the melancholy of my own work, combined with the constant pressure to commit to lasting life choices that there is on people on their way out of the education system, I was really feeling like I was against the clock. That I hadn't done enough with my life to date, and that it was going to pass me by. Rusty solved this dilemma with five words. Rusty asked how old I was. 21, I said. "You are tiny wee babbu", he replied. Words that in the light of recent events, are more true than they've ever been. It sounds absolutely absurd, but this nugget of casual wisdom profoundly affected me. It's hard to get things like perspective into the head of a young person but this disarming observation drilled an ounce of it in at just the right time. A little nudge in perspective taught me in that moment, first that I was being an idiot kid (in no such words), but also that what I was worrying about - the should haves, the could haves, what had never been and could never be - was not worth the time spent. If I may be so indulgent as to quote myself, you can't know what potholes are on the road not travelled. This week, Rusty has another lesson to teach, that's ultimately part of the same one. As I write this, there is still uncertainty about what will ultimately happen, but the lesson is there regardless, and it's a simple one. Enjoy what you have while it's here, because you never know when a pothole's gonna come along and knock it out of your hands. (Potholes are kind of rude like that.) Remembering the past and hoping for the future can be valuable, but the present is where we live, and you probably won't go too far astray by making the best of that. Kind of silly that I, a person who has spent literally years writing a character whose major challenge is learning this lesson, have to be reminded to take it on board, but there you go. Life imitates art. My last proper conversation with Rusty was last July, and I do wish it was more recent than that. We talked a bit about Banana Pie - y'know, the borderline spammer who gives u a banan in an ask - and how after a long time of finding it irritating, he saw the value in even that (many blogs respond to it as one of their first asks), and then made a recipe from it. This was how I saw him. Talented with distinction in an uncommon art form, with a love of community and creativity. It's a limited impression, of course, I'm not one of the people who talked to him every day. But I talked above about the profound way my life was affected through my limited conversations with him. I can't help but wonder how much he's improved the lives of those closest to him. I based a character off of Rusty. He's a bartender in one of my stories that I started a few years ago, a core member of the community with level wisdom and a warmth of heart in equal measure. I nearly asked if I could use the character of Rusty Nail in that role, but I decided against it, because I felt like there was no way I knew him well enough to do him justice in a role with some specific story needs. But regardless, there's a little bit of Rusty at the heart of that character. And regardless of what happens, these are the little ways we'll always have him. The impressions from little things like telling a panicking college kid that he is a tiny wee babbu.

Hey Rusty, this is Truffle Mint! I never really properly thanked you for lending me a hand with my table at Trotcon. It was a really cool thing to do for someone you had barely met, and I've told my friends that it was an awesome thing you did, but I feel like I might have dropped the ball letting you know.
