Green Care Farms (GCF) for people with dementia in the Netherlands and other European countries are innovative, successful, and growing model. It is estimated that there are currently 1,100 GCFs in the Netherlands and that about 15% of these are open to people with dementia. Various therapeutic benefits have been reported in the practice and research literature both for people with dementia and their family care partners who often desperately need a break (respite) from caring for their relatives. Little work has been done in the U.S. when it comes to Care Farms for this population in the form of day services, residential care, and end of life care. The purpose of this archival blog is to raise awareness to this major gap in the health care system in the U.S. and encourage and inform efforts to bridge it. One successful example of a program where people with dementia participate on Care Farms is Lifeside care Farming (also called Flathead Care Farming) in Montana, which is led by Maarten Fischer. Maarten, a Dutch native, is an expert in multi-functional farms.
