first year
honestly i think the selling point of romance for me (and where it usually fails to land) is 'can i imagine these people sharing an in-joke'
like, are they in cahoots. can they laugh together. do they have a similar enough or at least complementary enough outlook that they can connect over something being funny (even if it's funny in a fucked up way! sometimes those are the best in-jokes!)
that's not necessarily true love in and of itself, but it does feel like an essential component to me
(Plot twist: the bottle is still spinning)
(Lie. We all know Tommy is all for it - to talk only about Steve. At first I wanted to draw hearts in Tommy's eyes too.)
happy new year to iylo eddie and steve. i wish them many more fire escape heart to hearts.
ohhhh THANK YOU! happy new year, have some fire escape revelations from eddie pov :)
Steve speaks slowly, intentionally. "For what it's worth... I don't agree. So, I think you are what he's looking for." Eddie feels his everything tilt. Steve eyes are dark when they meet. It's his usual schtick—saying one thing, meaning something else. But now, it's like the letter was the fucking decoder and he can see the truth as it is. Right in front of him. "That's... that's neither here nor there." His voice sounds weak, even to him. Steve reaches out and pulls on his wrist, fingers curling in a way that's familiar. Tightening like he can sense his hesitation, voice soft but clear, no question. No hiding from it. "It's here. Trust me."

29. A kiss to the back of the hand
Eddie x Carol
29. a kiss to the back of the hand + eddie/carol (this one got long. it's in wild card universe/future fic territory, whoooops)
Eddie asks Carol to marry him when they're in bed. He doesn't mean to, it just slips out. She says no, of course. But he goes down on her after and it's forgotten. He says it again ("Marry me, Perkins?") when they're picking out a video to rent and she lets him choose, for once. She clicks her tongue and doesn't say anything more. Eddie pulls her to him once they're outside the store and kisses her, and she pinches his cheek. He wonders how he'd have to say it for it to stick. He tries again—getting down on one knee, bones cracking as he does it—when they're on a walk together, not on the beach because there are no beaches, but they're within smelling distance of water, he thinks. Yet she bursts out laughing before he can get the words out. He pretends he was tying his shoes, then unties one of hers. "I'm just not a very romantic person," Carol says a few days later. He thinks she just romanced the hell out of him, honestly, but he lets it go.
19. A kiss underwater
STOMMY
19. a kiss underwater + stommy - anything for my becca!!!
It starts as a challenge to see who can stay underwater longer; it's a game they've played before, too many times to be interesting, but still. Steve almost always wins, until Tommy starts making himself hyperventilate before going under, emerging the dizzy winner. Tommy tries to remember whose idea it was. For one of them to release all their breath, settling at the bottom of the Harrington pool, the other swimming above before they got the signal (not an actual signal, just the sense of one—it's all they needed, really) to swim down, pass the air from one to the other. It was a different kind of exertion, getting lightheaded after three, four passes. No time to truly catch his breath above water before he was going back down, the sun bouncing off the water making everything sparkly, almost painful. It must've been Steve's idea, Tommy lands on. He's at the bottom of the pool and through squinting eyes, he can see the blurry shape of Steve's form paddling above. It has Steve written all over it. His ears are feeling plugged, uncomfortable, and relief blooms when Steve starts swimming toward him. He reaches out, pulling Steve down. Their knees bumping together because it's the only way to feel grounded when they're floating. Steve's mouth on his, but he doesn't breathe out like he does. Tommy pauses, but Steve just kisses him. Hands on either side of his face, knee settling against his thigh. Tommy holds his waist, pushing up. Steve doesn't stay at the bottom of the pool, he follows him up, hand clinging to his shoulder. Separates after a moment. "What was that?" Tommy asks when they emerge. He struggles to tread, still catching his breath. Steve shrugs. "Thought I'd try something different. Did it work?" Tommy tries to find an answer. His nose dips back under, eyes trained on Steve's smile. He doesn't know how to say it did, in a way. "Okay. My turn," Steve says, when Tommy doesn't respond. He takes a deep breath and sinks under. Tommy waits to follow, looks for it. The signal.

32: a kiss while someone watches and stomrol (is this how we say steve/tommy/carol these days?). your choice on who’s watching who ;)
32. a kiss while someone watches + stomarol/stomrol???? (idk what it is either)
Carol has only kissed one person. And she wants to keep it that way, deciding at some point or another, that Tommy was her person. She thinks the idea of the one is dumb, but it also makes sense. Why keep looking, when she's found exactly what she wants? What else could she need? It's harder to stick to that logic when Steve is around. Carol watches, fascinated, as he brings girl after girl to their little parties of just the four of them. Always pinning someone to his locker, taking up the backseat with some chick while she and Tommy sit in the front and actually watch the movie. Carol likes to make out in her bed, when she can do something about it. Rolling around, making smacking noises that Tommy wags his eyebrows at? No thank you. But still, she's curious. He must be good at it, she thinks, for all these girls to put up with the rest of it. When she tells Tommy about this particular train of thought (after all, she tells him everything), he shrugs. "I've never thought about it." "Really." She stares him down, until she's pretty sure she can peer directly into his brain. And she knows that he's thought about it, maybe more than her. How could he not? The next time they're passing a bottle around, Carol says it. "I don't get what all the fuss is about, that's all." "You're so full of shit, Carol," Steve says easily. But she sees the comment stick with him. And when she says it—well, why don't you give Tommy a kiss, and he can tell me?—she sees his glance. "Fine." "Don't I get a say in this?" Tommy says, but he gets his weight on his knees and Steve crawls his way, across the nicely carpeted living room floor. Carol watches. She sees Tommy's eyes close first, sees Steve's stay open too long. Sees him glance her way, again, lifting his lips in a smile in her direction because he's an idiot just like her. And he kisses Tommy, and it lasts too long for any of them to pretend it didn't happen.
