Discussion: Women in the video games industry part 1 - How many girl games exist?
I know right, we're getting into this discussion today: the role of women in the video games industry. It's a long debate that I don't think we will ever finish but it needs to be addressed, not for my sake, but sometimes I think about the future and what my children will be into and if they want to choose careers in game design because they were influenced by their dad and his silly passion for playing games; I wouldn't want my daughter to be discriminated in her career industry only because she's a woman and not by any other attribute. Five years ago a video went viral and I'm assuming it sparked a debate (I don't know where I was and why I didn't hear about this) with regards to marketing in retail stores. The video is of a young girl in a toy section of a store and her father is recording her while she rants about girls having to buy pink stuff but the boy section has other colors and superheroes. She's clearly upset about how people trick girls into buying pink stuff when girls can like superheros and boys can like princesses. Lots of other editors/writers have taken this starting point to discuss how marketing is done in video games and how it has now been tailored for boys. The phrase "Oh, girls don't play video games" has now become the old stereotype. We can all trace it to the Nintendo era saving video games and releasing the NES back in the early 80's. Nintendo set up gaming events and conducted research here in US and found out that mainly boys play the console because mainly boys were attending these events. It was enough to give Nintendo the green light to start subsequent marketing campaigns directed towards boys 10 and under. With the release of the SNES the marketing campaigns targeted boys 10-15 years old. As the years went on the target demographic grew older and other console makers/developers continued that trend of marketing towards boys. That's not to say that other research wasn't conducted and other studios didn't market to girls, that other stuff definitely happened, but when we compare Nintendo's influence it's easy to understand why other publishers continued that trend of marketing towards boys and young men. Today we can see it especially when we think about shooter games. Who is playing these games and what comes to your mind? Are there young girls tearing it up online in Call of Duty or is it boys? You would probably think boys and that's okay to think that now that we're making you aware of the sterotype. It's been drilled into our heads since we started looking at advertisements that those types of themes are for boys. What about Candy Crush? Angry Birds? Pokemon GO? Who is playing these games, boys or girls? EVERYONE! THESE GAMES ARE HUGE!! But here is the plot twist: how many of you consider those mobile apps video games? Surpsisingly enough not many people who play these apps nonstop consider themselves gamers even though these apps are video games on a mobile platform. It's this weird mentality that people have where we think "You can only play video games on console or PC and you're a gamer only if you spend tons of hours playing games online" which I think is wrong. It's a fallacy that we have created in our heads for those who consider themselves "non-gamers". Sure I don't presitge in COD multiplayer but I have three stars on each Angry Birds Star Wars level. Yeah you're a gamer too! The reason why I bring this up is because while we may think that video games are marketed towards boys and young men those specific video games marketed to that demographic do not represent all video games. Shooting games marketed towards boys do not represent all video games. Who is the target demographic for Pokemon GO, Overwatch, Inside, Overcooked, Minecraft, Resident Evil 7?? I don't think it's boys or girls and I think it's more of an age group being targeted which is just like every other industry e.g. movies. The sterotypes exist but I think as time moves on and developers start to market smarter by focusing on age groups rather than gender, which by the way cuts your market in half, we will see the beginning of end for those sterotypes. The video games industry is predominantly male. Why? We can sit down and figure out why but that's not todayās discussion. Are video games marketed towards boys? Yes, a lot are but many more games are marketed towards everyone. Do girl games exist? Well that depends on what you want to define a girl game? Women are making lots of advancements in video games and it's totally cool. Many of us encourage stereotypes and that's not cool so when it comes to saying "Oh, girls don't play video games" or "You're a girl you should play Cooking Mama" we should stop that. What do you think? DO you think video games should be marketed by gender? Do you feel comfortable allowing your daughters to jump into video games? Let me know what you think. @carlosronco
I went for a stroll through downtown and Iām surprised I hadnāt seen the pokestop before
So Iāve been working on my photography skills and I still feel like a noob. I bought a basic DSLR a few months ago and Iām having lots of fun with it though :]
My first outing trying to develop some photography skills. I took these on the fourth of july on top of the Anaheim convention center parking structure only because my date arrived late and we couldnāt make it to the downtown Disney area in time....
Shot some new pics for my social media
Took a screencap of air mail from Heart Gold so that I can start printing these off and have higher resolution images available. Google doesnāt come up with the best high res images probably for that reason of people ripping off the design.
Games I want to play
Quantum Break
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Games I donāt have the funds/consoles to play:
