Lakagígar (the Laki Craters) - Iceland 2026
my instagram
Standing among the moss-covered craters of Lakagígar for the first time, it's hard to grasp the scale of this place. Shaped by unimaginable forces, the row of craters stretches for 27 km across the southern part of Highlands.
More than 130 craters rise from the black terrain, creating a surreal contrast between violence and tranquility. It's difficult to believe that this scenery was created by the devastating Skaftáreldar eruption of 1783–1784, one of the largest and destructive volcanic events in recorded history.
Today, Lakagígar remains remarkably untouched. Rolling craters, black lava fields, and endless horizons offer tons of compositions, while the landscape tells a powerful story. Here every frame captures a small piece of Earth's extraordinary geological history.
Lakagígar is accessible by a rugged road and only in summer, with many rivers to cross and, therefore, fit for a proper 4 wheel drive vehicle.
Sunlit - Iceland 2026

The Icelandic Highlands left a lasting impression on me with their remarkably diverse landscapes. In some places, the terrain resembles the surface of the Moon, with vast stretches of black volcanic sand and craters. In others, a thick carpet of moss transforms the landscape into vibrant shades of green.
One feeling remains constant: the sensation of being completely alone on another planet. Few people venture into this harsh and remote wilderness. There are no towns, villages, or houses, and the Highlands are only accessible between mid-June and early September.
Looking closely, the seemingly barren black sand reveals delicate life. Tiny purple, white, and pink flowers emerge from the volcanic soil, adding unexpected colour to an otherwise stark landscape.
What impressed me most, however, was the extraordinary palette of the mountains and craters. Rich reds, warm yellows, vivid greens, and deep blues blend together in countless shades, creating a scenery so colourful that it feels almost surreal.
