Bio:
The future wasn’t something Carmen thought of often, not when every day felt like it was merely about survival. She could easily recall the strange men her mother brought home, the loneliness she felt when she was left alone, and the hunger she felt for some days. It was all too much to think about. By the time Carmen was seven years old, she and her four year old half brother were taken in by their aunt and uncle, and moved to Aurora Bay, California. It was a big change for both the kids and the adults, but they managed. Life was looking up for the Jiménez kids for the first time.
Carmen remembered the first time her Aunt took her to Cooldown ice rink. It was during the first Christmas celebration that Carmen went to in town, the rink was open for patrons to ice skate to Christmas music and have fun. It was there that Carmen fell completely in love with ice skating, and she had so much fun that when they got home that night, Micaela showed her niece a few figure skating videos. Carmen was signed up for figure skating by the end of the week and it became her whole life.
Figure skating was on Carmen’s mind constantly. She spent hours at Cooldown, she came home and practiced on her skating tiles, and she fell asleep dreaming of the ice. Carmen skated in short programs and competitions, won ribbons and medals, and upon realizing just how serious and talented their niece was, Micaela started working from home, Carmen was taken out of school to be homeschooled, and everyone’s lives began to revolve around Carmen’s figure skating. The sport was so freeing to Carmen, allowing her to put all her energy into something, and she no longer felt like she was merely surviving, she was alive on the ice.
By the time Carmen was seventeen she began skating in pairs with her boyfriend. But as the Olympics became more and more of a possibility, the two began to grow apart. He blamed Carmen for imperfections in their routine, letting the stress get to him. The two made it to the Olympics but they scored too low, and he broke up with her and found a different partner.
Heartbroken but confident she could be even greater, Carmen began her journey as a solo skater once more and she began trying to master her jumps. A few years later, she met Nico and the two started dating, but it didn’t take long for the two of them to decide their dreams of going to the Olympics was too great for them to continue trying to make things work, so they ended on good terms. Carmen made it to the Olympics once more but she scored too low to win again.
Carmen was yet again determined to be even better, but after suffering an injury, she knew her dreams of making it to the Olympics a third time either wasn’t going to happen or she certainly wouldn’t score high enough for a medal. She was right.
After her aunt and uncle received custody of Carmen’s younger half siblings, it was all hands on deck to help out. Carmen already knew she wouldn’t make it back to the Olympics, so she became a coach at Cooldown ice rink and helped her aunt and uncle at home.
