What is Spec Work? (by TopicSimple)
On 7 February this year, Giles Duley, an independent 39-year-old British photographer, was blown up by a landmine in Afghanistan. He became a triple amputee, losing his left arm and both legs. His life is a miracle – most soldiers with similar injuries do not survive. It is his suggestion that we meet at London's Charing Cross hospital, where he is recovering from an operation to ease ossification of muscle at the end of one of his leg stumps.

Today would have been the 57th birthday of Apple co-founder and visionary Steve Jobs, who died on Oct. 5, 2011, after a long battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Social media users have been extremely active in wishing the late media mogul a happy birthday, and "Happy Birthday Ste...

Matchpoint morphing into an effective tool that will save lives
I am honored my project matchpoint was chosen as one of the winner ideas for OpenIDEO’s challenge “How might we increase the number of registered bone marrow donors to help save more lives?”
The most rewarding aspect of this process is to see 100k Cheeks, a student organization from Stanford University implement these ideas into a fully developed tool to reach out to everyone interested in being part of a helpful community ready to participate in saving lives by swabbing their cheeks and registering as bone marrow donors.

Revolucion Sin Muertos ll Revolution Without Death
I always want to find that place where media can educate and influence public perception of alternative realities and social issues; I believe Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi achieves this with every one of his projects. His documentaries are so creatively crafted you learn so much about how there is a palpitating hip-hop movement in sub-cultures trying to represent their experience through this art form.
Revolución Sin Muertos ll Revolution Without Death from MVMT on Vimeo.
In his latest venture Eli is partnering with Andres Celin to narrate “Revolucion sin Muertos (Revolution without Death) in Medellin Colombia for the youth that are surrounded by violence who have chosen to use hip-hop to draw a peace movement and create a real alternative to the cycle of violence they have been experiencing for generations.”—From the words of Eli to describe this project.
If you follow my notes, pleas help these filmmakers bring this story to the world. Help them reach the funding necessary to make this documentary.
Latest update: (6/13/11)
Looking forward to watching this entire documentary broken into several episodes by region:
Cuba
Mexico & Peru
Haiti & Dominican Republic
Brazil
I'm really glad to see this distinctively different experience documented and presented as the rich culture it is.

Douglas Rushkoff loves me (totalmente) ♥
Sometimes deep inspiration comes from the feeling of being supported and cared for. Today I received a signed book by an incredibly intelligent author, teacher and documentarian worthy of my sincere admiration, Douglas Rushkoff.
My dear friend Giana sent me his latest book Life Inc. I am eternally grateful for her thoughtfulness and affection. I would like to think I’ve earned this surprise by cultivating a meaningful friendship but inside I know this gift ended up at my doorstep due to her enormous generous heart ♥.
A thoughtful surprise can really touch a person’s heart and cheer one up despite any strains of life. I am anxious to savor and devour my new book. Feeling loved…

Graffiti for a cause
I am fortunate to own a letterpress poster of TEMPT1′s signature graffiti tags by artist and close friend Arianna Orland.
One of the most respectful and admirable art+technology projects I’ve come across in years. “The Free Art and Technology Lab developed EyeWriter system an open source software project that allows artist TEMPT1 (who suffers from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) to make art again by using his eyes for the first time in seven years.”
“An initial milestone in the project was to see TEMPT1 write his name again. Through Kickstarter a group of engineers, a artists and developers are helping push a second milestone, which is TEMPT1′s return to being able to make a living as an artist. As a part of this initiative he is releasing new archival digital prints, an original type face drawn using the EyeWriter, a screen saver, T-shirts, letter press prints, a special xerox zine about his work and message, and large format robotically drawn eye tags.”
Arianna participated in this effort by printing limited edition letterpress prints of original designs by TEMPT1. Beautiful work Arianna!

I am enamored with the video work of Diego Levy. I found him by chance browsing through Indexhibit template users. I don’t know a lot about him, but his work speaks for itself. He chooses very personal interesting stories and illustrates them with minimalistic beautiful imagery that communicate stronger than the melodic voices he chooses for his narratives.
Matchpoint
Ten days ago I proposed my first openIDEO concept: Matchpoint, a Mobile Application to help groups and businesses organize bone marrow registry drives. A fast, accessible, one touch to join application that connects users to existing bone marrow drives and gives them the opportunity to organize a drive and invite others to join.
OpenIDEO is a global community that draws inspiration, ideas and opinions from participants to solve problems together for the collective social good. They partnered up with the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University to explore new ideas for encouraging bone marrow donation worldwide. Together they asked the community of participants to post ideas on how to expand the global network of potential bone marrow donors and support people who are battling leukemia and other blood cancers.
My boyfriend had a Bone Marrow Transplant in November 2010. It has been a very difficult and empowering journey for both of us and finding a match was among our most difficult challenges. His co-workers got together and organizeda bone marrow drive in his office where close to 100 people attended. Seeing them support him and encourage other office mates to participate and register inspired me to submit this idea. I want to mimic what already happens organically among support groups and family members and provide an organizing tool that makes this process simpler, faster and easier to share with other potential donors.
This is a cause very close to my heart as the medical option of a stem cell transplant has changed the course of my life forever. I really want to see this challenge extend the possibility for a real cure for 100K ++++ cancer patients.
I’m extremely proud and honored Matchpoint made it to the top 25 concepts that are being evaluated by the openIDEO contribution community, so stay put to find out the winning concept on April 18.
