Process #week 10

Still, in the studio we are keep looking for teams might need help. April gave us some suggestion, should we walk to the teams and understand what steps they are at, then it can be easier to know what we can do. Then we went to alumni count yard for Andrew’s team, counting how many furniture. Therefore, they could know how many option they have, then decide the way display different hight chairs, tables and beam bags.

Process #week 8

Our team is like a craft making or we can say: A helping team. In week 8 while other teams are mapping their ideas, we are now creating flyer which telling classmate what we can do for them. (I was really surprised that Renae draw such a beautiful and colourful poster!!) On the other hand, we decided to build our email account,so that we could sent important message replace Facebook group talk (easily to forget).

Nearly class end, Charlotte and Renae were looking for other groups who have similar ideas with us, than we found out Amarat’s group is planning for furniture too. Therefore, in Tuesday class I have talked to Amarat and drew their ideas sharing to our team.

Futures Reflection #week 9

The studio, Futures, is an introduction to the field of creative design. This project includes challenging traditional design practices to unearth new approaches, art direction to support storytelling and narrative structure, and methods of collaboration and the sharing of content creation.

In the first session, I have been paired up with another classmate-- Eris. We have a 40 mins conversation of the favourite song. I noted some of her conversation narrative such as personality word, character tone, body language and record the place/ time/ situation she heard the song.

After that, I started to do the mind map and thinking some ideas. It came out five elements: signage, colour for love, mountain, human climbing and words.

My specific insight from this studio is that I can do the design by using interviewee personal experience and make connection with the prompt. For me, this is important in this studio because we need to be flexable in this society. During the mapping and making steps, I realised how important is to really understand what employer want and need. By building skills in interviewing each other, keep breaking down some ideas, this effect me to think more and be more patient on every project.

On the other hand, the limited prompt telling the way I should go, but in somehow, it kept me consider about should I disrupt the prompt, use in new, or design in a common way? Last my decision is: Design a big contrast! Make it attractive! As I finished everything, I began to see what a soft interview could be so much powerful. I think the studio has challenged me a lot at the creative part, for a designer, we need and must be creative. Another things is how can we keep the balance between requirement and audience.

Food presentation #week 6

Group member: Charlotte, Eris, Evangeline, Meka, Miranda and Renae.

In week four we are doing food presentation about the locate. I think our group work well together although sometimes we are quite. When we were choosing four area: locate, communication, activate and document, we had a short discuss about some people are not interesting in activate and document area, so we pick locate at the end. And I really admire that Renae done a great beautiful mind map and alway asking question for our team.

We then focus on two parts: furniture and decorate. I got some ideas about the desk, the only material can be “pallet”. Because it is environmental, re-use and easy to get. The pallet is not so big, and the shape are square in usual, therefore people can talk with each other in a comfortable distant. The second reason I love pallet so much is, it’s easy to adjust the hight. Last, we can decorate the wooden pallet become a big welcome sign, so they seems like a set. I also have some ideas about sunshade, the material can be fabric or bed sheet. This idea reach the value of environmental and also I feel like the material can make student feels relax and as comfortable as home. We are considered about the time we hold the event. The weather might be hot if we plan holding event outdoor. If is in indoor, the beautiful fabric could be a great decoration too.

In the end I was surprising that our group have so many great ideas. I think we could work well in the following 6 weeks.

Make a salad

In the afternoon class, Andy show us the video “Make a salad” by Alison Knowles, who is one of the original Fluxus artists. “Make a Salad” was first performed at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts in 1962, where Knowles managed to transform an everyday task—making a salad—into a ritual worth contemplation. In the video we can hear she is cutting vegetables and then threw them into a pile. Five minutes passed, while the scene move down on to the ground, we finally see a surprising result. In the end, the rather mundane green salad was served to the audience.

For this, a activity that suit for everyone, and could be such playful. Alison Knowles’ idea is that our daily activities, our relationships, and what we do alone—in the kitchen, the hallway, alone at the computer, in the bedroom—should be considered as part of our expression.

Wheatfield

C A S E S T U D I E S - W E E K F I V E

The Wheatfield project was a stark visual contradiction: a beautiful golden field of wheat set among the cool steel skyscrapers of downtown Manhattan. Denes believes her "decision to plant a wheatfield in Manhattan, instead of designing just another public sculpture, grew out of a long-standing concern and need to call attention to our misplaced priorities and deteriorating human values." (Oakes 1995)

By creating an art work with wheat, a grain planted throughout the world, Denes also called attention to hunger and the mismanagement of resources. Wheat was transformed into a symbol, as the artist's work highlighted incongruities.

It was amazing that she done a daunting task, and this make people think more between art and ecology.

Fallen Fruit

Fallen Fruit is an art collaboration originally conceived in 2004 by David Burns, Matias Viegener and Austin Young. Fallen Fruit began by mapping fruit trees growing on or over public property in Los Angeles. The collaboration has expanded to include serialized public projects and site-specific installations and happenings in various cities around the world.

“Fruit is a symbol of goodness and generosity in almost all cultures in the world”, which mention in Fallen Fruit 2004. Therefore, we can see the team working with fruit as a material or media, doing visual work includes photographs, wallpapers, everyday objects and some great video works that explore the social and political implications of our relationship to fruit.

Instant Coffee

C A S E S T U D I E S - W E E K F O U R

Instant Coffee is a service oriented artist collective based in Toronto and Vancouver. They are talented in using bright colour poster to create a space which is attraction to people pass by. The team use simple instant coffee but create a different feeling environments that give people an unforgettable memory. Art can be build by some simple ideas, however people can not deny it could have such a strong power.

Instant Coffee work as collaboratively

The team want more than they can give, they organise ideas from different artists. In addition, all of them have been influenced by the collective history of art marketing in Canada. Therefore, the team still do individual artistic practices. They have art, curatorial, publishing, or design practices parallel to hold the event.

Souper Kitchen #week 2

Have a totally different lecture experience this Friday! From the second communication design lecture, we started to do something different but meaningful things. And for this time, Andy has show us a great example, having a cup of warm pumpkin soup and spent time chatting friends. People who came here (want to be together), is because they see the value, said Andy. While Andy said how he cut the pumpkin by himself in a terrible night but result in a great soup, a started to think how large the power can be, for 102 students want to reach the same aim.

In the one hour team talk, I started to understand that we are not only solving practical problem, we need to be more independent, sharing ideas with groups and working with others. But how to stay individual but work with group? We born in different background, culture and religion, so it might be a good idea to know each other deeper and increase the trust. When comes a huge project, it seems working with 102 students is not as hard as the beginning.

Meet in a Nice Restaurant #week 2

I’m so interesting in the second case study-- meet in a nice restaurant, which is an unofficial event taking place in always a different place and it is about meeting people in a nice restaurant. Nikola Tosic is willing everyone to join, no matter you are an artist, designer, writer, businessman, dreamer or even no job.

Nikola have organise the event 12 times during 16 years. And I think the reasons why he keep holding this kind of event are he can easily meet new friends, share stories without pressure. And somehow it is interesting to know someone who grow in a different background.

Therefore, Andy and April gave us a mission, is to meet in a nice restaurant with our group member: Charlotte, Eris, Evangeline, Miranda and Renae. Is that really a homework? Such a GREAT HW! In the beginning Charlotte has come up with a excellent place-- Thornbury, is Melbourne’s first permanent Bar and Food Truck Stop.

Licensed for over 700 people, Thornbury is an icon of the area, functioning as a car manufacturing factory for much of the 20th century, and now as the second largest beer garden and only permanent bar and food truck stop in Melbourne.

So... can’t wait to go there wiz our group tonight!

Rules for soup kitchen #week 2

Andy and April had mention that they will prepare some soup for communication study students at friday lecture. And now it’s time for students list some rules which 102 people can have a cup of soup at the same time.

I feel like this project may be a big challenge for me in first workshop, and I even don’t know the creative person will give me response or not. However, Andy had mention an important thing, what is creative person...? They can be a dreamer, musician, designer, artist, architect, photographer or any person who is full of unique originalities and ideas. It rewrite the definition of “create person ” in my brain.

After Robert told me he is willing to do interview with me, I started to research him in deeper then plan eight questions for him. I though that is a great way to let someone have choice. On the other hand, he can give me a better reply if that question he is interesting in.

Another challenge comes out after doing the interview: how to present such a GREAT interview? But I need to say, I love this challenge. During this step, I did three plans then breakup, and finally comes to the answer. I created a modern newspaper style with clean layout and print in Bulky News, I believe this represents Robert’s personality and his photos.

Days after, Bronwyn had a long communication with me in workshop, I really thanks to her that give me so many feedbacks. And I started to decide scrupulous on choosing a suitable typeface. To use three cute figures showing Robert’s occupation next to page number is my another change. Although these are small things, they make me closer to the photographer Robert.

I think I have a big improve after this project. Doing a long time management, researching, planning, designing. And to understand how to layout in Indesign, print in selected paper texture and size. In the end, I am appreciate what I learnt during ask me anything project and the final present.

Last, I’m still keep in touch with Robert. And I plan to give him one copy of the final present newspaper for him. Can’t wait to know more about his excellent ideas and stories.

After brainstorming, I selected newspaper style to display the interview of Robert. In addition I done some rough sketches of layout ideas and started to design in illustrator. I spoke to Bronwyn in the studio and she gave me some great ideas such as creating three character that present Rober’s three occupations-- Architect, soldier and photographer. And to look how excellent architecture book layout by modern building shape or the space between each other. Thirdly, because Robert is a special or we can say he is a novel designer, Bronwyn also gave me some suggestion to my old style typography.

Week 10 / Tumblr Reflection

While I heard “Tumblr” in the beginning of Communication design studio, I even can’t spell the right word (ha ha..). That was a huge surprise! Please don’t kidding… Seriously? Should we write design journal during this ten weeks? These are what I thought at first.

It is still a challenge for me to share the design works, ideas, thinking and using English typing on this network platform. However, I gained lots of great experiences by recording these things. Being a user of Tumblr, I learn from classmates, the wild Tumblr community, and myself. When I through back to my previous journal, are they well planning? Should I add more thoughts? Where I can do better now? I often reflect myself. And suddenly I realized it have recorded my progress every day, every week. And I cannot deny that it is a great chance to share different ideas and discussing with classmates. Sometimes I felt surprised, why did I never think of this before…? Then I started to decide stayed in front of the laptop, to search and tried to organize a set of things. At the time I am boring, I could search with terms related to my design in this wild community. An easy and good way to catch idea!

Another good thing that Tumblr brings to me is it often pulls me up from the lazy turbid thought in the early Monday morning. At first, I forced myself to write something, but after weeks, typing design journal have become my interest.

:What will you do if there is lack of design resources?

The essence of Design is solving problems, and giving the proper programs to users. More deficient the resources are, more obvious the answers would occur. There is no problem of lack of resources when designer is so clear with the innate character of problem; on the other hand, anything could be resources.

設計的本質就是解決問題，並提出適合的方案。當設計的資源越是貧乏之時，往往設計的答案也就越明朗，往往看清楚問題的本身，就會發現根本沒有資源缺乏這件事，因為設計者的想法一轉，資源俯拾皆是。

Robert have already gave me the answer of interview questions. And I really want to share one of his responses which seems very helpful for young designer. I love the way he think about solving problem!

The Art Critic-- Raoul Hausmann

While I was researched M/M paris, I found some fascinating collage works by Raoul Hausmann. He was an Austrian artist and writer. Hausmann’s artwork is full of criticise, dissatisfy and satirise; to tell a long story by cutting anonymous figures. Raoul Hausmann was a founder member of the Berlin Dada group, developed photomontage as a tool of satire and political protest (he abandoned painting in 1923 and centred his work on photography).

The collage above is designed by Raoul Hausmann, which called “Tatlin lebt zu hause” and the one on the right is created by his wife-- Hannah Hoch, named “Grotedque”.
