I left my country in Feb 2021 because of sexual orientation after being assaulted I tried my best to escape and I ended up in Kenya(kakuma refugee camp) I faced a lot of horrible situation,a lot of homophobia from refugees and host community,I had no where to sleep every day was the a fight for survival since I used to get little food monthly from UN but that food was taking me only for one week.Every day people where dieing of insecurities and diseases, the health standards were very poor. In June 2022 I was assaulted by homophobes and I nearly survived death. I managed to escape and went to the nearest police,the group of people who assaulted me hunted me for revenge because some of them where arrested.To save my life I had to get out kakuma refugee camp and I had to hide my self in lodwar(place near kakuma refugee camp)I stayed there for a long period but life was more challenging. In August 2024 I came to south sudan in Gorom refugee camp that where I am now.The situation here is not much different from Kakuma refugee camp some days I sleep hungry due to food shortage and my shelter is leaking. That's the short about me

I know others were not as lucky. In the camp, some LGBTQ+ people lost their lives to hate and violence.

It is 42C+ here every day. Our plastic shelters are ovens.

No shade. No fans. Water queues in the sun.

Sick, dehydrated, and food spoiling fast.

LGBTIQ refugees are suffering most because we are inside, hiding.

We need tarps, water support, and rehydration salts NOW.

In wartime Berlin, a young gay Jewish man put on a fascist youth uniform and walked into a deportation center to try to save the man he loved.

Gad Beck was barely out of his teens when his boyfriend, Manfred Lewin, was seized along with his family. Beck borrowed a uniform, marched in, and told the officials he needed Manfred released for a construction job. Astonishingly, it worked. They handed Manfred over.

But once they were outside, Manfred would not run. He told Beck he could not abandon his family to save himself, and he turned around and walked back in. Beck never saw him again.

Manfred and his family were murdered at Auschwitz. Beck survived the war, became a teacher in postwar Berlin, and lived to 88 - by then the last known gay Jewish survivor of the Holocaust.

In Gorom, being queer is already dangerous.

When your shelter looks like this, you’re exposed 24/7.

To rain. To heat. To the people who want to hurt you.

Ohh thanks for your attention, currently I'm not in a good situation in terms of what to eat and a my shelter is not in a good condition.Somecdays I sleep hungry and my body is getting weaker everyday.

For 40 years, the most feared military unit in Greece was 300 men who loved each other. Then the man who destroyed them stood over their bodies and wept.

The Sacred Band of Thebes was founded around 378 BCE on a straightforward premise. Soldiers fighting beside their lovers are more courageous than soldiers fighting for abstract loyalty. So the Theban general Epaminondas built his elite force out of 150 male couples and put them at the front of every major engagement. They defeated Sparta at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BCE, ending Spartan military dominance of Greece. They won battle after battle for four decades. No unit in Greece could break them.

At Chaeronea in 338 BCE, surrounded and unwilling to surrender, the Sacred Band fought to the last man. They were cut down by the Macedonians. The entire Sacred Band was killed where they stood. Archaeologists later discovered 254 skeletons under the battlefield, believed to be their remains. A stone lion still marks the site today.

When Philip surveyed the dead and found the 300 bodies of the Sacred Band lying where they fell, each killed facing the enemy, he reportedly wept and said: "Perish any man who suspects that these men either did or suffered anything that was base."

Philip said that. His son Alexander, who had led the cavalry charge that destroyed them, stood on the same field. Two of the most celebrated military commanders in history looked at 300 dead gay men and called them heroes.

The Sacred Band never reformed. Their reign as the most formidable fighting force in Europe ended at Chaeronea. The lion monument that the Thebans erected over their grave still stands. Underneath it, the skeletons of 150 pairs of lovers remain buried together, which is exactly how they died.

Centuries later, armies across the Western world would spend enormous energy debating whether gay men were fit to serve. The Sacred Band settled that question in 378 BCE. It took the greatest military force in the ancient world to prove them wrong, and even then, Philip couldn't do it without crying.

Being transgender means my gender doesn’t match what people assumed when I was born. That truth cost me my home in Uganda in 2021. Homophobes made sure of it. I thought Kakuma refugee camp would be safer. It wasn’t.

In Gorom now, I’m still fighting for a place where I can exist without fear.My sexual orientation is part of me too — but first, I just want the right to live.

To other trans refugees: I see you. We deserve more than survival.
