Paint felt a surge of grateful joy rush through her, as he repeated the phrase from her ridiculous fantasy almost word for word. ‘Don’t know what I’d do without you.’ Wanted. Needed. Heck, she immediately felt the strong impulse to hug the guy, but well…she was still a bit cautious about pushing her boundaries. That and his ribs were still healing. Best to save the hugs for later.
She was even being invited to sit with him and watch human television! A friend activity for sure! An activity for friends! She hesitated just a moment though, freezing up. Could she really afford to do any more slacking off?

She shook it off. That humiliation was past. It was nothing but fuel for her success now. One day she’d eat her bitter words. Paint swore it before the Speaker.

"Of course," Jake beamed, still oblivious as all hell to the negativity in her head. What could possibly be wrong. "You're already fed half the mansion! I bet Stitch would love to hear that, the poor old sap cooks for us so often. Ah, I should really talk to him about getting you a proper uniform," he added through a mouthful of food, licking syrup off his fork. "Something sharp and a little more verdant, you know? Heh."
He pointed at the screen with his fork. "You see the lovely dame there with the long black hair? That's Xena. And may I say, what a dame, haha." He grinned wide, teasing, bright green eyes dancing behind his glasses. "Come on and keep me company, it's dreadfully lonely up here. If anyone has a sharp word to say about it I'll send them for a round." Pause. His smile flickered. "No one's been giving you a hard time, I hope...? You seem a smidge on edge, Ms P."

"Heehee…n-no thanks needed…"
She’d scurry in with a bright smile, plopping the tray down in Jake’s lap carefully. It really did seem like her stiffness and formality was easing slightly, though only slightly. Even so, her fear of making a misstep showed, beginning to border on paranoia.
From beratings, to dark insinuations to what she really ought to be used for (emphasis on the ‘used’) she’d seen and heard enough to make her a bit…jumpy.
"F-Frankly I don’t mind at all. It’s important to make sure you’re well fed! So that you can get well soon!"
She nodded with serious emphasis, before scratching her neck sheepishly and looking away.
"…and…a-and well to be honest, i-it’s a plus that you’re so nice, and not scary and you don’t dislike me yet…"
Stuttering...? What was she so nervous about? Jake pretty much felt like the least threatening lump of angsty pain-plagued nerd right now, so it was strange to get that unmistakable air of nerves that usually only followed the city officials he spoke to when he was representing the fmaily. Not... here. Or now.
Hmm. That was troubling. What had the family been treating her like...? He might have to stir a fuss about it. Bring it up with his Father?
"I can't imagine why in blazes I would dislike you," he said with wide eyes, bordering on a laugh. "I mean, holy toledo, all you've done so far is bring me food and try to make me feel better! I think the Handmaid brought me a glass of iced tea once of her own volition. That was nice."
He very gratefully took a bite of his very late breakfast, beaming up at her. "Honestly, I already don't know what I'd do without you! I was expecting the next few weeks to be nothing but sore punishment but you're making being grounded more than bearable, my dear. Ah, 'props', as I've heard some people say online. Or in my own antiquitous colloquialism, very good show. Haha." He flicked his head toward the spare seat on the couch. "Want to stay a while? I'm watching Xena the Warrior Princess."

Ms. Paint is indeed up there surprisingly fast with a generous heaping helping of pancakes in a variety of flavors. It worried and disappointed her of course that Die had declined her offer of having some, but getting to bring some to Jake lifted her spirits again. He seemed like a swell guy, and it made her feel good to get to brighten his day a bit considering the fact that the poor guy was still in quite the state.
Plus it helped get her mind off of Calliope declaring her stupid, useless, and inconsiderate. If she could do something useful like this…even if it was small, a thousand mile journey began with a single step.
I can change their minds if I keep at it.
In a few years…maybe sooner, if she worked hard enough! People would smile at her. Think of her and say to themselves…’Where would we be without her?’. She’d have a family again. A world again. A place where she was wanted. Needed. And no Slayer would ever take it from her ever again.
She’d knock on Jake’s door politely, forcing herself from her determined inner mantras, and preparing a smile.
"Hello, it’s me, Mr. Jake! I brought your pancakes. May I enter?"
If Jake had known what his sister had said to their newest member, he probably would have sent her for quite the round, his physical ailing aside. But, as things stood, he was oblivious as usual, and was absorbed in yet another completely illegal film bootleg while nestled on his couch, nursing a bottle of cider.
He craned his head back over the couch, sighing happily. Seriously, she was rapidly becoming his new favourite. Imagine having someone who really looked after him when he wasn't feeling well! Was this what it felt like to have a mother...? It was nice...
"Come right in, Ms. P," he called, trying to slowly sit up to allow for a plate in his lap when it came. "And thanks again, by golly."
