How to Create a bootable Ubuntu CD using a MAC

If you need to burn  an Ubuntu CD/DVD to install on a machine from Disk, then follow this process 1) go to the ubuntu download site http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download   get the latest version, hit download Note: To burn most ISOs, you can use Apple's Disk Utility (Disk Copy in older versions).

Launch Disk Utility (Applications ? Utilities ? Disk Utility).

Insert your blank CD/DVD.

Drag and drop your .iso file to the left pane in Disk Utility. Now both the blank disc and the .iso should be listed.

Select the .iso file, and click on the 'Burn' button in the toolbar.

Ensure that the 'Verify burned data' checkbox is ticked (you may need to click on the disclosure triangle to see the checkbox).

Click 'Burn'. The data will be burned and verified.

This is the process i am using to create a disk to setup the base install for a virtual bridges VDI environment.

How To Increase Disk Space on a Xen Server VM

I know this is a simple task, but to just give a few easy pointers for those who can't see it.

With XenCenter 5.6 you can select the VDI from the storage tab of the virtual machine click Properties, select Size and Location, then increase the size of the disk without using the command line.

Using Disk Management:

Right click My Computer select Manage.

Select Disk Management, right click on the disk you want to extend, and select Extend:

This starts the Extend Volume Wizard. Follow the prompts to complete the process.

iPhone 5 and iOS 5 release date hints due to staff vacations

It looks almost certain now that we are tantalizingly close to the release of the next iPhone, and the next version of Apple’s operating system. We now have reports of iPhone 5 and iOS 5 releases date hints due to staff vacations being blocked by Apple. There are now claims that Apple has begun refusing requests for employee vacations, and according to AppleInsider this is during the second week in October. This could mean the company is getting ready for a huge increase in customers at its stores due to the availability of the new iPhone, and the updated operating system. The dates that Apple are claimed to be blocking are from October the 9th until the 12th, and October 14th and 15th. The first dates could coincide with the release of iOS 5 that is expected to be on October 10th, and the AppleCare arm have been pre-warned to expect an increase in customer calls on the day. Social network Twitter has scheduled some developer events for October 10th and 12th that is focused on the integration with iOS 5, which further suggests the new OS will be available to the public by then. It is nothing unusual for Apple to release a new version of the OS just ahead of the next iPhone. Last year the company launched iOS 4 three days prior to the iPhone 4. Regarding the second set of dates, these could indicate the new iPhone being made available to consumers, and we have already brought you the news that Apple could be holding a press eventfor the iPhone 5 on October 4th. In just over a week we will hopefully know when the new iPhone will be coming to the market, and then consumers can decide if it is the handset for them. There have been many of our readers saying they are waiting to see what the iPhone 5 is like before making the decision to buy. Unlike other iPhone launches there is much more competition with many worthy Android handsets now available. Will you see what the specifications are of the iPhone 5 before deciding which new handset to get?

Mac/Bootcamp – no system disk – replace and press any key

If you have ever received this message, after probably being drained with panic thinking you have lost everything I had this issue after trying to install Bootcamp, silly me should have just stuck to VMWare Fusion like normal people. Anyway, most people say hold the option key, but you may find that that doesn’t work because you have not even got as far as the post beeps (C major chord for all you geeks) Anyway what you need to do, is if you have disk stuck in you can eject this by holding down the mouse button and restarting after 10-20 seconds it will eject, job 1 done. Next you need to reset the PRAM settings, which is done by holding down a 4 key combination: Cmd (ALT) + Option key + P + R this will then post with the C Major chord and then you can let go and it will boot into MAC OSX, then once in just double check that the Mac is your main start up disk to stop this happening again   that is in setting > startup disk not that it matters but i did all this on a Macbook Pro running OSX Lion (issue came after trying to install BootCamp) Hope this helps, thanks for reading

Buffalo Linkstation LS-GL HDD Replace

If you have also had issues with your Linkstation LS-GL keeps turning off, here is a brief fix for it. Error Codes: LED Flash Codes: 3 flashes – Partition problem with hard drive. Reformat the hard drive. 4 flashes – Fan problem. 5 flashes – ROM problem. 6 flashes – Hard Drive can not be recognized. 7 flashes – Problem with motherboard (RAM, LAN, or Hard Drive controller). mine was showing as 4 flashes – Fan problem. but the fan after testing was fine. so i followed this procedure using a TFTP update then a firware refresh. this enabled me to build a new NAS drive without access to the old one. So i upgraded my 250Gb drive to a 1TB drive A TFTP boot requires a little bit of finesse and a tiny bit of luck.  9 times out of 10 when a NAS constantly says “System Now Booting”, E04 (or 4 DIAG light flashes depending on the NAS) or doesn’t show up on the NAS Navigator after a long period of time after an EM boot attempt, then chances are that you need to perform this method.  So, without further delay let’s get to it. What you’ll need: -  The NAS Navigator client -  Your NAS model’s latest firmware I used a download from the buffalo site version 1.15 (8mg download) -  Your NAS model’s TFTP boot image which you can find here ftp://24.153.165.234/array1/share/nas-recovery/ or a direct link for LS-GL ftp://24.153.165.234/array1/share/nas-recovery/TFTP%20Boot%20Recovery%20LS-GL%201.11.exe ***(NOTE: Some older NAS models may not have a TFTP solution available, if you cannot find your model in the listing please DO NOT attempt to use the TFTP program of another model.)*** Make sure your firewall/anti-virus software is disabled. Performing the TFTP boot: 1.        Directly connect your NAS to your computer via an Ethernet cable (crossover isn’t necessary). 2.        Set your computer’s NIC (Network Interface Card) to a static IP address of 192.168.11.1 3.       Run the TFTP program for your respective NAS and have the files extracted to your desktop 4.       Boot the device using the EM walkthrough steps. (Whilst NAS is off, hold reset button in on back, and turn on, it plays some silly tune, then your in) 5.       Open the TFTP folder and run the program TFTP Boot.exe with the icon: 6.       A command prompt similar to the one shown below should appear: 7.       When the NAS boots up it will make a request to the IP address 192.168.11.1 (which is what your computer should be set at) and the terminal should look something like this: 8.       If it doesn’t show the blocks served, try the process again. Some user have reported that after the device shows the error, holding the function button down for 5 seconds can provoke the TFTP requests. After you see blocks of data being served the NAS typically boots to Emergency Mode at which point you can perform a firmware update. All you need to do from here is run the LSUPDATER.exe After that has finished jobs done. You should now have a fully working NAS drive with the std shares setup ie \\LS-GL347\share defualt username: admin        password: password Hope this helps, many thanks

Education Authority iPad Project

A local technology college, that had a vision of being the leaders in the education space, for innovative technology, got part way through a project to deliver IPads to all pupils and staff, to provide a more flexible learning environment, but they just had one last challenge before this project could go live, it was around the application delivery and data security. We worked with them on this to solve the problem through innovation. This was done by implementing a virtual application delivery mechanism, which as well as delivering the applications in a secure method, also integrated a SAN storage option. So at all times the applications and data are available through any browser including the IPad Safari browser, then seamlessly delivers as an icon to the desktop. With a built in backup facility if anyone forgot there device, they still have the option to connect in from one of the terminals in the school, with internet access. This has all been accomplished by using Install Free's HTML Gateway
