Not like I know much more than a freeway sign with the name on it but at least I’ve seen it. Lots of towns in Washington and Oregon like that. Did you head up there for school? And you said you’re twenty-four? You were here for five years? Six? Before you… this? Olivia, Zach and a girl named Maggie who is most likely a vampire named Laure who was having a little fun with me.
[Taylor’s eyes slowly went from her eyes to the delicate white of fangs as she smiled at him. The entire picture was disconcerting in the extreme but also not all together horrifying. Suddenly Taylor wondered if there really was something wrong with him. If he should be screaming or begging or crying? Maybe it was just the blissful numbness of shock that kept him quiet and intent on Carter’s face. Or a life lived continuously disconnected that kept him outwardly calm even while his heart beat sped up. He glanced down at her hand, half expecting claws or talons but the hand was small, slim fingered, the hand of a twenty-four year old woman. He stared at it blankly for a few beats before he remembered what they were doing. He took a step forward and reached out to touch her wrist with his fingers. As his fingers came in contact with her he realized no one had touched him since he’d woken up in his cell. His fingers were cold but her skin was colder, something else that made him start, muscles tensing at the surprise. He looked back up at Carter’s face, his mind still working, trying to understand what this all really meant. Vampires, werewolves and now him, Taylor Fordham, had somehow ended up in this world. He looked down at their hands again and slowly turned his over, palm up so his wrist was resting in her hand. He licked his dry lips.]
That's true. I've lost count of how many random museums I've seen over the years. Yeah, Portland for school and then I got snatched when I was twenty. Been here for about four years now. He reached out to touch her, as though she might suddenly disappear or shatter, a figment of his imagination, but his fingers were warm on her icy skin. She watched as the gears spun in his head, trying to make sense of the way that his entire worldview must have gotten tipped on its side. She remembered that feeling. Once his wrist was in her hand, she lifted it gently, slowly, and with a loose enough grip that he could pull away if he wanted to.] Slight pinch. [The warning was soft and just before her fangs pierced his skin. His blood was sweet on her tongue, and she took several deep mouthfuls before pulling away, keeping her promise of not taking too much. She licked the blood from her lips and her eyes went back to green, and her fangs receded into her gums.] So, what'd you think?

[Taylor balked when her eyes changed, being taken completely by surprise. It would be stupid to say he’d never seen anything like it before. He was fascinated as his world view slowly tilted.]

The special circumstances were that I belonged specifically to the vampire that owns this house and he fell in love with me, and he's not my fiance. Have they? That's good. Helps with the loneliness. I can do whatever I like, but I've never been much of a fan for forcing people. I fed a day or two ago so I'm doing okay on blood, but if you want the experience, I can give that to you.

And you don’t look a day over twenty-two. Never been much of a screamer anyway, or a crier. All the calm is probably just a way that my brain is trying to keep me relaxed. No one’s shown me fangs or tried to bite me yet so who knows? Maybe I’m in a coma or a mental ward strapped to a table. Or maybe the blow to the back of my head knocked something loose?

Yeah, we’re… [They were a lot of things actually, but Kari wasn’t exactly sure how to describe it.] Friends. [Lame.] Rolling her eyes at herself, Kari forked up another bite of salad and let her attention shift back to Carter, more interested now that she’d experienced some sort of… feeling with Brigitte. ] And you loved him as a human.
Friends are good. I feel like both of you could use friends. [She watched as Kari took another bite of salad, but she could tell the human wanted to know more about her and her relationship with Gabriel.] I did. It was a bit of a rocky road at first, what with the whole kidnapping thing, but he was kind... mostly. He's not a bad man. He's one of the best men I've ever met. Just because of what he is doesn't change that.
