She nodded as a laugh escaped her lips at the incredulous look on his face. "We're a small town, things take a bit longer to catch on around here. But the townspeople are so supportive that where you'd expect them to be hesitant or wary of something so new, they're more excited to come alongside someone from town doing something new." Val couldn't help but gush. This was part of why she loved Briar Ridge as much as she did. Blushing a bit when she realized she'd given more explanation than was needed, she dipped her head down a bit before finally meeting his gaze again. "So where're you from, then?"

As he described, almost to a tee, what she herself had imagined for the space, her wistful smile came back. "I'm glad someone else can envision it too. Maybe my plans aren't too far off, after all." There was still so much she needed to do in order to make her yoga studio come to life, but finding a space like this, felt like a small sign from the universe that maybe, just maybe, she was making progress. "Just wandering through, hmm?" she questioned, giving him a raised brow. "Well, how much time do you have? Because I could talk about Briar Ridge and all it has to offer all day." she replied with a chuckle.

Now this piece of information was interesting — nothing he couldn't already surmise from the town having been here a few weeks already, but.. important to note that the townspeople weren't as forgiving when it came to outsiders. And it was something Carter was determined to challenge. In his eyes, the town needed a little bit of a push to liven things up, so to speak. "I can understand that." No he absolutely could not. "It's hard to budge when everyone's so comfortable with the way things are. But if you are a town local then, I guess you've got an in 'cause you know people will have your back." A smirk of sorts plants itself on his features as he eyes her curiously. "Well, where do you think I'm from? Take a guess," he spreads his arms out before folding them in front of him, leaning against the countertop now. "Maybe they aren't. —In fact, I have all afternoon. Forgive me if I'm being too forward but, do you want to grab a drink with me?"

It wasn’t every day Levi heard that anyone could relate as to how he found himself in Briar Ridge. Hardly in his entire time of being a resident, in fact. On the other hand, he understood if the other man wasn’t going to explain further. Levi didn’t press when he had his own internal battles either, and they had just met after all. “Better ‘sort of’ than not at all.” He mused. “Usually seems to be more often the latter...” Levi shook his head with a small grin, returning the handshake, as if solidifying that this could be an opportunity not to pass up. “Likewise Carter. — This way.” His direction shifted in the opposite direction, back towards Alvaro’s. “I worked a couple firms, jumped around a bit before the job here. I liked being at as many as I could, how they all would operate, you know?”

As they settled in the restaurant now, Carter sat back in his seat and got comfortable. His entire career was about forming relationships and building trust, making connections that would further benefit his agenda. And this was no different. Levi could prove useful. "So you were saying you jumped around a bit before landing in Briar Ridge. Color me curious.. would you say you're loyal to the town?" He briefly scanned the Alvaro's menu before averting his gaze back to Levi.

Harvey blushed, unable to hide how much his friend's flattery got to him. The stress of trying to keep up with the Grapevine's reputation was getting to him. He wanted to do something different— something he could give others to look forward to. It was a long stretch, but deciding to add to the Grapevine's never-changing menu was a big idea he had no faith in. People liked what they liked, and it terrified Harvey to think wanting to bring something new to the table would only bring harm. Thankfully, he had chosen the right person to taste. Carter was a straight shooter— and a family friend. He couldn't think of anyone better.

He wasn't sure what to say, pressing his lips together in a tight smile before bringing his own cup to his lips. Harvey hadn't disclosed much to anyone since coming back to Briar Ridge. He felt like he was new in town all over again, sure that his own graduating class at the nearby college had moved far away from here. But what was he supposed to say? I fucked up, and my parents had to bail me out of jail, and in return, they gave me a business to run? Harvey sighed, his own thoughts exhausting him. "Can we talk about how you settled instead? I feel like that's more of an interesting topic than what's going on with me."

"Ah, the classic deflecting," he mused, a smirk touching his lips. Carter liked to pride himself on the fact that he had what felt like an innate ability to see right through people. Perhaps it was the cynic in him that so easily questioned the intentions of others, or in this case specifically, saw right through them when they tried to deflect from their own problems. Harvey had always been the type to focus on everyone else as opposed to himself when it came to conversations. And given how long he'd known him, Carter knew better than to push. When he was ready. "Is it though? Settling in Briar Ridge, do you mean? I wouldn't say I've settled," he shrugged some, bringing the glass to his lips once more. This wine in particular had something of a woodsy, cherry vibe, and he was certainly enjoying it. "Think of me as fleeting.. you know I could never truly leave my beloved New York. —This is really fucking good, by the way. Not too heavy, not too sweet."

"Well," a sly grin teases Carter's lips now, arching his brows as he considers her offer. "I might just take you up on that offer. I'd love to know what makes this town so.. special." There wasn't a chance in hell Carter believed he'd ever find anything remotely special about this town. He doesn't even remember much as a child, and given his broken relationship with his grandfather who was a Briar Ridge local through and through, he faltered to see his own personal connection to the place. "I do appreciate the set up attempt but, if I need a wingwoman, I'll definitely call you. —So, nowhere else called your name? You came back here?"

"MIT would've opened doors, all of them were open for a fact design firms around the world wanted me - a first generation cuban american female's talent and eye for design. New York, Paris, Berlin, Dubai, Singapore. Especially New York. One of my professors had an architectural internship lined up for me and another had seen my work and so on. Everywhere was open but then my parents had their issues - too many and my brother was in the fire academy. They needed me and they had no one else and I don't even know why I am telling you any of this but I came back and it was rough at first but Briar Ridge took care of me even if dreams gave miles of dust on them now. Its a special place for different reasons and we can find your reason if your willing" Ines spoke having let go of personal information she hadn't shared with anyone - including her family or the man she currently dated or was using mutually. "And I've killed the mood. My question if your still willing - a simple one - favorite color?"

"Damn, sounds like you had it all lined up 'til family got in the way." Carter had a jaded view of family given his own felt very much distant and broken; family wasn't really high up there on the priority list for him. His relationship with his father felt non existent outside of his career.. and that's how he liked it. "So why not now? I don't believe it's ever too late to chase your dreams, as they say. It's true though. If you want to make something a reality, age shouldn't matter." It had taken him this long to get serious about what he wanted out of life, after all. "You think you've killed the mood by sharing a truth? —You know, I feel like that's a tough question. But if I had to choose, probably red. Yours?"

It could actually be chalked up to Noa's disbelief in anyone actually trying to make a move on her. When it came to the love and romance department of her life, she felt she was closing it down due to continued disappointments and never seemingly able to make it work. There was something about herself she needed to re-examine. "It could be because I have to schmooze a lot of people all the time and I work with so many different personalities," she began, "I'm an event coordinator and sometimes that means PR and damage control." Really, it was her lack of self-esteem that just couldn't accept a guy like him would be trying to hit on her. "I work with a lot of businessmen," Noa added for clarity. It made her smile when he took a fry and was so easy to engage with when it came to conversation. "Oh, you're close with Cameron and the Bishops." The response came out as a friendly acknowledgment but the smile had a slight tightness to it. Maika was a Bishop. That meant he knew her if he knew the family. "Hopefully you'll end up liking it here," she said hopefully, "but if you stay then all my venting wouldn't be to a stranger." Noa was actually considering it though, just the mention of it sounded freeing in a way. "If I tell you something about me, would you tell me something about you?" Unsure why she even asked, it was likely to do with not wanting to be the only one vulnerable. The sly grin put a smile on her face and Noa glanced down for a moment, all the more curious what was going on being that grin and those inquisitive eyes. "Well, let me rephrase and also give a bit of a warning... a small town is quiet when it comes to the noise most of the time but its far from quiet when it comes to your business. Small communities and all," she shrugged, "I'm sure you've heard about it."

Carter listened intently, his gaze steady and interested as Noa spoke. Being constantly surrounded by different personalities and handling PR and damage control could easily wear someone down; thankfully, he'd only ever been in the other position. "Fitting," he muses thoughtfully. "I mean it's just that you seem like someone who could handle all the ins and outs of running an event, and sorting out people." He was earnest in his intentions, then. "It makes sense that you'd have a hard time believing anyone's intentions, given what you must deal with. And working with businessmen, no less — that must keep you on your toes." When Noa mentioned Cameron and the Bishops, Carter's eyes flickered with curiousity, noting the slight tightness in her smile. Brief, but noticeable. At least to him. "Small world, huh. Do you know them?" Stupid question, surely everyone knew everyone, but he sensed a little more behind the story there. "Well, I'm happy to oblige. Not going anywhere for now but, let's be honest, I'm a New Yorker, through and through. Doubt I'll be sticking around long." Facts, at least in his mind right ow. Her next question caught him off guard, but he appreciated her willingness to open up. "Sure," Carter agreed after a moment's hesitation, his eyes sparkling with curiousity. "Fair is fair, right? I'll tell you almost anything you want to know. —I've heard that about small towns, but you'd be surprised how nosy city folk can be, too." Especially in the crowds he ran in.

Callum was far too drunk to recall his Irish language lessons at school, but he leaned his head back in deep thought as his face contorted trying to remember. "Right, let's try this one... it's a mouthful..." Callum hiccuped and then turned to face Carter. "Is fearr beagán den ghaol ná mórán den charthanas," he mumbled out. In his drunken state he hadn't pronounced half of it correct, but it didn't matter. "It's something my dad used to say - A little kinship is better than a lot of charity." It felt fitting for the moment. They ordered the whiskey and Callum found a half bottle of beer he had forgot about from earlier, and swigged the end of it away. "Fuck... it must have been trivia night with my friend Gen," he laughed and made an awkward face. "Another irish word for ya. I was so drink I shifted her on the walk home... messy stuff. She's meant to just be my friend!" Callum shook his head. He probably shouldn't have said that but he had no control with the alcohol in his system. At that a bottle of whiskey was placed in front of them with one of those sparkler type things in the top. "Did we order the whole fucking bottle?!!"

Carter gaped at Callum, struggling to make sense of what he had just heard. There was no way, sober or not, that he would ever be able to replicate what Cal had just said. "—You know, when I asked if you could teach me a thing or two.. I thought you'd start off with something basic like a swear word.. or tell me what the word for drink is or something. Didn't stand a chance," he couldn't help but chuckle, his hand resting on his counterpart's shoulder when he explained what the phrase meant. "But that's really touching, my man. You almost made me tear up." Part of him felt a twinge of guilt for putting Callum in this spot. From what Carter could see, he was a genuinely nice guy. But Carter couldn’t afford to let emotions sway his decisions; he had a plan to stick to. He needed to stay focused. When Callum offered a drunken tidbit about his arch nemesis, Carter’s smirk widened. This was pure gold. "You shifted her? What does that even mean?" He leaned in, eager for confirmation. Boy, the damage he could do with this kind of information, the sheer potential for mischief with this kind of information was irresistible. "Who's your friend Gen? Is she hot?" Carter sat back in his chair, sipping on his metaphorical tea (whiskey) with a grin "Yes, yes we did."

"Yeah, that's the one. Alright, I'll hold you to it." He absolutely probably wouldn't try it, knowing him. "I've never really thought too much of the opinions of people in power. A name like River is unique and memorable, if anything. I'm sure her name was common and forgettable." Sometimes people abused their position of power. He'd had several negative experiences with teachers throughout his years of education, but as the constant class clown, he managed to get them all back. Tenfold. "It must be my inevitable charm and confidence," Carter grins cheekily, admittedly believing that statement to be true. "Correct. I'm a real estate agent.. so I'm kind of curious about the real estate in town. Things mustn't move around here as fast as New York, but.. it's interesting to see. —What do you do for a living?"

river smiles at carters words , green hues flickering to her empty milkshake glass and empty plates that once were filled with food. for one , he's not wrong when it comes to his thoughts of people in power , their opinions and ignoring them. ❛ i wish i had that mindset back then. that might have been the best route to take. ❜ she comments in agreement , nodding. looking back towards carter , the grin on her lips is a fond one , due to the compliment that was given. ❛ oh , absolutely , no doubt about it ! ❜ she chuckles , shaking her head at the man who's confidence was seemingly unmatched. ❛ ah , ❜ it comes out as a sound of realization. ❛ you're a real estate agent. okay , that makes sense. and before you take that the wrong way , i mean it in a good way. ── like , you're clearly adaptable. incredibly personable , and obviously you have a significant amount of ... ❜ lifting a hand , river gestures to the man on the other side of the booth vaguely. , ❛ ... conjuration , as discussed. you're like , ─ the number one dude. so , yeah. being a real estate agent makes perfect sense for you. ❜ despite the truthfulness of her words , river can't help but allow the now running joke of carter and his abundance of charm to continue , leading her tone to hold satire and sarcasm. ❛ i'm a conservation marine biologist. i also work at marineland. ❜

"It does?" Carter questions, wondering how obvious it was that he worked in reality. But as soon as River compliments him of sorts, he couldn't help the smile tugging at his lips, eyeing her in amusement. Truthfully, he kinda liked talking to her; she was very intellectual and had interesting things to say, for a complete stranger. "Conjuration? That's a big word. Are you telling me I'm so great that I'm magical? Please, darling.. you flatter me," he smirks, noting her tone as he rested his head momentarily on his palm. "I don't think I've ever thought about being anything but a real estate agent, if I'm honest." Perhaps the first tidbit of honesty he'd actually offered anyone since his arrival in Briar Ridge. "I'm just—good at it. Ah, a marine biologist.. wow." Of course she'd have a much more interesting job than he. "Suits you. Marineland's the aquarium in town, right? Have you travelled for your job or..?"

After hearing that many of her friends were gathering for a beach day, Genesis thought that it seemed like a wonderful opportunity to get Juliana out of the house to burn off some steam. Now that school had finished for the summer, the six-year-old was missing her friends and begging for more of her attention than ever.

Lounging in the sand with her newest read, the brunette watched as her daughter splashed about with her friends, taking in the beautiful weather and good company. Though she was at least a little bit disappointed by the fact that Callum had yet to wander over and say hi, she couldn't help but notice just who had been occupying his attention. While it was difficult for Genesis to admit that she was at least a little bit jealous curious, the other part of her was happy to confirm that she wasn't the only participant to feel that the kiss had been a mistake.

Carter's newest 'friend' in town, Callum, had invited him for a beach day, and if you knew him, he wasn't ever opposed to showing off his physique. He worked hard for it, after all. But what Carter truly craved was a little drama... and if his hunch was correct given Cal had invited a few people to the beach for a beach day, his self-proclaimed arch-nemesis might be there too. When he spotted her sitting on the sand a few feet away, he couldn't resist. Adjusting his designer sunglasses, Carter sauntered over to his target. It seemed Genesis wanted everyone to think she was engrossed in her little book, but a closer look revealed her gaze was fixed on none other than his Irish friend. Ooft, this was juicy. As he approached her, he made himself comfortable on the sand beside her, a knowing grin planted on his features. "Such a beautiful day, isn't it?" he remarked, his grin now tinged with amusement as he maintained his gaze on Callum.

"Now that is some fine wine," Carter marvelled, swirling the contents of his glass a little as he savoured the taste. He had to admit, it was probably one of the better red wines he'd ever tasted. A wine tour had certainly been an unexpected event in his schedule but, with all his free time, he couldn't help but think of ways to enjoy himself. The last thing he'd expected, though, was to run into a long time family friend, Harvey Moran. Glancing over at the blond now, he couldn't help the grin that eased unto his features. "I still can't believe you're here, in Briar Ridge of all places.." It seriously was a shock to the likes of Carter Chen that so many familiar New York faces kept popping up in the most unlikeliest of towns. What was it about this place?! "And the new owner of this fine establishment."

“Probably more than they realize.” Levi agreed with a nod, entirely keen on potentially hearing this guy out on how he secured his business dealings. At the following question however, Levi found himself pausing a moment. “You’re not wrong with that observation.” He mused with a small grin. “But uh…it was a matter of not really having much of a choice...” At least that’s what he’d convinced himself with. “And..here I am.” Levi shrugged before following suit as his company stood up from his own seat. “It does. Definitely. — Good to meet you. I’m Levi. Levi Becker.” He securely shook Carter’s hand in return. “There’s an onsite restaurant here, actually. Alvaro’s. It’s top notch. Unless you’re feeling something in particular?”

Never am, though he wouldn't admit that out loud. Not to someone he was trying to befriend. "Oh?" To be fair, Carter could admittedly sympathise with that, and relate to it himself. Coming to Briar Ridge felt like the only way to appease his father and instil a little confidence in his father when it came to his abilities and his dedication to his work. He wanted to be taken seriously. "I guess I can sort of relate." But he wouldn't explain further. After all, the man hadn't given much either. "Levi, pleasure is all mine. Carter Chen," he smiles lopsidedly as he takes the man's hand. Levi seemed interesting enough for Carter to want to explore further. "Alvaro's works. I'll take your word for it. So what kind of accounting did you do back home?"
