Neither Columbo or Matlock enjoy having cases where they are forced to put friends or colleagues behind bars. Maybe more accurately, it’s bittersweet.
Having a muse with very particular interests / hobbies / occupations / etc. that, as a mun, are completely foreign to you feels a lot like this during the research and writing process:

Ben Matlock is a practical man and runs a very practical law firm ... usually. If he were in a pontificating ramble, it may come out that his usual clientele present no challenge to defend & that simply doesn’t keep an older gentleman’s mind sharp ... does it ?
Now, he’s a little farther north than usual -- in territory that’s not exactly his own, called in on a special assignment. ( He’s quite fond of those, actually ! )
Now, he’s sitting in a tiny diner across from his latest contact ... who admittedly doesn’t look like he’s doing none to well.
“ You want some more coffee ? I can ask the waitress to leave the whole carafe ? “

Columbo usually works alone. It’s been his manner & creed for nearly two and a half decades now. He’d have thought the department had learned that by now, gotten used to his strange investigating proclivities, but then again -- new management had cleaned house except for he and a handful of privately selected personnel. The detective didn’t have time to really ponder his situation as the cab rolled to a stop in front of a sketchy office building.
( The department had never relied on mediums and all that mumbo - jumbo before and the inclusion of one such individual turned P.I. had taken the Lieutenant back in the worst way. He’d nearly laughed the new seated chief out of his newly renovated office. Until he’d realized he was serious and been handed several hefty files full of supernatural cases that had been solved no less. That had given Columbo pause and only then had he accepted the position tasked to him. )
It gives Columbo the immediate creeps, like the old abandoned tenement buildings where he grew up in Brooklyn. Passing them used to scare the bejeezus out of he and his hooligan friends. He chews the Montecristo cigar nervously, not bothering to light it as he pays his fare and steps cautiously from the cab, onto the curbside pavement. The detective shambles slowly inside, barely even bothering to knock as he pushes on a door that is either marked ‘ Swift ‘ or ‘ Lift ‘.
