Heather almost shared her experience about feeling like she was still a kid and not anymore—but she held off from that, not wanting to go against the man’s wishes on all the reminders he gets from time flying by. Instead, she simply hummed in agreement and smiled at the tone he used to express the horror of almost middle school. “To be honest though, if there’s anything scary about Halloween…in my opinion, it’s all the Minions costumes. Can’t ever seem to get away from those,” she shivered.

Casey couldn’t help but laugh softly at the comment, “Oh, you have no idea how many times I was forced to watch everything Minions related. I’m so glad Abby outgrew that phase.” he said, shaking his head. “So I definitely agree with you on that one. I’m hoping maybe they start to die down some this year. I at least haven’t seen much of them in the stores that already want to have Halloween stuff out.”

Cal gave a little shrug. “School was alright for me,” he said. “I didn’t do badly, but I wasn’t really interested in most of my classes. I just liked auto shop. I didn’t even really enjoy reading until I got older.” He chuckled. “I didn’t want to do it because they were making me.” He smiled. “Aw, that’s sweet. That’s how I felt, too.”

Casey gave a small laugh, “Ah, yeah, I knew a few people like that when I was younger. People are good at different things, have different interests. Not everybody likes the typical school subjects. I always hated math, figured out how to do enough of it to pass what I needed, but I hated it.” he shared before nodding, “Yeah, it makes sense. Especially at that age, it’s hard to see friends too much outside of school when everybody’s parents have to agree to get them together.”

         “Middle school is rough, good luck since well your kid is older than mine and you will reach that point faster than me.” Haley teased, part of her was excited to see Lydia get into high school and hopefully by then she would be around more permanently to give advice and hope that her daughter would do better than she did. “I’m sure Abby appreciates you being there.” 

Casey laughed softly, “Thanks, I’m preferring to remain mostly in denial about that for the next couple of years though. Nine is still pretty little ... that’s what I’m telling myself anyway.” he added with a grin. “I hope so. She doesn’t have a mom anymore so ... you know, I don’t want her to feel like she’s missing out on anymore then necessary.”

          This time last year if you asked Ali whether or not she ever expected to leave her job she would’ve laughed, but nowadays it was never very far from her mind. The chance of that actually happening was unlikely, but there were times - like now - when the urge hit strong. She already missed out on enough from pulling long hours at the firm. What else would she miss once Wyatt had school and his own activities filling his schedule? Troubled by the though Alicia frowned, but the expression quickly got replaced by a placid smile. Right now wasn’t the time to start dwelling on several years in the future. “I’m sure she’d like that. Do your parents live far?” Despite working together she didn’t know very much about Casey or his life. Then again, before now she’d probably been too self-absorbed to learn.

Casey smiled over at his co-worker, shaking his head, “No, they’re just in Atlanta.” he explained, “So it’s a bit of a drive, but not across the country or anything.” he explained before cocking his head slightly as he considered her reaction before, “Is everything okay?” he questioned. It had certainly seemed as if there was something on the others mind, and Casey was always willing to listen. He had adapted very quickly to his role as ‘big brother’ and that often extended out to other people he knew.

“Wow – good for you. When Soph was born I was fortunate enough to be able to take a big chunk of time off. Half the time I wished I was back in school or working, but looking back on it I have no idea how I would’ve managed it. I was barely coping without any other stress dragged into it. Are you a hot shot lawyer now? I’m sure your kid would be proud to bring you in for career day. That a fourth grade thing, right?” 

Casey smiled, “I wish I could have done that.” he told the other man, “But Abby was a bit of a surprise so ... I needed to stay in school to make sure I’d get to where I could support her.” he explained before giving a small shrug, “I’m a lawyer, don’t think I’m really at ‘hot shot’ level though, but I hope she’d be proud of it. I haven’t heard about a career day yet though.” he added. “How old is your daughter now?”

“I guess that is fair. Also, I’d have to pop out a couple of children before having grand-kids. That or adopt, which is always a very tempting thing for me.” Alexandria replied, smiling at her brother. Alexandria and Casey both knew first hand how great adoption can be. “I am sure that Abby and I will have a wonderful time. I promise not to spoil her too much.”

Casey nodded, “Yeah, I still think about maybe adopting too. I always wanted Abby to have siblings.” he agreed. He wasn’t sure if there was really ever going to be someone else for him after Isabelle, so he often thought about just biting the bullet and starting the adoption process on his own. “Thank you! As long as your the one handling all the fashion choices, I can even live with a little spoiling.”

“What can I say? I just love to deliver bad news.” The brunette joked, “Don’t know anyone really who’s ready to start planning all that stuff. God know I’m not. Its more want, want, want, then anything else.” Dylan smiled as the male explained how it was just him and his little girl. A sweet idea, really. “That’s understandable, and sweet.” Most of the time you heard of people not being able to wait to send their kids off to school. So it was always a little surprising to hear it go the other way. “Cherish. Always cherish.”

Casey laughed, “It’s kind of funny with kids though, half the time they ‘want’ everything in every commercial the closer it gets, but you can tell what they’re actually interested it.” he said. He knew with Abby it almost seemed more like an instinctive reaction to say ‘I want that’ for every toy she saw on TV, as if that was just the right thing to say after an impressive commercial. “Yeah, well, I mean, she’s a really amazing kid. I like having more time to spend with her.”

“So soon? I suppose it’s been a while since I attended school.” She admitted shuffling the books in her arms. “That’s sweet, i’m sure she feels the same way. She’s your only daughter?” Emily asked curiously. Emily herself was an only child and while a sibling would have been nice growing up she received all the love and attention she could possibly want from her parents. “I can’t believe it’s almost fall.” She shook her head in amazement of how quickly time escaped them.  

Casey nodded, “I know, it seems soon to me too.” he agreed before smiling, “I think she does a little bit, but she’s also excited to get back to her friends.” he explained, “But, yeah, it’s just been us for a while, so I’ve certainly enjoyed having her around a little more.” he added. He’s always thought he wanted more kids, and he still thought he would. Maybe he would adopt one day if he never found someone else. “I really can’t either, I swear it was just Christmas last week.”

Cal smiled at him. “Thanks,” he said. “I didn’t really intend to go back until recently, but when the thought came to me, I realized it was a good one.” He smiled. “Oh, I’m sure she’ll have loads of fun. Is she excited?”

Casey nodded, “I can understand that. Honestly, it was stressful at the time, but I always did enjoy school, really.” he shared, and it was mostly stressful as he spent most of his time in college and law school as a young single father. “She is, very! She’s sad about break being over, but she’s excited to see her friends again.”

“It’s pretty dang crazy!” Heather answered with her eyebrows raised. She had an enthusiastic grin on her face as she picked up a few decorative notebooks. School shopping was always her favorite; though nowadays her lurking around the supplies corner in the store wasn’t for school considering she graduated the year before. “It feels like summer just started, huh? Then again, summer vacation tends to go away in the blink of an eye. I can see why you’d want her to stay at home longer,” the young woman smiled. “Time does fly. I’m already seeing Halloween decor. Isn’t it scary? No pun intended,” she silently laughed at herself.

Casey nodded, “It’s insane, I swear it’s like she finishes for the year and then I blink and they’re telling me to get ready to send her back.” he said, shaking his head in slight amusement, “Honestly, I really don’t appreciate all the reminders that she’s getting older. Saying she’s nine is bad enough, fourth grade almost sounds worse. That’s almost fifth grade, almost middle school.” he said with a tone of not-entirely-fake horror, “That’s definitely scarier then the Halloween decorations.”

Already a step ahead but I assume the talk was a bit awkward.” Haley could only assume that it would be awkward for her especially when the time comes when Lydia turned to a certain age asking all sort of questions if her ex would let her have some time that is. “No wonder why parents are always like appreciate your kids when they’re kids because next thing you know they are off to college and starting their own lives.” 

Casey laughed softly, “Very awkward, I think it always is.” he admitted, “But she’s only nine so I went with the ‘basics only’ version, we’ll get into more maybe before middle school.” he added with a small shrug. “It really is crazy how fast they grow up, honestly I feel bad for my parents, they had less time then most people. I wasn’t even with them yet when I was Abby’s age.”

“I can’t even imagine – I spend like, every minute of the day with Soph. When she’s old enough to be gone eight hours a day, I’m going to have to go and do something with my life so I don’t go crazy sitting at home missing her.” Andrew reached out and took the list from Casey, glancing over it. “Oh, man, I used to love shopping for school supplies. New pencil crayons and lunch bags and all that stuff – what grade is your daughter going into?” 

Casey laughed softly, “I probably could have been the same if I wasn’t so busy when she was born - I was still in school, then law school pretty quick after that.” he explained before giving a small shrug, “But still, you know, I like to be with her as much as I can when I’m not at work, and summers are pretty continent for that.” he added. “She’s going into the fourth grade, which, honestly, should be impossible.”

“I feel like it wasn’t that long ago that we were kids just enjoying ourselves. Next time we know we are going to be retired and drinking orange juice while we watch our grandchild play in the yard.” Alexandria replied, smirking at the older boy. “I can always make time for an adventure with Abby. It was only a matter of time until she decided that I was cooler than you.”

Casey laughed at her words, “I don’t know if time’s going by quite that fast just yet, but it’s going fast enough.” he said, shaking his head softly in amusement at his little sister’s words. “But yes, that sound like wonderful plan! Aunt and niece bonding and all that. And I don’t have to go clothes shopping.”

          Alicia’s son still had several years before setting foot inside of an elementary school, but she that didn’t mean she wasn’t already dreading it. She’d gotten far too used to having Wyatt constantly within sight over the last seven months. “I get uncomfortable leaving my son for a handful of hours, so I don’t even want to think about what it’ll be like when he’s gone the entire day.” Removing her gaze from the leaf of paper in his hands she wondered, “Do y’all have anything fun planned to finish off the summer?”

Casey sighed, “I guess the initial change to having her in school wasn’t weird for me, because I was still in law school until she started but ... I’ve always really enjoyed having the summers with her.” he shared with a small smile. “I’ll probably take her to the beach again, I might even drive down to spend a long weekend with my parents, let her spend some time with them.”

“I’m sorry, what?” Abby was only half paying attention to the man next to her speaking about something or another. Was it school? She had enough to worry about with her own studies starting in just a few short weeks. She was a bit rusty when it came to school,  and was steeped in her own anxiety and nerves and wondering if she really needed a calculator for her history program. It was only when she heard her name did her head snap up from her phone, glancing at the stranger in confusion before she slowly realized what he was talking about. “Oh. Oh not me. Okay, sorry, that was a bit strange.”

Casey frowned at the confused words from the woman he was speaking to before she continued and he laughed softly, “Oh! No, I’m sorry. My daughter’s name is Abby, I was talking about her.” he said with a grin, “I’m guessing that’s your name as well, then? Well, it’s nice to meet another Abby, I have to say I have good experiences with that name.” he joked before holding out a hand for her to shake, I’m Casey, it’s nice to meet you.”

“Well, I mean —” Dylan glanced over at the male, and simply shrugged, “— the whole year went by pretty quick. You blink, and it’ll be Christmas, rounding into New Year’s.” It was still rather hard to believe it was August already, after all, where had all the time gone? They hardly felt as if they’ve accomplished anything for it to nearly be the end of 2018. “Depends on the person, I guess. Kids can be a handful, makes sense that some are looking forward to having eight hours of the day to themselves, and getting whatever they need done without interruption. Others aren’t bothered, each to their own.”

“Oh, don’t remind me!” Casey said, shaking his head with a small grin on his face, “I’ll have to start thinking about Christmas presents soon. I know it will be here before I blink.” he commented before giving a small shrug, “Oh, I mean, I get that. I do. It’s just me and Abby though so ... I like having the time with her.” he explained. He had never quite forgotten how easily he could have lost her as well the night they lost Isabelle, and he still wanted to cherish every second.”
