Kind of want to talk about how ultimately the person who kills the major im tlw is a black gay man, who's openly kind and soft in a world where that is constantly punished, who talks about wanting to be a poet and a songwriter in a world where the arts isn't prioritised and reading or writing anything anything outside of the norm can get you killed. And who is mocked by the major right before he kills him for being someone who wants to make the world a better place.

The thing with Barkovitch is that he's 100% such a more interesting character by being an asshole. In the analogy of war, he's such an interesting depiction of the "innocence" in the ignorant cruelty of teenager soldiers. Most shithead teenagers are rude and fight with each other and most of the time, nothing happens. War happens in the background but it's all things unrelated to them.

When you give a young man a gun who doesn't understand the gravity of what he's doing, being an asshole has real consequences and many of these young men who wake up, do so too late. It feels like it calls to the conflicting nature of veterans who are haunted by the horrendous things they did as young men. Like, no, you are not innocent in the slightest but why did they give you the gun? Why were you put in a situation where your schoolyard scuffle caused another boy to die? And now it's too late and you're a "killer" to everyone instead of the men who are actually pulling the strings

Reducing him to a misunderstood kid who just socially outcast is taking out all the interesting stuff! Plus, you want a sweet boy who wanted to make friends, Art Baker is right there!!

YES YOU SAID EVERYTHING I WANTED TO SAY. Barkovitch is 10 times more interesting as an unlikeable character than as an innocent flower who's done nothing wrong and is misunderstood / bullied by everyone.
