I’ve been listening to Bettany Hughes lectures about the Bronze Age and Helen of Troy and I was struck with inspiration to paint my own Helen of Sparta - Helen before she married as a noble woman of Sparta. There’s evidence that women of that period painted their faces and chests white with lead, and there’s surviving frescos that show woman painted with red suns on their cheeks and chins.
