How did you get a college agent?
The most common way to get a college agent is to send a clean tape to an agent you want to work with and follow up. Assuming they find it funny, you'll need to convince them you're a punctual person with a minimal amount of sociopathic tendencies. Don't be too self conscious about that last part because most comics have serious issues. We're talking weapons grade personality flaws.
What's it like working colleges compared to clubs and other gigs?
College gigs pay WAY better than club gigs. An entry level comic usually makes $1000 for each 45 minute show. But you'll earn that money because the audience is sober and they're obsessed with political correctness.
Clubs are a better place to develop material because your audience is a lot more diverse. You'll have 20 year olds, 50 year olds and ever socio-economic demographic there is. And clubs offer the chance to learn from big name comics who drop into the shows. Jerry Seinfeld will stop by Gotham but he's not going to do a guest spot at Suffolk Community College. Although Dave Chappelle might, if that's where his weed dealer goes.
Do you recommend pursuing becoming a college comic? What are the benefits and disadvantages?
The upside to doing college gigs is that they pay well and they give you a ton of stage time. And of course, the occasional wayward co-ed that invites you to their dorm.
The downside is that they're completely off the grid in terms of showbiz relevance. Nobody that books anything meaningful pays attention to college gigs because they're an isolated demographic. The other downside is that most of those wayward co-eds have HPV.
My recommendation would be to use colleges as a way to make money and develop under the radar. But don't let the money trick you into thinking you're making commercial progress. Ultimately, you need a presence where the big decisions get made, which is here in the city.

Being a national headliner who has several TV appearances to her credit (such as Comedy Central's Premium Blend and ABC's The View), a YouTube web series called The Jessy K Show, and multiple festival appearances, you know that this lady brings her hilarious A-game every single time she takes the stage. You won't want to miss her when she's in your area, and she is someone that will definitely grab your attention no matter how many times you do see her. Simply put, go check her out!

JIMMY FAILLA'S ADVICE TO YOUNG COMICS via Andy Engel's Tuesday Tips

I first started getting stage time by producing my own weekly show, which allowed me to trade spots for stage time on other people's shows. This was a great way to meet like minded-comics to write with, produce with, and smoke weed with. Just kidding about the producing part.
Barking was extremely helpful because it allowed me to get onstage a lot more than I would have if I simply walked in the door with my hand out. As hard as it might be to imagine, there weren't too many people lining up to book a community college graduate that no one had ever heard of.
I started off by hosting an open mic at a youth Hostel on 27th street. It was mainly playing to comics and apologizing for the failure of new material, but it added a layer of spontaneity that I wouldn't have found doing regular spots. Plus, I learned how to say "you suck" in 12 different languages.
The first thing hosting taught me is that MC's have a huge responsibility to the other comics to keep the mood light and the show moving. As much as you want to call the bachelorette the c-word, in most cases doing so will create a level of hostility that makes it hard for the other comics to break through. And even if you're destroying, you have to limit your time between acts or the show will run long. If this happens comics will miss their spots, the waitstaff will miss their drug dealers, and everyone will hate you.
The earliest paid jobs I got were road gigs that were way farther from the city than advertised. Bookers give you mileage estimates the way women give you their number of sex partners. Whatever the number is, a safe bet is to always double it. For this reason, owning a car is, and always will be, the number one criteria for getting road work. When you get introduced to a road booker, an '89 Ford Escort is far more impressive than a Letterman spot.
Takeaway:
To me, the most important thing to remember is that you are only competing against yourself in comedy. A lot of comics get hung up on who gets what credit or which development deal. But at the end of the day, all of YOUR success will depend on your ability to discipline yourself to write everyday, record every set, and edit yourself without a conscience. The one commonality amongst people getting the big credits is that they all work their asses off. And it would help to have a terrible childhood but one for two should do it in most cases.

New Orleans-born, NYC-based Mark Normand has most certainly made a name for himself in the stand-up comedy world, headlining at establishments all throughout the country (including, most recently, Casual Showcase at NYC’s Casa Humo and the 2nd annual Brooklyn Comedy Festival) and appearing on TV including Comedy Central’s Half-Hour, TBS’s Conan and others; you may also recognize him as a co-producer and regular of a previous pick of mine, the ever-popular Hot Soup at the Irish Exit. (Oh yeah, and he even has a CD out as well, the recently-released Still Got It!.) Certainly one of the most brilliant minds in stand-up comedy today – original, quick, straightforward, sharp, and energetic, all with a generous drizzle of edgy. Oh, and did I mention musically talented? This is everything that comes in the punchline-filled package that is comedic veteran Paul Bond. A personal favorite of yours truly, this laugh-inducing Long Island native has headlined clubs, bars, casinos and other major venues all across the country with his witty brand of comedy, pulling no punches as he talks about stuff that can and can’t be talked about, plus his view of the general ignorance of everyday people, and other topics that you may very well be with him on. You’ll find yourself in stitches with his impressionist skills, also with the sharp wit and charm that’s all his own. Then comes the other half of his talents: the music. Armed with his guitar and even more wit, Paul sings his humorous heart out with a collection of original and parodying numbers that will keep you laughing all night long. With all his credited appearances, plus a variety of CDs for sale and an upcoming TV pilot in the works, Paul Bond is poised to be the next big star of comedy. Speaking from experience, I can say that one single show certainly won’t do you justice – he is someone you’ll want to see again and again. Any parents of young children out there? Any among you who heart some funny music that – let’s face it, was made for the non-parental side of you? Then make sure the youngsters aren’t in the room when you hear this giggle-inducing grown-up version of children’s music. The hilariously melodic duo of Zach Miko and Karen Bray lampoon the children’s genre with songs about topics you’d never find for the little ones, like your (realistic) future and…well, whatever it is that happens to you at a certain teen-age. Say hello to the Straight Up Stand Up comedy series, an every-other-weekly summer comedy show bringing some of L.I.’s and the country’s finest acts to a fun and festive outdoor atmosphere (with a backup room indoors in case of rain, thus guaranteeing a show. And if you’re a comic that’s just checking this show out, you can enter your name in a lottery for this show and quite possibly get some stage time for yourself! Sweet deal, yes?). This event is straight-up fun and it’s something that, if you’re in the area, you should definitely have on your summer fun list. Another one of the funniest talents to emerge from the Long Island comedy scene, Keith Anthony lets it all fly in his routine as he touches on topics such as the effects of aging, and shopping at Wal-Mart. This 20+ year veteran of stand-up does it all with a gripping style and wild character that makes you take notice and laugh as you do so. He has many major club, casino and festival appearances to his credit, and has opened for the likes of Bill Hicks, Sam Kinison, and Bobby Collins, among others. Whenever and wherever he may appear next, you’ll want to catch him if you happen to be in that same area – his character and rapid-fire ability are what makes his act unique, and it’s something you definitely don’t want to miss out on.

Definitely a real talent for the ages, Rob Falcone is a veteran of stand-up comedy who also boasts on-screen credits for prominent TV shows such as The Sopranos, Blue Bloods, and Orange is the New Black. His brand of comedy shows you a stressed-out, grizzled individual (all in good fun, mind you) who has seen many unusual situations in his everyday life and with anyone he happens to meet. His material, which touches on things including TV, food, relationships, driving, and other everyday happenings, will keep you laughing from the minute he starts till the minute he leaves (or even some time after he leaves because it’s just that memorable). If you’re a fan of (mostly) autobiographical material with a healthy side of hilarious hijinks, go see Rob Falcone at a venue nearest you. Trust me; you’ll have quite the good time doing so.

They’re not monkeys, nor are there any typewriters or Shakespearean dialect involved (that I know of). What they are, though, are the new kids on the sketch comedy block. This funny and fun-loving collective from New York City gets audiences laughing with their brand of sketch comedy, lampooning various subjects from current events to simply what makes America so great (depending on your definition of the word “great”). Set once a month in the fun basement atmosphere of the popular NYC watering hole, the Triple Crown, Monkeys Typing Shakespeare looks to be the next sketch group ready to make a big impact in the casual comedy scene. If sketchy hilariousness is your thing, go check them out!

SPECIFIC WRITING TIPS by Andy Engel
Whenever most people write jokes, they come up with a single punchline and then think all the work is done.
Write several punch lines:
A great idea is to try to come up with 3 or 4 additional punchlines. Number one, it forces you to push yourself to your limits. But more importantly the later punchlines are not as obvious and will often be the smarter ones. Always try to come up with the least likely punch line.
Low hanging fruit:
Certain news headlines are very often unintentionally funny. The headline can function as a set up for a joke and can even get you a laugh before you write a punchline. That is a gift you don't want to pass up. The punchline is like icing on the cake- it's a double joke- you get a laugh on the set up and the punchline. A good source to find these "funny headlines" is DrudgeReport.com, CNN, Huff Post. But I think DrudgeReport really has a plethora of funny headlines.
However, you don't want get lazy and just rely on easy set ups that you didn't write.
Mix & Match:
Many of the late night monologue jokes are simply two current hot news stories married together. I like to take a piece of paper and write down ten hot stories and split them up into two columns and see which ones look easy to combine. Or just one column and pair them up.
Unpopular view:
Another method to help stretch your comedic writing is to take the opposite view than the majority of the public and write jokes with a viewpoint most people don't subscribe to. It's easy to write a joke that the majority of your audience will give you a "Jay Leno" laugh. I think Leno sometimes stops writing jokes and just makes popular statements to get a classic positive " We support you cheer". Push yourself to think differently and more creatively.
Takeaway: Practice different writing exercises and techniques to find what you like the best and what helps you grow.

From the moment he walks onto the stage and starts his act, a number of words to describe Ben Kronberg may cross your mind. Random? Yes. Witty? Definitely. Unusual? Depends on your definition of "unusual". Hilarious? Uh, you bet! His punchline-induced observations and out-of-the-blue one-liner moments (oftentimes with the help of his signature jokebook in hand) will certainly grab your attention when he's up on stage. He is also accomplished in the world of comedic music, with some side-splitting original raps (from the perspectives of otherwise unwanted characters) to his credit. Those of you who have watched Last Comic Standing may recognize him from the notoriety he gained from his banter with one Roseanne Barr (and turned a potentially bad situation into something great for all his fans). However you may feel about him, there is no denying that this is an act you certainly have to see - because who knows what you'll get with him? And sometimes, randomness is the spice of life, especially in the world of stand-up comedy. And especially when you see Ben Kronberg on a stage in your area.

HOW TO DEAL WITH BOMBING by Andy Engel
Embrace the bomb, love the bomb, and learn from the bomb.
As a comic you're going to bomb numerous times. Steve Martin said if you are doing something new and groundbreaking people are not going to get you for three years or so. When Seinfeld started he bombed 50% of the time. Sam Kinison cleared rooms, (a classic example of what Steve Martin was writing about).
Louis CK did a set and didn't perform for two years because he had such a bad experience. So the clear lesson is that everyone bombs.
The point is it's not whether you are going to bomb, but more importantly, how you're going to deal with it. You learn a lot more about your set when you bomb. If everything goes well you probably are getting an inaccurate assessment of how your set really is, unless you have been working on it for ten years. If you do a set that has a lot of weak spots but some strong ones, the strong ones are probably "keepers" if the crowd is tough. The bits that work are worth keeping.
Some comics who bomb often are brilliant comics who simply have not found their audience yet.
Bombing can be the sign of a bad comic but can also be the sign of brilliant act that most audiences just don't get. If you are doing something brilliant and smart your audience will find you.
You have to have a room where you can bomb comfortably on a regular basis. In other words, a room where you can fail with no repercussions to test out new material, ideas, characters, rants etc. Don't try a whole new set at a New Talent show. That should be where you bring your A game to make a great DVD.
How to bomb gracefully: Recognize the fact that you are bombing. Poke fun at yourself. Go off from your written set if you have to. Try something different. Do some crowd work if you're good enough.
But the two cardinal rules are: Don't blame the audience and don't blame the club. Nothing is worse than a comic who goes on a rant against the crowd or the club. That can make a small thing a really big problem.
Takeaway: Don't be afraid of bombing- acknowledge it and confront it.

There are two types of barkers: street teams and comics working for stage time. Street teams are made up individuals selling tickets for their own profit. They are, essentially, scalping tickets. They sell the tickets to people in Times Square to make their living, and in doing so they help fill the rooms at comedy clubs all over the city.
Comics who bark for stage time are generally in their first few years of comedy and bark until they're passed at the club. Some clubs will ask their barkers to pass out flyers while others expect the comics to make ticket sales on the street. Some clubs expect their barkers to hit certain numbers to earn their stage time by either selling a specific amount of tickets or having a certain amount of people come to the club with their flyers. Other clubs and rooms will simply have people hit the street right outside and try and bring in pedestrians.
Barking is a great way for a young comic to start getting up in front of crowds that aren't full of other comics (like open mics). You have to work for your stage time, but it gives you an opportunity to get in front of real audiences and perform with headliners and other great comics who have been passed at the club. It also allows you to be at a club around other comics every night, having your face seen and your voice heard, which can lead to bookings on other shows. As a barker, you might even be able to make a little bit of money depending on the system at your club.
Barking is a difficult job if only because of the sheer amount of rejection. Even the most successful barkers sell to less than 1% of the people that pass them on the street, and being ignored, yelled at, and told by tourists that they are "their own comedy show" can be taxing on your spirit. The best barkers are able to keep a smile on and talk about their shows with enthusiasm for as long as they're out there knowing that it's all for the most precious entity around: stage time.
Keep in mind that not all clubs in the city use barking. For example, Gotham and The Comedy Cellar don't have barkers for their shows.
Takeaway: If you can hack it, barking is a great way to get stage time before you're ready to get guest/paid spots.

Unquestionably one of the great comedic acts of today, this New England native charms audiences all throughout the globe with her brand of comedy, featuring original songs touching on today’s hot topics (including a recently-released song about gentrification). One listen to her music and you will be kept smiling and laughing for a long time to come, and in person, it’s even more exciting to hear. She is definitely one of the hardest-working and most dedicated people in comedy today, as she is also the chief organizer of the annual New York Funny Songs Fest (which yours truly got to attend in great detail this year; surely you should be on the lookout for it next year), which brings together many of the funniest musical comedy acts under one roof (or really, several roofs when you realize it’s in more than one location). Events like these would certainly not be possible without Jessica Delfino, whose comedic compositions are lyrical brilliance defined and have surely influenced many a musical comedy act. You definitely should go see Jessica Delfino whenever she’s around and appreciate some wondrous music that’s been dipped into the batter that is a laugh-out-loud good time!

This monthly showcase, assembled by funnymen Matt Azark and Pat McKechney, puts you, the fan, in an intimate lounge atmosphere featuring some of the city’s (and country’s) funniest comics. With a rotating lineup that also includes various (and hilarious) guest hosts in a true East Village hotspot, you won’t be saying “comedy schmomedy” after this show – you’ll just cheerfully yell “comedy!” (inside, of course, because out loud, you might get a few looks – or is that just me?). HOW TO DO IMPERSONATIONS by Andy Engel
As someone who has done celebrity impersonations professionally and been paid for it numerous times I have some insights and want to help people.
It's very important to have an honest and tough coach/fellow comic critique the accuracy of your impersonations very bluntly. If a comic does a bad joke in a set it's no big deal, you just move on. However, if a comic does a weak or bad impersonation it is something that people remember. It really leaves a bad taste and nothing says "amateur" more than an inaccurate impersonation or a hack one. It's a tougher road, you are being judged on the impersonation and the joke or bit.
However, if you are good it can be a fast ticket to break into clubs faster than comics who don't do impersonations. Good impersonators can make a lot of money- Danny Ganz had a theater named after him in Vegas.
I believe that you can't teach someone to do impersonations- they either have a natural gift or they don't. If you have the gift and want to try, here are some Do's and Don'ts.
Do try to find your range, most impressionists have a list of voices that they can do.
Don't work on voices that everyone has done, get the hack list of impersonations and don't do any of the ones on that list.
Do try to do ones that have not been done a lot.
1- You need to start with a high quality audio recording device and get some short samples of the voices you are attempting to mimic. Every celeb has a few famous lines, catch phrases, facial expressions, gestures and quirks that you want to focus on. Find out what is their most famous line or sound bite.
2- What trait, emotion, or character are they known for?
3- Focus on the "vowels", that is easier to imitate, find out what part of the body the voice is originating from.
4- Some purists will argue against what I am advocating next. Find a famous celebrity already doing the voice and copy their impersonation. They have already done a lot of the heavy lifting. This is only acceptable if you are imitating a voice as is, not putting an interpretation on it, the way Gilbert Gottfried does. You can't imitate Gilbert's impersonations because he is doing more than an impersonation and putting a unique and original interpretation to it that is his.
5- Exaggerate and draw out a person's most famous traits.
6- Don't think a great impersonation is a substitute for original material- it's not. Many comics think and expect applause for an impersonation- that's a mistake.

8- Listen to your version and then play the real person's and keep doing it until you can't tell the difference.
9- Once you feel you're ready to try them out, only do you're A-list best ones to start until you are getting countless compliments on what a great voice you have.

Truly one of the funniest acts to hail from Long Island (hey, they would know, as he was voted LI's funniest comic of 2013), Chris Monty comes out swinging with his own personal, punchline-sprinkled stories coupled with his witty charm and sharp worldly observations that show you a man that's seen it all. If he looks at all familiar to those of you who have been reading Roberto's Casual Picks from the start, then you may recall an earlier pick of mine, the hilarious "plomedy", Shut Up, Sit Down & Eat!; this talented funnyman is one-fourth of that electric ensemble. With over 15 years of stand-up comedy experience under his belt, New York City's Tom Daddario is like a perfect old-fashioned alarm clock: he keeps on ticking until suddenly, a loud alarm hits you - that's simply my metaphor for how he tells every joke and story during his routine: calm and catchy at first, then seemingly out of nowhere, you're hit with a powerful punchline that will leave you in stitches. His material which covers a wide variety of topics, all with the gift of a sharp delivery, are definitely something to admire about this truly talented comedian who has headlined at many top clubs throughout the US. If somebody one day ever wrote up a stand-up comedy dictionary, and in it they wrote "high-energy comedian loaded with raw talent, sharp wit, and a keen eye for unusual happenings", chances are the definition would be next to a picture of NYC-based funnyman Nore Davis. This young man brings said brand of comedic energy to clubs and casinos all throughout the country, and has been featured on Comedy Central shows including The Ruckus and Inside Amy Schumer. Truly a sought-after talent that you should go seek out yourself when he plays at a venue near you! If you like edgy material with a healthy dose of wit and charm, this is the guy for you.

Another one in the big pool of free NYC stand-up shows, and this one finds us in a top barbecue establishment in the heart of Union Square. Comedian Jeremy Pinsly produces this twice-monthly show loaded up with established comedy veterans and up-and-comers from all across the land. So the next time you're in the mood for some free stand-up, go on and make it Country Time...I mean, tasty BBQ and free comedy? What could possibly be better than that?

Thought I was done with musical picks yet? Not so fast - for I give you Philadelphia-area singer-songwriter Todd Chappelle. This melodic mirth-maker calls his music "moderately funny acoustic comedy", though I personally would replace 'moderately' with 'riotous' (but that's just me, of course). He has charmed many an audience in the Philadelphia area and other parts of the Northeast (including here in NYC) with his skillful blend of popular song parodies and original numbers that touch on any kind of topic. He is not afraid to take current events and turn them into acoustic comedy gold (and his songs have even been featured in local Philly news media). He goes there, and honestly, I hope you go there too - that is, I hope you go wherever he is playing if you're near him because you will enjoy the lighter side of the world today with an acoustic twist. In addition to performing in the annual New York Funny Songs Festival, Todd is also a producer of the Philadelphia Funny Songs Festival, which includes several NYC-area funny musicians (some that I've mentioned on RCP before). Now that you know that the laughs and the talent are all there, all that's left for you to do is go out and see this hilarious acoustic act when you get the chance to do so.
