when Dot was younger she liked horses

she would pretend to be a horse, do a strange mix of skipping and walking that she called a “canter” and claimed was “faster than running”

she took riding lessons, sometimes I watched her practice. She looked happy

she had to stop, by the time my parents forgave her she had already given up on horses

Espi likes horses too, I hope she never has to stop

I do not understand Espi

I wish to keep it that way

when I was little I had a rock

I had smoothed it down with my hands, eroded the sharp edges and made them smooth

I kept it in my pocket and would hold in when I was sad

I lost it

All good things are lost

Everything goes wrong, especially when you love it

I hope a child finds my rock, holds it, feels calm

reminiscing

when Dot and I were younger we would play pretend. Back then I never realized we were different, I was like Dot, Dot was like me. We would hum music based on our current story, like in movies.

We would mix our words, stutter, hum and walk in circles. Of course it was normal to have a set story that we replayed over and over, everything was normal.

I find comfort in glimpses of that past, familiarity in the stutters the hums the stories the fabric the smell the sight the sound the feeling the failures the tears the pain and the joy.

I’ll hold on to this charm, I will give it to “Liam”
