Fun fact: cats have a vemeronasal organ (also called Jacobson's organ) inside their mouths. This organ basically lets them taste complex smells, allowing them to pick up pheromones and other chemical signals that they wouldn't otherwise.

Sometimes after they smell something interesting, they'll open their mouths to use this organ.
