Actually the reason why it's his biggest regret is actually really sad.

He advocated for breeding healthy dogs, while people who followed in his footsteps did not and it resulted in those unethical breeders mass breeding unhealthy and untrainable dogs when their original bred purpose was to be hypo-allergenic dogs to be used for medical assistance like seeing eye dogs etc.

He actually tried to patent the breed to prevent people from doing this but was denied (likely because labradoodles are just crossbreeds with a designer name and not a true breed with consistent traits)

I reccomend reading the article, it was very interesting even though it's sad. Like his original goal was to breed poodles to be guide dogs for a blind woman whose husband was allegeric to dogs, and it wasnt working at all, and he wanted to hurry up and get this woman her guide dog, so breeding a poodle with a lab was less about designing a new breed and more "fuck it, we're out of time let's just try this" and they were very fortunate that one of the puppies from that littler worked out for the woman and her husband.
