let’s bask in the sun with mama ❤️
i have not yet read mary shelley's frankenstein, but i recently watched guillermo del toro's new 2025 film, and i quite liked it. however, i've seen some odd discourse on tiktok about the monster's arc in the second half of the movie (spoilers below).
a lot of people were complaining about how the movie completely ignored his lack of desire for a companion. i've seen comments like "they only put it in one single scene" or "in the book, it was different." i'm not gonna talk about what's in the book because, once again, i haven't read it. however, in the movie, the monster's desire for a companion... was quite literally his whole arc.
i believe when he said 'companion,' people immediately took that to mean 'lover' or a rendition of 'frankenstein's bride.' but the monster was quite literally searching and yearning for companionship throughout the whole film, and companionship doesn't have to be something romantic. the most obvious example of this is his relationship with the hunting family. the monster craved to be a part of that family but was afraid of what they would think of him. would they react to him as victor had? however, he managed to form a legitimate bond with the blind grandfather, feeling safe around the man because of his lack of sight. and for a while, the two were friends or, dare i say, family. while victor was the monster's "father," there was a very grandfather and grandchild-like relationship between the blind man and the monster, and only after the man's death did the monster realize that there is no creature quite like him. he was searching for companionship throughout the whole movie, but only at the end did he realize that those relationships would only end in suffering and eventual death. they were not like him, a being who could not die, so he felt that he needed someone who was.
the monster doesn't seem to understand the implications of creating another (as that separate monster would most likely be just as conflicted and devastated as he), but that's a topic for another post.
if smoke and stack decided to let remmick in, i feel like his white ass would step through the door, there would be a record scratch, and then everybody in the juke joint would look at him like this:
nobody talks about the fact that smoke disappeared for 7 years, leaving annie to deal with her grief alone. i believe one of the reasons he went to chicago was to distract himself from the mourning (and perhaps because there was a subsequent feeling of guilt over the fact that he couldn't save their kid). however, it was so wrong to abandon annie. smoke had his brother, but annie had no one. of course, there were the townspeople, but when we first see her, she lives alone. the anger she must have experienced... at smoke and at herself.
nevertheless, it attests to annie and smoke's relationship that they reconciled almost immediately. i mean, they were truly, deeply in love, and it showed. when they speak again for the first time, the resentment shines bright through annie's words and her facial expressions. but despite the past, it proves difficult for them to resist each other after having been apart for so long, and i loved watching their respect and adoration for each other throughout the rest of the film.
