Day 16 - Favourite visit of Catherine to Wimbledon

Gentleman’s Final 2024 - 14 July 2024

It goes without saying that 2024 was a rough year for Catherine, likely the worst year of her life. She started the year undergoing major abdominal surgery which eventually led to a cancer diagnosis followed by chemotherapy treatment. All of this she went through alongside intense media scrutiny, dealing with the sector of the internet world renowned for its ignorance, wrongness, vileness and loudness. Some of those cowards have attempted to defend their behaviour by saying they were “worried” and “misled” while not realising that worry has never manifested itself as sick glee in anyone with even a shred of decency and the information we had been provided with was more than sufficient considering everyone’s right to privacy. This appearance was only the second time we had seen her this year. I had already been missing her but when she didn’t make an appearance the day before, it really made me worried about how she was doing because her attendance record at Wimbledon meant that the only thing that would have prevented her attending was her physical (and likely mental) health. To see her attend the final day was glorious. She was given a standing ovation upon arrival. I also think it was the first time I had ever seen her use the rail support coming down the steps into Centre Court (which only reminded me of how vulnerable she actually still was despite looking fine to the untrained eye). It made me realise that she had an entire extended family at Wimbledon and they welcomed her with such open arms that it was emotional to see. If we go by the video, it’s quite obvious that she was overwhelmed by the reaction. The picture of Charlotte looking so proud of her mum was also so incredible to see. I loved that she took two of her best girls with her - her sister, Pippa and her daughter (and Pippa’s namesake), Charlotte - it was lovely to see the bond shared between the three of them. I’m also a girl so I will always appreciate a show of female support. Overall, it was such a great day and a reminder that the internet, as loud as it can be sometimes, is not representative of the real world. For anyone who’s been through cancer or looked after someone in the midst of cancer, you know how precious a day out like this would be so I think it will be my favourite for a long time.
