Now, let me be clear with you, this isn’t going to be a ‘fire and brimstone’ homily.

Man is mud whom God has commanded to become god.

Awesome article. I wonder how terrified Burke was when he read these quotes.
Perhaps we wouldn’t have a vocations crisis if you didn’t immediately discriminate half the human race from birth and alienate the already marginalized every chance you get.
Teaching and studying theology means living on a frontier, one in which the Gospel meets the needs of the people to whom it should be proclaimed in an understandable and meaningful way.
Pope Francis as quoted in Francis: Theologians should smell like the sheep, too
Notably, the event did not mention the female role as mothers, usually a hallmark of Vatican activity on women’s issues.
Vatican opens doors to debate on women’s role in the Church and the world by Inés San Martín
The event was a conference held at the Vatican to ponder the role of women. It included women who work at the grassroots fighting poverty and slavery, and those pushing for greater gender equity within the Catholic Church.
Let us thank the Lord for what he has done in his Church in these 50 years of liturgical reform. It was truly a courageous gesture for the Church to draw near to the people of God so that they are able to understand well what they are doing. This is important for us, to follow the Mass in this way. It is not possible to go backwards. We must always go forward. Always forward! And those who go backward are mistaken. Let us go forward on this path.
Pope Francis quoted on the Pray Tell Blog
Congratulations Bishop McElroy. This is the crowd that attacked Cardinal O'Malley for presiding at the funeral of Sen. Kennedy, that thinks the communion rail should be turned into a redoubt in the culture wars, and really, really does not like the Holy Father. Being attacked by them is like being called ugly by a frog.
Michael Sean Winters in is "Links of the Day" post which included a bunch of "rightwing fringe" blogs attacking the new Bishop of San Diego
It is easy for the church to get lost in the rules, but pastoral theology trumps rules.
Robert W. McElroy (soon to be bishop of San Diego)
LARPing as martyrs and persecuted remnants battling Satan Himself is a really exciting delusion.

Focusing so much on ‘purity’ and ‘chastity’ in Catholic social teaching is so narcissistic. There’s a world full of hurting and broken people out there and we’re sitting here debating how ppl should have sex? Bishops are forever in arrested development.
What millennials really want from the church is not a change in style but a change in substance. We want an end to the culture wars. We want a truce between science and faith. We want to be known for what we stand for, not what we are against. We want to ask questions that don’t have predetermined answers. We want churches that emphasize an allegiance to the kingdom of God over an allegiance to a single political party or a single nation. We want our LGBT friends to feel truly welcome in our faith communities. We want to be challenged to live lives of holiness, not only when it comes to sex, but also when it comes to living simply, caring for the poor and oppressed, pursuing reconciliation, engaging in creation care and becoming peacemakers. You can’t hand us a latte and then go about business as usual and expect us to stick around. We’re not leaving the church because we don’t find the cool factor there; we’re leaving the church because we don’t find Jesus there.

Christian faith does not cut us off from the world but immerses us in it; the church is not a fortress set apart from the city. The church follows Jesus, who lived, worked, struggled, and died in the midst of a city. -Archbishop Oscar Romero
