What was the topic or title of the episode or feature?

Answer: Visualization Project - Typhoon

How did DOSTv catch your attention? Why did you select this video?

Answer: While visiting their channel, I saw a graphic video that was posted four years ago. The visuals got my attention and I found it interesting because it was a short video clip that can discuss a whole topic.

What science concepts were presented? How were they explained so that you were able to understand the issue? 

Answer: It discusses Natural Disaster specifically the Typhoon. It was explained in a Visual Presentation where there are pictures and 3D graphics are presented. It was discussed clearly and concise.

What did you like about the episode or feature? 

Answer: I love how it’s a Visual Presentation not a pure and boring picture are only shown in the video. It’s easily to understand if the topic is concise and visually good. I can say that this type of presentation is child-friendly where kids can use this presentation to understand about the Typhoon.

What do you think are the areas that need to be improved?

Answer: Since this were posted 4 years ago, I think DOSTv should bring this kind of video presentation again. Because people nowadays don't watch long and boring videos because for some it’s a waste of time. The presentation was good, no need for improvement.

If you were given a chance to prepare a science communication production, what science-related concept or principle or topic will you feature and why?        

Answer: If I were given a chance, I would love to present the basic sub-topics of Biology. I love biology and I want to show how living things work in various ways. When I was a kid, I got curious about how our bodies function as well as other living things such as plants and I know that a lot of kids and teenagers also experience this. That’s why I wanted to answer their curiosity.

11/24/20: Journal

This day, our instructor Ma’am Framelia gave us a short quiz with a TWIST. Recently, most of our quizzes are in Google Forms but this time we took our quiz on Google Meet. How? We sent our answers on the chat box. It is similar to our traditional type of quiz but some of us had internet difficulties. I think it’s not that effective (because some of my classmates don’t have a stable connection) but it is fun to try. Something new is not bad 💖 It takes a lot of courage to try something new that’s why salute to you Ma’am Fram 💖 After that, Ma’am Framelia discussed about Translating Scientific Information for Various Audiences. It’s a good topic because it was very suitable for our course. I enjoyed listening while eating. Because it was my cousin’s birthday. <3 Multi-tasking is a must. 😉

11/21/20: Journal

On November 21 our class resumed after a long week of examination. It is already our MIDTERM.

If you haven’t noticed on my last two blogs there are only 9 groups who reported and it is supposed to be 10 groups. But Group 9 had a sudden problem but luckily they had the chance to report when our class resumed. And their topic is about Mental Health.

Sadly, I was late because of the power interruption in our area. I only had the chance to listen when they were talking and sharing about their experiences. Since I was late I never had the chance to share this but I can share it here <3 I was diagnosed with depression in 2018 and I learned that Mental Health is important just as our Physical Health. Mental health might be a sensitive topic (I still got nervous and slightly uncomfortable talking and listening about it) but it is something that should be tackled. After that Ma’am Framelia also discussed about scientific knowledge and information. And I learned the importance of Science Communication and as a Communication student I should be responsible for taking that role.  ----- We were given a task to give an example in each type of Document that is listed down below: Bibliography-  Johnson, Mary Anne. Week 5: Journal

This day is for the remaining groups to report including our group. The remaining topics are:

HIV, Polio, Measles, Typhoon-related disease outbreaks, Mental Health, and Maternal Death.

Just like week 4, here are short preview of their topics.

HIV IN THE PHILIPPINES                                                           Group 4 (Espanto, Ferrer, Gaetos)

HIV doesn’t have cure. When people with HIV don’t get treatment, they typically progress through three stages. But HIV medicine can slow or prevent progression of the disease.

POLIO                                                                                                         Group 6 (Lagmay, Limos, Mangado)

Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. Just like the HIV, there is no cure for polio but it can prevented by immunization. 

and now it’s our group.

MEASLES                                                                                              Group 7  (Manlapaz, Medina, Medrano)

Measles is an infectious viral disease causing fever and a red rash on the skin, typically occurring in childhood. We also note that adults can have Measles, too. 

Our group also added why there is a suddenly increased of reported cases. It’s because of the dengvaxia. Parents are afraid to have their children get their immunization.

TYPHONE-RELATED DISEAS OUTBREAK                                    Group 8 (Menor, Organista, Patombon)

Typhoon and heavy rain creates flood. Floods are the main cause of a transmission of communicable disease. Example are: water-borne disease such as Leptospirosis and vector-borne diseases such as Malaria and Dengue.

MATERNAL DEATH                                                                         Group 10 (Rubang, Tabobo,  Torma, Yadao) 

Maternal Death is defined as the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy. What I love about their report is they added a quote that empowers women “Love them, take care of them and respect how diverse they are.” 

I was reminded that “BABAE ako. Hindi babae lang”. In my last blog, I mentioned that 6 groups are reporting this day but Group 9 has a technical problem and two of the members are not present. So our prof decided that Group 9 and their topic “Mental Health” will report next week. And that is what I learned in just two days.

Week 4: Journal

This day my classmates started to report their designated topic. Which is the Dengvaxia, Immunization, Teenage Pregnancy and Drug Addiction . I will give you a short preview of their topic.

DENGVAXIA                                                                                     Group 1 (Acosta, Aguilar, Andres & Bautista)

In 2016, Dengvaxia had a high profile launch in the Philippines and started the campaign. And does not contain preservative. By 2018 the government stopped the campaign due to controversy around how the vaccine affected people. 

IMMUNIZATION                                                                                      Group 2 (Bernal, Casabuena & Corales)

The fact or the process of being immune against diseases. There are six vaccines included: Tuberculosis, Poliomyelitis, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis and Measles. 

TEENAGE PREGNANCY                                                            Group 3 (Dayrit, Donato & Durat)

Is also known as adolescent pregnancy. Several studies have also pointed out the enormous risks which are associated with teenage pregnancies. Save the Children Philippines is a campaign and program that uses health communication to improve the understanding of people about teenage pregnancy.

DRUG ADDICTION                                                                              Group 5 (Galletes, Galvez, Garcia & Jocutan)

The drug problem in the Philippines has primarily been viewed as an issue of law enforcement and criminality, and the government has focused on implementing a policy of criminalization and punishment.

Before our classes ended one of my classmate told a trivia that coffee is considered as a drug. That is all for this week (Oct.17) since we ran out of time. So another 6 groups for Week 5.

Week 3: Journal

For week 3, we had our asynchronous class just like the other week (week 2) we are also grouped but this time we have 10 groups. My groupmates are Manlapaz and Medina, they are both my friends so they are easier to communicate with. Our topic that given to us is “Measles”.

According to Mayo Clinic, Measles is a highly contagious illness caused by a virus that replicates in the nose and throat of an infected child or adult.

Then we made a group chat for easier communication. We made a plan (picture above) and we talk about distributing our own parts. I got the number two as my part so I searched for the background of Measles. While searching I found out that Measles still exist until to this day. Luckily, I haven’t experience this yet because I completed my vaccine for immunization when I was a baby/child. After searching for articles and information, I gather and collected them all including my groupmates research. Because I volunteered to make our presentation. 

And that is my preparation for Week 4. In my next blog, I’ll be discussing what I learned about the reports of my classmates. Thank you <3

Week 2: Journal

(October 2) For our first E-Forum, our class were grouped into four. I belong to to the Group 3 with Corales, Galvez, Peralta, Andres, Limos, Tabobo and Espanto. Ma’am Anonas (our subject teacher) gave each group a question. And our question is:  What are the norms and values of science? Choose one norm or value to explain. Corales and I talked and agree about having a Facebook Group Chat so we can discussed our answers.  Having our official group chat we laid out the norms and values of science, these are: Universalism, Communalism, Disinterestedness, and Organized Skepticism. My fellow groupmates discussed what they know about the 4 norms and values while I am listening I also searched for other ideas and explanations. I chose Universalism to discussed in our E-Forum. Because I found Universalism interesting. This is my explanation:

“ Robert Merton is a sociologist, grounds his view of what scientist do in a set of social structures and a social system. One of the norm is called Universalism. 

According to Janet D. Stemwedel, Universalism is the idea that the important issue for scientists is the content of claims about the world (or about the phenomena being studied), not the particulars about the people making those claims.

Example: A person with a degree of Doctor of Science (ScD) that graduated in a small college school claims about Coronavirus Vaccine. In Unversalism, scientist would check and study those claims. They won't disregard that claims just because that person came from a small college school.

Since the shared goal is building a reliable body of knowledge about the world we share, all the scientists engaged in that project are to be treated as capable to contribute. Disregarding another scientist's report because of who he is, then, is a breach of the norm of universalism. Because that science should be open to talent, whatever the ethnic or status properties of the talented are. In this respect the values of science are similar to, and supported by, the values of democracy. “

This technology that I like very much is called, PAPERANG Printer. 

Paperang is a portable wireless printer that is easy and fun to use. It can be taken anywhere and prints from any devices such as laptop, tablet, smartphone, or devices that has bluetooth in it.

I love this invention because I love photography so much. I’ve been taking a lot of photos with my iPhone 5s before. I only post my photos in Instagram (cathyy.pusa) You can check out my Instagram to see them, if you want. I also love to travel and capture every memories and this is a great tool for mobile photography, it's very compact and easy to use. You can also print text that I can you can use for studies. I rather buy this one than the polaroid.

Paperang was created without ink so that people don't had to pay the expensive recharges like Polaroid, for this reason Paperang use the thermal printing.

Thermal Print is cheap because it does not use cartridges, the paper is improved to allow the ink to remain imprinted for a long time, it's portable and with a roll you make 100 prints at a price for really low roll. 

Paperang was invented by a company named  Xiamen Paperang Technology Co., Ltd. This company is a young, high innovative, and technology-based team, established in 2016 and located at a creative city —— Xiamen.

Week 1: Journal

Before online class started I was both nervous and excited at the same time.  I am excited to learn new things in my course even I have been expecting a lot of difficulties since this is new for me. Honestly, I thought I only had two major subjects this semester. I didn't know that Science and Communication can be connected or combine so I got curious about this subject.

(September 26, 2020) I finally got the chance to meet our instructor Ma'am Framelia Anonas in our subject "Science and Health Communication" . She was so kind, bubbly and pretty, too! In our first meet, it felt like the ambiance was soft and I did not felt any pressure so it felt like home. She read the course guide for us and she gave a little background and introduced our subject.

She asked us if we can still recall the lessons we had in our science subject before. I didn’t had the chance to speak. But I remember how my Grade 5 and Grade 10 Teacher discussed about Reproductive and Menstrual Cycle. I remember those things because I got interested how our body works. Especially that I’m a woman and had my periods.

Honestly speaking, one of my favorite subjects in High School is Science and to think that Science and Communication was combined that’s when I got interested in our subject. After our first meeting, I am looking forward in our next class!
