Dug out an old doc and uncovered notes for an AU from who knows how long ago where Carole is pregnant again when Goose dies...lots of Mav basically coparenting with her, holding onto his instructor position for as long as he can through sheer force of will for her sake...and Icemav, of course.
Do you think Rooster understands that his "no wife, no kids, no one to mourn you when you burn in" speech is the last thing Mav heard before finding out his wingman of almost forty years had passed away? No wonder Mav was so willing to go down after that

Writing for Top Gun and having Top Gun OCs is humbling in the sense that you do have to remember what the real-life US military is every now and then. I'll be six videos deep about the EA-18G and emerge briefly to recall The Atrocities before slinking back in.

Honestly while I'm on the topic of it, throwback to when some friends and I were deciding on what movies to watch for a movie night and I jokingly described Top Gun '86 as as a gay romcom (in my heart it is an Icemav movie and nothing bad happens ever). To which I was immediately shot down with the information that one of them won't watch anything with Tom Cruise in it. Good for you! Maybe be less of an asshole about it next time though?
Top Gun: Maverick AU where the rest of the Daggers see the Weird Energy™️that's going on between Maverick and Rooster and come to the conclusion that there's an abuse of power (sexual) going on rather than an abuse of power (familial, canonical).
Being into movies like Top Gun is the #1 most embarrassing experience when my friends want to watch things like Knives Out or Red, White & Royal Blue. Nothing wrong with those movies! I, however, simply enjoy Jet Go Fast, Unrealistic Military (Propaganda), and Those Two Motherfuckers who want to bite each other.

Comes as no surprise that academic burnout hitting me hard also tore me from Top Gun (the perils of enjoying yourself when stressed), but I do still plan on getting the Top Gun x Real Genius fic written......eventually. I have a fun title and everything!
One thing that I've found is supremely difficult in more 'grounded' settings (I come from a comic book and sci-fi fandom background) is that explaining time travel or reality travel is really hard, actually. I'm thiiiiis close to making up a Pacific Tech student to pin the blame on. If we can have space lasers we can poke holes in the multiverse.

This particular fic is Mav in Real Genius, but you do make a compelling argument to eventually write a reverse....the alternate timeline where the physics-hater has a vendetta specifically against Chris.... pawn him off on another universe for a few weeks so the rest of us can study
