Half the people who passed her didn't give her so much as a glance. Those that did either gave her a wide berth (black cat issues) or tried to pet her. The young man who glanced her way and carried on didn't make much of an impression... until he came back and set a bowl and some food down. A pleasant enough surprise, if it hadn't included another attempt at petting.

"Don't people usually ASK before touching a stranger?" she drawled, looking up at him. "Or, in the case of a cat, let it sniff your hand first?"

Seeing him recoil would have made her laugh if she hadn't already been a little miffed. And yet he wasn't sent running. Good for him.

"Yes, I just talked. I'd like to think I'm fairly good at it," she said, jumping up on a trash can and sitting with her tail curled neatly over her paws. "You've never met a talking cat before?"

Stevie had been stuck in that hole for a solid hour. It was just narrow enough that she couldn't turn human and just climb out that way. She was cold and covered in mud, and she knew she was lucky she hadn't broken anything in the fall. She'd been meowing periodically, in the hopes that someone might hear and decide to help...

And someone did.

The light at the entrance was blocked out, and she looked up to see a pair of eyes, followed by an arm reaching down. She rose up as tall as she could, and went perfectly still as the stranger's fingers carefully closed on her scruff. In another moment, she was lifted back into the sunlight and gently set down on her paws.

In another moment, she shifted, and instead of a cat, a woman was crouched in the leaves in front of Margaret. She shivered and slowly got to her feet.

"Thank you... thanks for that," she said. "It would've been pretty bad if it got dark and I was still down there..."

The black cat that was Stevie gave a muffled snarl as a hand closed on her scruff and hoisted her into the air. Her ears flattened, tail lashing as she was turned to face a grinning blue-eyed blonde.

Her form abruptly shifted, and instead of a ten-pound cat, he was left trying to hold on to a hundred and fifty pound panther that was lunging up to bat at his head with a massive paw--
