Hey there, welcome to my cave lion comic!

“Life—uh—finds a way”. It sure does.

The Cenozoic of a few thousand years ago is one of the most amazing things you’ll ever see, one of my favorite animals within it being the Cave Lion (specifically the American cave lion, Panthera Atrox) so here’s a loosely-ClanGen -based comic about a pride of cave lions!

Sunlit Steppe is inspired by @mammoth-clangen but independent from that amazing comic I’m definitely not recommending right now but go read it, it’s so good!

Sunlit Steppe updates every weekend. Biweekly, at the most. Pages posted as made on ComicFury, posted by the moon here on tumblr.

Waterbuck and Blackbuck = sisters?

Got a question on DA asking if Waterbuck and Blackbuck are related.

Sable and Waterbuck are definitely biologically related (Oryx is an adopted brother because they were all found by Blackbuck when she was on patrol) but as for Blackbuck being related to them…

It’ll have to be something explored later in the comic :)

Expressions within Sunlit Steppe

Since they’re cave lions, they have their own phrases/words for things, and I’m proud of them so here you are:

MEASUREMENTS

Winter - a year. The winter is a key point of time in cave lion beliefs, so it measures their years. A year revolves around one point in time, so after a winter is their new year, announcing the beginning/end of a year.

Season - around 4 months, respectively. If a lion were 2 seasons old, they’d be 8 moons.

Moon - equivalent of a month. The moon is also crucial to lions beliefs, so it’s fitting it is used in a time measurement.

First sunlight - dawn or sunrise.

Sun-sink - dusk or sunset.

ANIMALS

Broad-shoulders - bears, specifically Arctodus, the short-faced bear.

Chasers - the extinct American cheetah, miracinonyx, also called runners.

Rippers - dire wolves, also called Hound-teeth or Dog-teeth.

Bone-teeth - pachycrocuta, a prehistoric hyena-like carnivore, also called bone-crushers and cutters.

Little-teeth - little saber-teeth cattens, genuses like that of homotherin machairodontine.

SAYINGS

Bigclaw - a mentor to a cub older than five moons

“Glacier’s Breath!” - used in a sense of surprise or shock to convey the emotion; an equivalent to “holy cow”.

“Have you got icicles in your ears?” - “are you listening to me?” (Can also have the expression “you pompous idiot” added to it for more of an oomph)

What species are the cats?

American cave lions, Panthers atrox! I recommend looking into these beauties and panthera splaea if you have the time.

What is the comic rated?

PG-13. It’s not too heavy, nor is it intended to be as it is not a full project, but it has topics that may be sensitive to some individuals like abuse, grief, trauma, mental illness, violence, and blood.

When does the comic update?

I’m currently more focused on @kuweka-jua-comic and @sky-of-storms-wc, so it’s safe to expect an update once a month at least.

Where can I find the comic?

What time does the comic take place in?

It is set around the late Pleistocene, around 130,000 years ago, in modern day North America.

Can I have headcanons about the characters and/or have fan characters?

Yep, and I’d love to see them! They may even get put in if they’re that good.

What is a winter in measuring time?

A winter is basically a year. A main focus of Cave lion’s beliefs circle around the winter so they use it as a way of telling the time of year and the ages of things. Additionally, they hunt at night so the moon is another focus of belief, so moons keep track of months in a more short-term time measurement.

How many cave lions in a Pride?

Because it’s still debated on whether cave lions hunted in prides like modern ones do (I mean being almost completely dependent on one another, not just occasionally hunting like some scientist theorize Panthera atrox and Panthera splaea did), it’s pretty much up to whatever happens wherever. I’d say generally there’s as many as a modern lion pride, ranging from 6-20.

What are the structures of a Pride?

Wholly depends on the leader(s) and how many lions are in it. Generally, though, there is a main leader, a second-in-command, a herbalist, and denizens that function like lionesses of modern day prides, caring for young, hunting, serving the pride, etc., of some sort. It is most common for a leader to be female and mature males to be rogue, not affiliated with a single pride and instead roaming areas. There are also cave lions without prides that may join if they wish, but it isn’t forced.

Is this a ClanGen comic?

Not really. Still, I kind of brand it as one and was inspired by a comic based on ClanGen and inspired loosely by the game itself but not really, unless CG secretly stands for Cave lions are Gay.

Is this a realistic comic?

It’s about as realistic as you can make a heavily anthropomorphised comic about a time range relatively little is known about. What we know about the animals that existed back then, where, when, and how they lived influences how stuff works in the comic. In the sense of what is known about back then, sure, this could be interpreted as a semi-realistic comic, but a lot is made up to fill in gaps—I don’t think cave lions spoke English or knew what animals of modern day Africa were called—but it definitely isn’t made to be a wildlife documentary.
