Project 4
The subject matter for my final project was the relationship between physical and digital. I wanted to continue to explore the technical aspects of digital art this time focusing on 3D printing and how 3D scanning or digitization works. I constructed the idea of repeatedly printing and scanning a simple object to see how the relationship forms. Much of my research wasn't on the artistic side but more so on how certain technical aspects of 3D prints and digitization is accomplished.
I found something very interesting but not at all surprising. As the object I chose which was a 1x1inch cube, was scanned and printed it began to lose then drastically lose the sharp details of the cube. This is interesting because it can be interpreted in many ways, which is what i believe makes some art so good. The immediate interpretation comes from the technical side, which is at each iteration a loss of accuracy happens for a multitude of reason largely stemming from inconsistency in the surface of the 3d printed object and the quality of the digitizer. This is a very clinical interpretation as is expected from somebody with a very technical point of view.
The second and likely more common interpretation would be the ‘artsy’ way of saying the above. It would be that there is a loss of ‘something’ when translating media from digital to physical and back again. But this isn't even the most interesting part of the relationship, although the cube like structure is lost, a very abstract and much more interesting shape is born with only vague semblance to a cube or any structure with a flat face whatsoever.
Something that really inspired this piece was my growing fascination with the advancements in fabrication. If I had described this piece to somebody 10 years ago they would have said I was insane. But now we are pushing the boundaries of what can be done while creating things, personally believe digital media has laggy been a two demential medium, screens and prints. However I think in the near future we will see hybrid installations working with 3d printing and VR where an object could be 3d printer to obtain the form, then placed in augmented reality to provide surreal texture for said object. This advancement harkens back to the loss of the sharp initial physical object that was initially created and shows the process of it shifting and moving towards something more organic and interesting, purely through the process of digitization.
