JAMuary: The UK has been deliverng with awesome jams already and January was a fun one in London for Zee and I. We had a month full of dance, fun and good vibes.
It started with JAMuary in Londontown. Jamuary is all about the JAM. You know? where you go to just vibe, chill and if the music moves you, you share in a cypher and get busy with your peeps. You also got to talk to some girls, dance with some and have a drink as well. There were no competitions and no set up battles, no rules about cyphering and no underlying feeling that you had to go there and follow specific unspoken rules of throwing down more then anyone else. With the venue offering free coat check all the mess of bags and coats were taken care of. The floor was cool and the music was right. The venue had one room with varying music that included a shirt/ screen printing station and ofcourse- a bar. It was a blast overall, to just let loose and enjoy a night out doing what you love to do. At a reasonable price and plenty of perks Jamuary left us wanting more nights like this. You know the night when you get together with other people in the scene, you get to chill, drink, cypher and no pressure of a competition. Your also not sacrificing your taste in music to just get a night out. Its what the people wanted and it would be lovely in a warm setting. ;)
DJs in the main room were: ill boogz - funk and breaks (born2rock) Rich roast -funk and breaks (born2rock/unity) M-Cutz - hiphop Monster playground (92pts) - trip hop and beats Beetman - disco &boogie
And as if that wasnt fun enough a live band played some funkiness… Much love to Smith & the Honey Badgers, you brought the flava.
The smaller room was curated by south London vinyl night ‘crates’ with monster playground, Emily Evans, Ed word and x cutz providing the tunes all night. Live screen printing was by Joe Kelly and Chris Mackenzie from the Hoxton hall print studio.
Jamuary was held at the courtyard theatre, in awesome London, N1. It was organised by #unity and the LMNade associates and CRATES. Sponsored by mint vintage. Thanks goes out toeveryone who came to support it and were up for getting into the spirit of a real jam. There are also rumours now of organising JUNITY with an attached music project. Stay Tuned.

A woman's perspective....
A Woman's Perspective....
I recieved my first email question! Much love to the bgirls outt here showing support to eachother, there are countries where bgirls are even afraid to step in a cypher. Not because of shyness but men literally push them out, one time i experienced a bgirl crying because 1. In her country women arent allowed to dance or its frowned upon and 2. We were at the jam and everytime she even made an effort to cypher a dude would straight shove her out. She asked me what to do and i took her to a cypher and showed her either take ur moment or make your own. Anyway i love this question because shows that we all have individual struggles in the game….
Question:
"So I stopped practicing..for 4 years. After those 4 years I was blessed to meet bboys that were filling the same joy and dedication as me. So we’ve decided to start fresh. To make a very long story short(er).. in this few years, me and my crew have started teaching kids, doing workshops, events and started traveling around Europe (at some point we realized, it’s the most aficient way to learn and gather experience - battles, jams, worshops, just meeting alot of wonderfull people) . For now, there are 2 or 3 active b-girls in (anonymous county) (yes..that’s me and 1 or 2 others). I’m doing my best to encurage girls - I’ve even squated a place in an abandond factory in my town where girls can practice and develop their skills (not just dancng). I’m feeling all of this is making me stronger and a better dancer, like, I understand something I didn’t realize before and it is showing in my moves! I feel less lost and more confident as ever before. On the other hand.. Here is where I have a question for you..it’s something I’ve been wondering for a long time and more and more in the last few months..How is it like practicing with girls? Would it define me in a different (better) way? Because I do feel a great energy and a different vibe when I meet bgirls from different countrys or when I enter a bgirl battle or just cyphers at jams.. Sometimes I realy fell like I’ve been missing out on something..There are also some facts like: my style was never very feminine (and I am working on that..because it feels more natural :D), I’m good with all kinds of powermoves,…and this was inspired by bboys. I am greatful for where I am now and how I got here. But I want to push further.”
Answer:
Hi *******, first I want to thank you for writing again, I am glad you chose to reach out to me as this is a good question for a lot of bgirls to see and discuss. Unfortunately the situation you mentioned in (country anonymous) is one that is very common within the breakin scene. Its a blessing that hiphop has spread world wide but some places just dont have the resources other places do and end up with a lack of knowledge and a slower development but alas hiphop is all about making something out of nothing and you guys made it work with what you have available, as well as seeking out more knowledge outside of where you are.
Sometimes taking a break is what we need to really know what we want from this dance or if we even want to stick to it and starting fresh is a good way to revamp that hunger you felt at first as well as developing into a stronger bgirl. Repeating foundation and relearning can only make you better so this is definitely a positive, even if it may feel like your moving backwards. The beauty of bgirling is the journey is your own and theres no correct blue print to follow, the important thing s to keep learning and developing what you love to do. You and your crew are on a good path and giving back which is awesome.
Your question is “what is it like to practice with other girls? And does this it help define you in a different/better way?”
To this I would say it all depends on the individual, but I think sharing with different people wether its a bgirl or bboy will only help you. Different people bring out different traits in us and also have different stories, knowledge, methods to share. For women I do think its important to support other women and practicing together helps with the encouragement we sometimes needs from a male dominated scene. It might also help to train with others girls in the sense that some moves are better explained from another woman because our bodies are different and you run into similar struggles. Its also important to share with women as woman in this scene struggle and some places are very limited- some countries women arent even allowed to dance so sharing becomes a blessing for them and in the end helps them and yourself. In the end you define yourself but it is good to have training with other girls for the scene and for a different perspective. If you want to work on your style and be more feminine then this will definitely help you, but if you as a person arent very feminine, then dont force it. Again be you, celebrate you and if your growth as a person makes you feel more feminine feel free to reflect it in your dance. For example: i started with a very deep feeling of salsa in my toprock cause i grew up around it and dancing it, then i became self conscious at a certain point (age) and just did basic toprock for a bit (that was a phase) now as i am in tune with my womanhood and sexuality i see this reflected in how i Feel when i dance, how I respond to music and what i do . Follow your journey, express it inyour dance and tell us your story.
Hope this helped, Peace and love Candy
A Woman's Perspective....
Hello to the bgirl community! I wanted to call this blog "a bgirl's perspective" but chose to replace bgirl with the word woman because we are all women before we are anything else and because I dont want to limit the capacity of this blog to just the women who break but to every woman trying to thrive in the hiphop scene or any male dominated scene. I want to write this bi-weekly blog because I do believe women in the scene should have a voice and because as a bgirl I get questions or queries from others and a discussion helps the scene not just the individual.
I am not always right, and am constantly learning. I have been breaking since 2002 officially and with 12 years in the game, I still feel lost at times. Taking a step back on various occasions to evaluate what I wanted out of this dance and what I am meant to do for it. Many times I was told my voice should be heard by other women while others may have even shunned me for it. Yet I am still here, still dancing, still growing and still wanting to do more. anyway the point is what I say is not the be all end all, and anything expressed is my opinion. No one is forced to adhere to anything written here nor am I unwilling to take a new opinion on board.
Experience in life like in breaking is a beautiful thing.
I will leave you with this story.
In 2007 I was invited by Paulskee to battle at Mighty 4's invitational battle. This is when if you wanted to rep you flew yourself out and repped. So I packed my bags and with the support of my crew went out to SF and got ready to get down.
The bgirls in the line up were all sick! Julez, Genesis UK, Angel, Citrus etc. I was a nervous wreck (as usual) the calmest one of our bunch, was Jules. Jules ran through each battle with ease. I didnt get it then, she wasnt doing as many moves as everyone and at one point when confronted with munch mills and a variety of power and technicality Jules came back with BURNS, flow and her own flava (with ofcourse her own bit of technicality and power) but the point was Jules was at ease because she had the experience. She knew exactly what she had and brought to the table and knew when to bring it out. She danced confidently, listened to the music and exchanged stories with the other bgirls.... she even encouraged me during each and every battle.
She won that day.
I now realize that experience in this scene is just as valuable as all the moves and movements you learn (if not more). As is with life. We fight the everyday battles pulling out moves we always pull out instead of stepping back and calming down thinking "i went through this before, i was ok then and i am okay now... i got this". Therefore I may not be the best person at answering all the questions or my opinion may not be the best but I am not afraid to go beyond myself to learn more. Furthermore if any of you have questions, want a bgirl u admire to be interviewed or just want an opinion on ANYTHING- be it training, practice regime, health etc. send any and all of your questions to [email protected] or simply click on the ask button!
Til the next post!!
Love,
Candy Candela
