“I’m sorry but I don’t have time to talk right now”
A good friend had gotten in a bad way with alcohol and had become rude and abusive. He was such a comedian and a delight, but now he was sick. I worked with his girlfriend and he came in to see what she was doing because he was drunk and had become a little paranoid. He approached me and said hi, but I backed away and said “I’m sorry but I don’t have time to talk right now” as both a way to escape possible abuse and because it hurt too much to see him so destroyed. That, and I was genuinely busy…
When his girlfriend got home from work she found him hanging at the top of the stairs.
6 years later and I still torture myself over those stupid last words I said to him.
