The word “ayni” in the Levantine dialect of Arabic directly translates to “my eye,” and is commonly used as a term of endearment in the same way that one would use “my love” or “my darling.” Culturally, the eye—and by extension, the gift of seeing—is rated so highly that to refer to someone as such implies a deep sense of affection, enough so as to equate the beloved person with the value of one’s own sight.
