He’s beginning to spiral, that much is clear. Once Kai got into the thick of one of these moods it would take a lot to bring him back down to earth. The speculation around his mental stability and the ridiculous rules he wanted to implement to Brookfield Heights certainly weren’t unfounded. Kai doesn’t seem to hear Joey’s pleads to stop his increasing rage, not until he’s holding her tightly and seeing the tears slipping down her face up close. “ I’m tired of being treated like my campaign is a fucking joke Like I’m a fucking joke! “ The cult leader’s hands lessen their bruising grip on her shoulders and he forces himself to sit on the bed so he can take a deep breath. As much as he wanted to, and was perfectly capable of violently lashing out more, he didn’t want to waste his energy. Not yet. Joey could plead all he wanted, but if Kai decided to go after that reporter there was no one that would be able to stop him once he made that choice.
As much as Kai wished he could win over the public favor and avoid any conflict like this, he also knew that would go against everything he preached. This was about stirring up chaos, fear and rage to bring on a better world. If he catered to everyone who felt that his views were extreme or hateful than he’d just be like every other politician. “ I know I can rely on you, Joey…you’ll help me do the right thing. You know who I am. While others only look at me, you see me. “ His voice is quiet, eerily calm now compared to his previous outburst only moments ago.
“ You’re right, we can’t hurt him directly. It would trace back to us too easily now that I’m on the board…but his family…it would be a shame if his wife were to have a terrible accident. “ Kai murmurs coldly, the words almost could be mistaken to him talking to himself if it weren’t for his eyes being completely fixed on Joey’s gaze.
𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐮𝐧 & 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐞, but joey finds himself unable to move. there is a familiarity of the hostility that is as comforting as it is terrifying. the sickness they feel in their stomach is a mixture of fear & disgust. fear of what kai might do, & disgust for the fact that this kind of behaviour, might turn her on in a different circumstance. for someone so 𝚂𝙷𝙰𝙼𝙴𝙻𝙴𝚂𝚂, joey feels nothing but shame now.
❝ you’re not a joke. not to me. ❞ [ do you really believe that ? or are you just trying to appease him joey ? is kai anderson really a good person ? or does he just satisfy your sick fantasy ? ] she still can’t 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 at him, it hurts too much. its not until she feels the grip on her shoulder leave, that joey regains the use of his legs & sinks to the corner, still shaking.
the tears begin to subside, turning to sniffles at kais words. ❝ i do see you. i do. ❞ [ what do you really see tho ] joey uses his sleeve to wipe his eyes which were much more fogged than intended. & although kai’s after thought is 𝙼𝚄𝚁𝙼𝚄𝚁𝙴𝙳, joey still hears it. bloodshot eyes finally look up at him, pain reflecting inside her blue eyes. ❝ no. no. we don’t have to hurt anyone. they’re innocent. ❞
