I wish more people knew what changing places toilets are. I literally plan my life around them, but most people have never heard of them.
[ID: a photo of a changing places toilet with equipment including a ceiling hoist and changing table /end ID]
For those who don't know, a changing places toilet is designed for disabled people who can't use a standard accessible toilet. It's much bigger and has room to manoeuvre a large wheelchair. It also has extra equipment including a hoist, shower and adult size changing table. The toilet has room for a carer to stand on each side to assist the person using the toilet and there's usually also a privacy screen.
This means that people who need a hoist to transfer from their wheelchair can access the toilet, people who need incontinence products changing don't have to lie on a toilet floor or sit in a used pad until they get home, and people with intellectual disabilities who need support from one or two carers have enough room.
Although there's more and more becoming available, there aren't nearly enough of them around, which severely limits where disabled people like me can go, and some disabled people who don't live near one may find it very hard or impossible to leave their house at all.
In the UK it's also possible to hire portable changing places toilets for events like festivals or Pride. My cousins even hired one for their wedding! Many tourist attractions without their own changing places toilets will also hire them to improve access for a day or more. So if you are involved in organising events, or are able to give feedback to organisers - let them know!
These should be a standard! 💙🥄
Access in the UK in general is far worse than in the US but their disabled toilets in general are much better. Their Changing Places toilets are top tier. If you’re visiting the UK be aware that you need a special key called a RADAR key to get into disabled toilets in the UK so you’ll want to arrange in advance of your trip to get one of those sent to you.
