Writerblr Indroduction - Actual Writer Version

Hallo! I’ve actually been on here for a couple weeks now, but never did an actual introduction of myself. Because I’m terrified of acknowledgement of the self beyond my work? Probably.

I’m Cecil, I make nonsense, and I’m here to make terrible puns and worse metaphors.

they/them, gender is No

living in bc but very visably a german/english pale ass little shit whos still bitter they werent raised bilingual and with more traditions than just nikolaus and mahlzeit

ace as all hell, probably on the aro spectrum somewhere, still attempts to write romance subplots

i have two cats and that is VERY important information because my life revolves around them

their names are coco and pepita and they cause problems on purpose

My go to writing nonsense (aka the stuff I keep coming back to in every wip ever):

folklore babyyy! every single thing i write has SOMETHING folklore related/inspired, no matter the genre. mostly scottish, germanic, russian, and scandinavian as that’s what i had the most access to learning as a kiddo and find most personally interesting in the kind of stuff that shows up, but i dip into others sometimes!

love me some exploration of trauma. every single character of mine needs therapy and they are unaware they are mine

there are now multiple instances of tall nervous lad + short fighty lesbian duos across my stories so thats fun

apparently half my stories count as ‘urban fantasy’ but that just makes me think of uncomfortably hot werewolves, so a better description is ‘real world but with GHOSTS and CELTIC FOLKLORE and GAYS’. sometimes modern but i have a soft spot for the 1760’s ish uk for some reason

horror! but horror that will make you cry. my goal is to be the queer folklory mike flanagan

speaking of that, im the most character focused you can be. im the kind of person who cant watch most movies as they focus way too much on premise not character. unfortunately that means i can have trouble coming up with plots that work but ill get there

fav themes include: motherhood, grief, family, friendship, guilt, trauma, healing from said trauma

fav tropes and trope adjacent things: found family (duh), spooky towns with a Secret, magic but gone wrong, old journals, creeping horror

i dont stick to prose because im extra and pretentious. storytelling mediums i have attempted so far (with varying levels of success ) include: literal physical journal (every time ive used this its been for horror, no surprise there), webcomic/graphic novel, audio drama, item box ala mysterious package company, and yes, good old fashioned prose books

@teriwrites Beneath Alder Creek. Has that folklore fae element I love so much, as well as characters I would die for

@chayscribbles Andromeda Rogue. This cast owns my whole heart and Chay has done the impossible of making me genuinely invested in a scifi story which hasn’t happened since my middle school doctor who days so that’s a VERY good sign of how Top Quality this wip is

@ashen-crest’s The Stray Spirit. The whole concept of the story is just so fun and once again, the characters holy shit. Plus there’s LOTS of writing and art out for it so it’s super easy to get a handle on after a bit of blog lurking!

My part for the @originalfictionbigbang, for the wonderful story Forest Child by @corishadowfang! Highly recommend going to read the story, it’s a semi-quick read, but it’s very good, hits that perfect sweetspot of spook and emotions that I love so much.

I drew this all the way back in like...February, so it’s a tad behind my other art, but I’m not actually too bummed about how this aged! Naturally there are things I’ve improved since this that I’d do differently if drawn now, but I still don’t dislike it!

Boom! It now has a name, a WIP page with a master list, and a Wattpad, for easier navigation!

This WIP is a bit unique, and will be updated as a series of ficlets, rather than a full narrative. I’ll post all ficlets on both Tumblr and Wattpad, and will keep the intro page’s master list updated.

Okay so I know this is weird and probably kinda overdramatic, but I figured an Official Announcement(tm) would make me feel a bit better. So basically, as people who usually interact have probably noticed, I have not been very online here recently. My hyperfixation has shifted to something else, and honestly something that’s probably a lot healthier for me atm. Not to get into details no one asked for or anything, but tbobs was kind of a processing tool for me for Some Stuff, and while I still love it and will definitely continue to work on it in the future, stepping back for a bit will probably help me fully distance myself from the original roots, and when I come back to it I hope it’ll be solely for itself, without any of That attached to it.

So! With that, I think I’ll ‘officially’ say I’m on a break from writeblr for the next little while. I’m still gonna come on here to check up on people and their stuff because my adoration for the wips I follow on here have not wavered in the slightest, nor has my enjoyment of interacting with the friends I’ve made on here wow that line sounded cheesier than intended. But yeah! Just gonna pop off for a bit original content wise! Again, I’m pretty sure most people already noticed me doing that, but it just felt better to start an actual break, instead of feeling like I was procrastinating on something lol

Rival Potion Shops: Kiss

After keeping the boys from kissing in chapter 20, I…maybe wrote a quick scene of them kissing. So as not to cheat myself.

Ambrose wasn’t used to it. He wasn’t used to any of it.

There was a second chair in his kitchen now, and another armchair in the corner. There were cookies in the pantry, in case someone dropped by, and extra dishes, in case they stayed for dinner. Though the additions weren’t much, they filled the place more. Ambrose didn’t even realize how much the empty spaces had bothered him until they weren’t there anymore.

“Ames?” a voice called from the new armchair. “What’re you thinking about?”

“Hm?” Ambrose turned. There it was, the part of all this that he was least used to. Eli was draped over the chair, book dangling from his hand, looking at him with a gentle expression. 

“You’re staring at the kitchen chair again,” he said. “I thought you liked it?”

“Oh.” Ambrose blinked, then patted the chair. “I do like it. I just…”

Rival Potion Shops: The Supply Closet

For those of you who might be going, “ho ho HO, the supply closet, you say?”

No. This is not that.

This is just a part of chapter 14 that was very self-indulgent (once again, not in that way), and I thought I’d share, as I’m not sure it’ll make it beyond draft 0.

For context, the dinner Eli refers to below is mentioned in this camp nano snippet.

“Do you need any assistance finding-?”

Eli snorted. “Do I need any…come on, you’ve labeled literally everything in here. No, I don’t need any assistance.”

As he slotted the mint next to the marjoram, his ankle bumped up against a stack of crates, knocking them out of alignment.

“Oh, sorry…” He paused as he straightened the crates. “Hold on, why do you have a cot down here?”

“Hm?” Ambrose leaned to look. “Ah. Apologies, I never managed to get rid of that. I keep meaning to build another shelf there.”

“So what, you used to have guests sleep in here?” Eli raised his eyebrows.

“No, I used to sleep in here.”

Eli dropped his hand from the crates. “I’m sorry, what?”

Ambrose took a step back. “I…used to sleep here. When I was an apprentice.”

Eli shot another confused look at the cot. “But…only when you were little or something, right?”

“No.” Ambrose twisted his signet ring around his finger. “I slept here until I inherited the shop.”

“What?”

Ambrose took another step back. Surely he had said something wrong- Eli’s face was suddenly a harsh mix of confusion and anger. “Well,” he tried, “there’s only one room upstairs, you see-“

“So where did Dawn sleep?” Eli gestured towards the street. “When she was an apprentice?”

“At the boarding house, with the other apprentices.”

“And why weren’t you there?”

Ambrose got the distinct feeling Eli wasn’t going to like what he was about to say.

“Master Pearce said it was too expensive.”

Ambrose had been right. Eli closed his eyes, set one elbow on a shelf, and pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a single controlled exhale.

“I see what Grim meant now,” he muttered. “At the dinner. Shite at everything else…”

“Are you angry with me?” Ambrose felt an odd fear rise in his throat, and he shoved it down. “I’m not sure what I’ve done wrong-“

“No. No, I…” Eli dropped his arm and looked at him with such strong softness that Ambrose had to look away, hands at his elbows. “You haven’t done anything wrong, and I’m not angry with you. Hey.” 

Eli’s fingers lightly brushed Ambrose’s arm, forcing him to look up. 

“I’m not angry with you,” Eli repeated, his tone impossibly gentle. “I’m upset that you were treated like that. That’s all.”

Ambrose couldn’t stand in the supply closet one moment longer. His eyes, his voice, what he was saying- all of it was foreign to him.

“I survived, didn’t I?” he mumbled and walked out into the main room. “I have my potion ready, if you are.”

He thought he heard a sigh behind him.

“Yeah,” Eli said. “Yeah, show me what you got.”

“What is it?” he asked. Eli leaned against the front counter and held up a vial.

“Look,” he swished the vial in the light to emphasize the swirling strip of vine floating inside. “Got the Derrin vine to play nice with the crushed fool’s crystal this morning.”

“Oh.” Ambrose tried not to sound too impressed as he reached for the vial. “Yes, I see that. How long did it take?”

“Just a few hours,” Eli shrugged and pulled the bottle out of reach. “How’s the esther treating you?”

Ambrose stiffened. He had spent the past several days cursing at the dried flower petals, trying to wrestle them into the first stage of the potion. Like bog bones, dried esther was particularly sensitive to heat, light, humidity…he had even breathed on a petal the wrong way once, and it had crumbled to useless dust in his gloved hand.

“Fine. Easy, in fact.” Ambrose tried to mimic Eli’s shrug. “I should have it all sorted in a day or so.”
