Neteyam x fem!human reader
Tags/Warnings - MDNI: Passively suicidal, eventual smut (but you'll know when), angst, rejected feelings, reader does have some physical description, aged up! Neteyam, fluff, found family, plot heavy but not really iykyk, mates, scent, mentions of death, reader does have some ptsd due to experiments, borderline slowburn -- lmk if any more
--These are just overall tags for the bigger story--
This is written in a third-person view, so there is a lot of she/her -- borderline oc
~W.C: 5.3k+
~Note: I'm on the fence about changing perspectives, because I've always treated y/n as it's own entity that anything related to however they are described as a suggestion -- it's easier to write from. Hmm, really thinking maybe just changing a 'her' into a 'you', idk lol, whichever ppl like more

Summary: Y/n was a girl that Jake knew before going to Pandora, she admired him but when he left, her whole life went down hill. She lost people, then taken from her home, experimented on like a rat. Now she's in Pandora breathing their air, living amongst them and yet she wants nothing to do with the life she has. She's tired, but maybe the Sully Family can help her stay awake a bit longer.
||
A life on earth wasn’t a life at all, not anymore. Y/n couldn’t even understand why she was on Pandora, but she knew this star — god did she know this star. As if those crooked scientists with dark fantasies hadn’t drilled life of Pandora in her head with every second she breathed. It was like any higher power was playing a twisted game of fate with her. She didn’t belong here, nor did she want to try.
Unfortunately for her, she was stuck here.
But the injecting, injecting, and more injecting. It filled her head. It’s all she could remember. All that just to breathe in Pandora’s wretched air that left a bad taste in her mouth.
Her face peaked out, just out of reach from the entrance of the tree. Her face highlighted by the torches surrounding the scene, she was indeed a human girl, but she had a defensive stance that was known to their people. Body close to the ground with feet planted solidly into the mixture of sand and soil, a tactic used if one were to pounce forward. Y/n held that knife — Neteyam’s knife, with such a grip that made her knuckles white.
“Specs, it’s me. Jake.” Jake’s chest heaving in a quick manner as he tried to control the situation, as he tried to control her. Leaning in a bit further, almost dangerously close, he lowered his hands. “My body.. my avatar, I chose-“
But his words fell onto deaf ears, she didn’t care to hear the finished sentence. With quick work, that same blade she held onto so dearly came flying out. The carved bone tracing a long swipe across Jake’s forearm, slicing through his skin. Jake groaned in pain, falling heavily on his ass as his family and the clan hissed loudly. Following suit with the same defensive positions towards her.
“No- No! I’m fine, just-“ Jake tried to reason, before turning back to y/n whose face was devoid of any emotion other than rage. His pointed ears laid flat against his head, pity in his eyes that further fuelled her anger.
Huffing loudly, y/n spoke in perfect Na’vi with nothing but venom seeping through her teeth. “As far as I’m concerned, that man was dead to me a long time ago.”
Jake had lowered his guard too low, and now he was the one injured because she saw an opportunity. Not to protect herself — but to hurt him. She took advantage of the chance she had. However, so did Neteyam.
Y/n was too focused on Jake, she had forgotten to account for the other blue creature beside her. She stuck out too much, she reached too far outside. Now half her body was exposed — she had left an opening.
Bow in hand, Neteyam pounced. Anchoring his body on top of her to create a balance shift that spun them away and out of the tree. Their bodies now entangled with one another as they fought with great strength from both sides. Neteyam found this type of strength odd for a human her size, although he didn’t maul over it.
The sand made it hard to grasp friction to try and move, but their arms were free. She didn’t hesitate. With her back to the ground, the carved knife broke through the air pressing against Neteyam’s throat. He had his head back with a growl that rumbled in his chest as his own bow countered it pushing against the base of her neck. His arms were much longer, but he wasn’t going to push his luck with this human girl who longed for the blade to break skin and pierce a vein. He could almost feel his own pulse pump heavily against it like it was edging itself with life or death.
Tensions were high, the clan was starting to become restless with no action and now a mother, a mother was going to protect her son. Neytiri, making no mistake to pull her well crafted bow in the air with an arrow that held a sharpened rock at the end. A shriek of fear from her lips had her system running on adrenaline as she aimed the arrow directly for the skull of the sky demon.
“Neytiri! Put it down!” Jake ordered but none of these women were hearing any of it. Y/n’s gaze was locked onto Neteyam’s, eyes blown out with a flush of red rising in her cheeks as air was becoming scarce. Both their arms stretched thinned as they tried moving further to reach and pin their opponent, a blunt bow to the throat and a sharp blade to the other. While she was beautiful yes, she was a threat that Neteyam worried she would be.
With a hiss, Neteyam’s hand tried pushing forward, but with each micro movement closer to her, the knife got closer to his throat. It was like she was waiting for him to inch just a bit more closer, that’s all she needed to end his life. He had no doubt that she would do that too.
“I’ll kill you, pink skin.” Neytiri snarled, bow and arrow straining against itself from the strength it was enduring.
Unexpectedly, almost chilling, Y/n’s gaze had flicked to Neytiri’s with a half-baked smirk playing at her lips — she was egging the dear old queen on. It was a type of disrespect Neytiri of all people could not tolerate.
Suddenly, it was like time had stilled when the quick tense of y/n’s bicep had shown her next intentions, she had originally planned to slice this boy’s neck open and she would’ve relished in whatever consequence it came with.
But Neteyam, a warrior at heart, saw it first. His eyes blown out, widening as he glanced at his mother who undoubtedly in an unsaid promise to herself had let her hand free. The bow went flying, silently piercing through the wind. Neteyam released his own strength, almost leaning into the direction of the blade to pull Y/n up by the shirt, balling his fist into the fabric to pull her close.
The arrow Neytiri released cemented itself into the sand, replacing the spot that Y/n’s head was in. This was a directed kill shot, she had no other motives but to kill this human girl. Stepping forward, Neytiri pulled back another arrow before Jake snatched her arm pulling her back. Everyone, the clan, Jake, his family were in shambles. Jake trying to do damage control but failing, now Neteyam was tussling with an oddly strong human. She tried running, he held her, her arms tried pushing him away but he gripped them.
Too close, too close, too close. She chanted in her head like a constant prayer. She almost felt empty without the foreign object forcing itself through her skull but she would’ve rather that than this big cloud that she no longer recognised as a body. It was suffocating and the hairs on her body stung straight up with waves of crashing anxiety coursing through her veins.
Chest to chest with this blue alien, this creature, this man — was it the pumping of extra blood in her head or was it lack of breath that made her sight bubble with black.
Neteyam grunted with each thrust of power she tried to exert but soon realised her stuttering breaths. He could feel her heart almost jump out of her chest, heat radiating off her skin like it was burning.
“Stop.” She choked, her breaths short and shaky as her body twitched irregularly — she was hyperventilating. Although Neteyam didn’t know what that was. “Get off! Get off of me!”
His eyebrows drew together, not knowing why she was acting like this. Surely fear was a factor but this was too much. What was short silent breaths, were now quickly paced with a loud rasp at the end that started turning into shrieking wheezes like a banshee fighting off a na’vi.
Tilting his head in frustration, he almost felt desperate to know the reason why she was seizing. Neteyam thought maybe she wasn’t immune to Pandora’s air after all? A mask. He needed a mask.
“Spider, get a mask!” Neteyam shouted across the sand oblivious that he had started to gently rock himself with her in his arms.
Her grip on the blade didn’t let up though and she held it close to her chest with a death grip. It was almost comical how big it was compared to her, just about the size of her torso.
Tears pricked at the edge of her eyes while Neteyam’s long arms snaked around her back holding her close. He gazed at her, face drained of the colour that was there seconds ago, eyes that darted left to right like it rolled in their sockets. He could hear quick feet shifting in the sand as Lo’ak and Spider dropped to their knees holding up spare masks that Spider had no use of anymore.
Neteyam swiftly lifted one and latched it over y/n’s face letting the oxygen replace the air. “Breathe, tawtute. Breathe, that’s it.”
Deep breathes in, then deep breathes out. Simple concept. But with a heart that didn’t want to calm down, a head that was feeling light, it was a tough lesson to catch — like her breath. But Neteyam mirrored her, also loss of his own breath and started to guide her with him. Chest rising and falling in a pattern that was slowly paced.
“That’s it, just breathe with me.” He murmured, noticing that her eyes flickered to his.
What a gaze, he thought. Sharp eyes were now round and soft. But with that, much to her dismay, her eyes were faltering and it was becoming a struggle to hold them open. His face was the only thing she could see becoming blurry, resembling ocean ripples as his figure distorted.
But she wasn’t fighting for it, she had convinced herself that the painful throb in her head was her suffocating to death — so why keep her eyes open. She closed them hoping it would urge her body to hurry up and just die, go limp in his arms, and that’s exactly what it did.
It was morning, the whole village that struggled to sleep were still on high alert and kept their eye on the marui that held the yet again unconscious human.
Neteyam, down on one of the sleeping mats tucked in the corner sat with his head tilted against the woven walls. He hadn’t had much sleep, opting to watch over the girl once again while his father did damage control. Unsuccessfully trying to convince the clan that this was just a minor mishap, that this girl was of no danger but just lost.
His ear twitched at the sudden change in pace of y/n’s breathing. He watched her body carefully, he took note that she still held his hunting knife — his tstal, close to her. It was one he crafted himself when he became of age, it had great meaning and yet he wasn’t too fussed that the little human had taken a liking to it for her protection.
Just then, Jake with heavy steps came into the canopy. Sighing deeply as he shook his head in defeat, an action he had not yet come accustomed to but did it a lot in the span of two days.
“No, Sir. Nothing.” Neteyam answered, standing on his feet as they both watched over the girl. “What did the Olo’eyktan say?”
Jake exhaled through his nose, eyebrows tensing at the question. “That can’t happen again, that’s all I can say.”
Neteyam noticed Jake’s forearm, wrapped neatly in leaves and herbs that undoubtedly been done by the tsahik to help clear his wound. “She really got you.”
Jake huffed out a dry laugh, nodding his head. “Yeah, she’s always been dangerous with a blade.”
Neteyam blinked, thinking deeply before he chose his next words. “With all due respect sir, you didn’t seem like the person she wanted to see.”
Jake stilled, blinking in silence as if what his eldest son said wasn’t an invasive comment. But he wasn’t going to hide anything to his people’s future leader, especially one he had unconsciously left the protection of this girl to.
“I’ve said this before, but earth is no longer what it use to be. The gap between poor and rich just got bigger with every second.” Gesturing to y/n with a weak head tilt. “She was the poor. Her mother hadn’t done her family justice with whatever compensation given from the government for our service.”
Neteyam nodded, not fully understanding some words as they were foreign concepts on Pandora but didn’t question further.
“Wait,” Jake whispered to himself, swiping his mouth with his hand as he came into a realisation. “Siblings… Yeah she had-“
A loud groan erupted out of the chest of the not so sleeping girl, gasping as she opened her eyes to be met with two towering figures of blue over her. Pushing back she made no mistake to hold the tstal up high, ignoring the burn of her muscles that weakened over time.
“Woah hey, hey. Specs.” Jake started, holding his hands up. “We aren’t here to hurt you. We just want to talk.”
“Talk?” She heaved, the idea made her heart pound and her face twitched as her thoughts fought with each other. “What’s more to talk about? All I remember is being put to damn sleep by those fuckers, and now suddenly I’m standing in front of a blue avatar.”
Jake’s eyebrows were drawn together as he lowered his arms. “We won’t harm you, I promise.”
“Aren’t you one for promises,” She snapped back and Jake flinched.
“Just hear us out, okay?” Jake said softly, eyes pleading. Y/n stared, blinking away the stinging sensation at the waterline of her eyes. The salt was very prominent in the air, and the sounds of water was clearly heard all around her rather than just coming from the singular direction.
Neteyam tilted his head, looking with remote interest. His breath hitched when she connected their gaze. He held his hands up softly in a surrender and he took notice of how she eyed him up and down.
“Then, stay near the entrance.” She demanded. That’s all they needed to hear.
Tense and yet awkward at first, slowly y/n opened her mouth to speak. “There were dozens of us. I can’t remember most of them because most never made it past the first stage of testing.”
Tears pricked her eyes, threatening to fall out but she tried gathering herself by sinking her teeth into the inside of her cheek. She had long taken off the mask and had no problems breathing. She now stood at the entrance of the clan’s Olo’eyktan and his mate’s marui, she couldn’t enter the enclosing space. It was too much to push herself in without feeling trapped so she opted to stand just outside.
Jake and Neteyam had taken her there, careful to watch over their shoulders as she refused to walk beside them. Jake never pushed her family matter, it was a sensitive topic back then and he could imagine it was worse now. Y/n though, had refused to let go of the knife, which earned her a hiss from the tsahik that was dismissed by her husband — not the best first impression.
The clan leader’s ears flicked at the sight of her, watching her with a steady gaze with his chin held high in authority. Tonowari was definitely a leader in his own right, chest puffed and a calm demeanour. Although his wife, she held the skeptical look in her eyes the entire time.
“You have caused us many problems, tawtute.” Tonowari said firmly, not flinching an inch as Y/n eyed him just the same as he eyed her. “But Jake Sully here has vouched for you. Says you were a warrior of some sort back on earth.”
Y/n’s eyes lazily flickered to Jake who seemingly had an eye issue as he avoided her gaze. “Not the word I would’ve used. But.. I did fight for a living.”
“Like an animal…” Ronal muttered to which Y/n scowled in return. Ronal’s ears laid flat against her head as she hissed. Tonowari let out a frustrated sigh glancing at his wife.
“So you know human techniques?” Tonowari furthered inquired.
“More or less.” Y/n replied.
Tonowari nodded, thinking deeply. Taking a quick glance at Jake who had gave an approving nod hoping to appeal to the clan’s leader. “Then you shall be of some use to us, unless you have some… lingering attachments to your kind?”
“Not in a million years.” Y/n answered instantly.
“Then it is settled,” Tonowari confirmed.
Y/n then continued to spend the rest of her weeks settling in the reef, uncomfortable but well enough to not flinch at the sight of a 10ft na’vi man. Since she was tasked with teaching young warriors of fighting techniques that combatted that of humans, she couldn’t afford to be startled by them.
Although, she hadn’t gotten use to the ocean yet, she admitted that her human limbs couldn’t move as good in the water like the locals. Furthermore, she wasn’t so sure about being hugged by the water like that, not yet at least.
She especially found small joy in the na’vi children who lingered not too far from the training grounds, finding it amusing that even though they didn’t approach her directly, they learnt from a far.
“Y/n, catch.” Lo’ak announced himself as he tossed a yovo fruit. “Thought you’d be hungry.”
“I’m not, but I’ll take it I guess,” Y/n sighed. She hadn’t sought out Jake’s children often, finding it somewhat draining at the constant chatter but felt more comfortable with them than other na’vi. Especially Neteyam. He made her uneasy, the way he gazed at her, the way his first instinct is to always reach out to help even though each time she rejects it. Even the thought of standing side by side made her uncomfortable.
He looked too na’vi. Na’vi hands, a brow less na’vi face, and a remote sense of pride in his step as he walked like he was already Olo’eyktan of a forest that they hadn’t returned to yet. It made her unsettled because every time she looked at him, all she could see is flashbacks of constant pictures of forest na’vi — the Omatikaya people, on constant show in that damn lab. It was like the only source of colour they were allowed to see, a deep dark blue, which was much different from the Metkayina clan that had a turquoise colour palette and patterns that resembled the water reflection. To her, they were softer to look at than him. His siblings, were easier to be around because at least they had features she recognised.
Yeah, she didn’t enjoy being in his presence at all. So she made it her mission to make it seem that his life would be nothing but hell when they were near each other. If he had a lesson to do, she invaded it, if he had duties to attend to, she’d sabotage them. Wasn’t like she did all of them by herself — Lo’ak and Spider were willing accomplices too.
Although Spider also was a person she didn’t really try to hang around — While Neteyam was too na’vi, Spider was too human, made her compare him to those ugly men in white coats back on earth.
“Well, it’s not like you stay at dinner long.” Spider added, he was trailing behind Kiri who had followed Lo’ak to the cliff that Y/n had chosen as her home. Living not too far from the village but far enough where she was in open space, with a make shift home of a nearby cave.
“You should eat with us longer,” Kiri agreed. Smiling as she saw Y/n’s outfit, although y/n wasn’t ready to let go of the top nor shorts yet because she felt way too exposed she did allow Kiri to decorate them with woven jewellery. Further using long dried kelp vines to wrap over her top tightly because y/n had a hard time feeling her heart beat in her chest — it ached for emotional reasons y/n didn’t want to share. “If anything, Neteyam gets very agitated when you’re not there on time.”
Y/n flinched, her eyes drifting away. Then suddenly, like it was spoken into existence that said man started making his way over. “Speak of the damn devil.”
“The fire is already started. Dad has been looking for all of you. Hurry up and start heading over,” Neteyam said, pointing behind him before setting his eyes on y/n. “That also includes you, Tanhì”
She almost audibly groaned, that darn nickname he had gotten accustomed to saying. Truth be told, despite being frustrated with her antics to sabotage him and it working, his interest never left. He just saw it as a fun challenge to break her in, a stubborn human that just needed to see someone equal to her to let her walls down — was he that? Maybe but that could’ve just been his ego telling him that.
The Sully kids had listened to their brother, turning to head towards the village. Neteyam however hung back, waiting for y/n to start making ground.
“I’ll catch up with you guys, just.. need to take care of a few things,” Y/n said with a tense smile that hadn’t even reached her cheeks.
“Nope, not today tawtute. You must-“ Neteyam reached his hand out before he was cut off.
“I don’t need to do anything, Neteyam.” Y/n deadpanned, pulling away from him as if his skin was like fire. “I said I’ll catch up, isn’t that enough?”
Neteyam shook his head, exhaling a sharp breath through his nose. He waved off his siblings and turned to her again. “Must you always be so difficult? You have to eat.”
“Who said I haven’t. Look, I have a fruit.” Y/n pointed to the purple fruit that was handed to her just minutes ago, as if it was something obvious. Neteyam huffed, rolling his eyes as his jaw clenched.
“Refusing this, refusing that. You are one of us now — you must join us.” Neteyam said sharply. Y/n frowned, her own fists balling at her sides as she eyed up the Na’vi man.
“Why do you always need to be so pushy? Not everyone likes their eyes on them like you — Mr Toruk Makto’s son,” Y/n taunted, gesturing to the whole of Neteyam’s body. That line, Toruk Makto’s son had him in a frenzy, had his jaw twitching as he made his steps heavy towards y/n and unconsciously towering over her in some type of intimidation tactic. It made y/n angry, scoffing out a dry laugh.
“Careful tawtute, you almost had me fooled that were a sky demon.” He seethed.
“Yeah? You tell your siblings that when they piss you off?” Y/n smirked wickedly. Neteyam flinched, ears going flat. That made silence between them tense, a knife could cut through it. It stung, and the thought crossed y/n’s mind that maybe she had went too far but she wasn’t about to take it back.
As Neteyam responded with probably as much venom in his words, y/n wasn’t paying attention as she could see in the corner of her eye two na’vi boys playing near the cliff’s edge. Her fingers twitched as she did a quick glance, she hadn’t even taken notice that Neteyam pointed his finger into her shoulder as a rude gesture to shove her.
As she continued to watch, she started to take notice of the cracking of a dirt patch and it started to lift. She gasped, pushing past Neteyam and darted towards the young boy. That small patch cracked bigger, sliding itself off the cliff taking the child with it. As she ran his body was sinking past her line of vision, screams echoing in her ears as she soon followed. Although, she didn’t just catch his arm, she completely dived.
A cry choked out her throat feeling one arm catching the kid’s hand while her other had completely tangled itself into roots that poked out the bedrock.
“Y/n!” Neteyam shouted, sliding on the dirt and looked over the edge. Heart in his throat and wide eyes, he tried reaching for her hand but she had dragged down too low for him to touch. “Hang on! Just hang on!”
Her hand shook violently from being strangled by the vines, feeling blood flow becoming scarce in her limb. But she didn’t have the time to care for that, she tried using all her strength to hold up the young boy who was the same size as her.
“It’s okay, we’re fine.” Y/n said stuttered, trying to calm the kid down but it was to no avail. The kid cried loudly, trying to claw at Y/n’s hand to try and balance himself from swinging not realising that it was putting them both further in danger. Villagers started gathering quickly on the cliff, gasps and voices could be heard from up top as they made quick work to sort out solutions.
Y/n closed her eyes, heaving as she felt the strain of her body and the stretch of her arms that felt like they were tearing a part. She could not afford for this boy to die, not like this, to just be impaled or broken from the arched rocks below and then be taken hostage by the unmerciful waves. That wasn’t a death worthy of a kid, not by a long shot.
“Tanhì!” A familiar voice called, turning she saw Neteyam on his ikran. Flying towards them and relief washed over her chest.
“Him first!” She called back, nodding towards the dangling boy. Neteyam needed no more instruction, his ikran swiped by snatching the boy and y/n let out a sigh easing herself that the boy was going to be okay.
Now it was her turn, there was no way Neteyam could get her without ripping her entire arm off while it’s being strangled by these vines. A groan caught in her throat as she planted both feet against the bedrock wall, tugging her arm to attempt to break free. Wasn’t budging, so she opted to just pull on the whole vine together, pull it out of it’s root. She didn’t know where Neteyam was, nor did she particularly care since her main objective was the boy first and she wasn’t going to think about the consequence of pulling her arm free when Neteyam was not there.
With each tug, stone and dirt grain alike were making way. Lips curled back in pain as she choked on her own breath, throwing her head back aggressively to force this vine loose. One more tug was all it took for the root to break free from its safety and no longer opposing her.
A breath she had long forgotten about was let go. The edge of the cliff getting further and further with each passing second. All she could hear though, was silence, just her and the air — it was almost comforting.
Until it wasn’t. With her back hitting something hard, spine arching in an unnatural way, noise started to fill her ears again. Whipping her head, she realised she was on an ikran that bopped its head as it flew, turning the other direction she flinched back as she stared into Neteyam’s eyes that burned with fury. “What the hell is wrong with you?!”
Reaching the beach shortly after, y/n swiftly jumped off the ikran trying to rush off before she was pulled back. Hands tight on her upper arms, she was shoved back against the ikran with a loud thud that took the wind out her body. Neteyam’s big hands holding her in place, pinning her as he tried to catch her gaze scowling at her.
“What is wrong with you? Why would you do that?” He questioned furiously, he himself was out of breath. Y/n was getting uncomfortable, trying to shrug off his hands. “No! You’re not going anywhere. Do you realise you could’ve died?”
“Yes!” Y/n screamed in retaliation, head hung low as she once again tried shoving off his hands to which he let go. The silent confession lingering in his mind. “Move, I was fine.”
“No, you weren’t fine, who breaks free the very thing that’s holding them up?” Neteyam’s voice was raised. At this rate the whole village was getting caught up to the beach to help what they considered now one of their own.
Jake came rushing to the scene, distraught in his own right as he tried reaching for y/n. “Babygirl-“
“Save that for your own daughter Jake!” Y/n snapped. Making quick steps back, eyes lowered to the sand and trying to comfort herself with her singular arm that seemed to be working. She gave a dismissive head shake before whispering, “I was fine. It’s no big deal.”
Neteyam blinked, clicking his tongue as he finally took notice of y/n holding just above her left forearm. Seeing it shake after being under intense pressure. Covered in a snake like pattern that wrapped around her skin, showing where the root vines had decided to dig in.
“Let’s get you to the healer.” Neteyam said gently, lowering his voice as he went to reach for her again and she bucked away. “Tanhì.”
She flickered her eyes to his, his eyebrows raising slightly as he now just gestured her towards the healing tents. She followed suit, taking long strides towards the tent in silence.
Ronal had just left before Neteyam walked in, Y/n sighed shaking her head feeling already drained with the conversation that hadn’t even taken place yet.
“I’m not here to nag,” He dragged, holding his hands up before sitting down on the mat opposite her. The silence wasn’t awkward per se but it definitely had Y/n chewing her lip anxiously. They sat there for a while before Neteyam spoke flatly. “There were other ways to go about that, you know.”
There it was. Y/n shook her head with eyes squinted in irritation as she decided that the woven wall was a better feature to look at than Neteyam.
“I’m serious, there was no need to jump off. Those kids know survival, they would’ve been fine.” Neteyam tried explaining gently, but his lecture was going in one ear and out the other. His jaw twitch from the lack of response and his tail tapped against the ground irritated. “Even more so there was no need to try and break free from the root -- I would’ve cut you free. Overall, you could’ve died, Tanhì”
“Why do you always call me that. I hate it.” Y/n murmured, eyebrows furrowing as she spoke. Neteyam didn’t know how to answer and he can’t really remember when the nickname settled on his tongue.
“Well, you came from a star. So I find it fitting,” He answered.
“A star,” Y/n said drying in english, exhaling out a poor laugh. Saying it in her own native tongue had almost cemented its meaning for her. “And you’re a skxawng.”
Neteyam chuckle breathlessly, finding it weird to hear an english sentence with him more or less just understanding the insult.
“Next time, don’t do that.” He said finally, his voice low. Like a vibration in the middle of his chest. “Next time you wait for me. Don’t do it yourself, I’ll do it for you.”
“Ah yes, the mighty warrior to save the day,” Y/n said sarcastically, finally meeting his gaze. It was steady, it was calm and he held eye contact with her despite at her attempt of deflecting emotion.
“Just wait for me, okay?” Neteyam said softly, the air turning into something that made Y/n’s jaw clench. Her words got caught in her throat as she broke eye contact.
She didn’t answer his question, and she wasn’t going to. Not tonight.
